Subject: Don't You Want Me...

SOOO depressing and maybe even a tad embarassing IMO to see ole Ben Franklin dancin' and singin' Human Leagues "Don't You Want Me" in a Suntrust Bank commercial.  Also is another sign of old age kinda' -- right up there with hearing some of your fave songs from the teenage years on the 'Musack' (or however that is spelled) at your local Walmart, or even worse, in an elevator.

My parents used to listen to a "musak" station. The thing was, I knew a lot of those songs but they didn't. There is nothing like hearing a Beatles' tune or Simon and Garfunkle tune done is "musak." It almost made me sick!

Hehe. I cant say I feel old, but I recognized Talk Talk - Talk Talk (#12, 1982: Album: Partys Over) in a recent Singular Wireless comercial. It was really cheesy (in a funny way), with its mesage "Do you Like to Talk Talk?"

Hehehe.
The 80s are still here, we just wont admit it.
There are a few other commercials out there--I'll think of a few and post them. I remember one of them had Duran Duran. I think it was something cheesy like make up or something.

Ack, was watching tv just now, and heard "Melt With You" on a JCPenney commercial... :o

I have noticed that they have been using a lot of 80s songs in commericals these days. I guess those artists are being bought out.  :-/

I have too. Noticed a lot of 80s songs in commercials. I wasn't alive for many of these songs, but they kick butt, and it takes the edge off of them to see them in cheesy commercials. I'll die when they put 90's songs in commercials, but I guess it's inevitable that it will happen.

I heard Gary Numan's "Cars" the other day in a car commercial or something. Un-believable.  ::)

Although....

As much of a desecration to an awesome 80's tune as it is to use it for commercials of today's stupid kind, it does expose the newer generations to the better music of back then, so it's not all bad.  ;)   :)  8)

That is very true. I also heard "Cars" and can't help but sing along.  ;)

I finally saw the 'Melt With You' JCPenney commecial, and for some reason the song being played in a JCPenney commercial didn't piss me off as much as I thought it would. The 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' CruiseLine Commercial is really tacky though. You don't put Cyndi Lauper songs in a cruiseline ad. She's too awesome for that.

Years ago, they used her "True Colors" song for a Kodak comerical.

Yea, they did it up Vienna Boys' Choir style!  :o You really had to hold your ears whenever that one came on.

I've seen this silly commercial, too!  ::) They have SunTrust Banks here in Charleston, and I have to roll my eyes whenever the commercial comes on...

Personally, I would rather hear good music in bad commercials than bad music in (what could be) a good commercial.  It, at least, makes them watchable and memorable :)

Alphavilles "Forever Young" was in a car commercial. Good tune, bad commercial. ;D

I saw a few more during the past week:

Pure & Simple by the Lightning Seeds in an Aqua Fina water commercial

I saw a Milky Way commercial the other night...it had an 80's song in it, but now I can't remember which one.  Anyone else see this one?

And whatever that stupid video game is that has I Ran by Flock of Seagulls in all the commercials...I can't count how many times I ran from another room of the house, hoping for the video, only to see this commercial!!

A remake of Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" is in a car commercial too, although I can't remember the company. The song was really badly done, but it still almost makes me want to get the car just for the fact that they used a DM song in their commercial. (I felt the same way when Nissan used The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" in one of their commercials a few years ago.) :)

Absolutely Vile

Apparently the reason they are using 80's songs so much is because all us 80's children have now 'come of age' and are at a point in our lives where we are buying cars etc etc so they try to appeal to our rosetinted weren't the 80's the best time ever sides. This is the reason for so many 80's compilations and 'Best of' albums.

A local sandwich/deli place here is using "Keep Feeling (Fascination)" as their jingle. I've learned to love that commercial 8)
