Not necessarily the make up.  I mean...Brett Michaels looked much better without it.  Most of the guys in the glam bands did.  Maybe it is just because I love the tight pants..yummm

I think Brett was a pretty good looking woman. I was a fan of the music, but to this day I can't figure out why some of these bands tried so hard to look like women. And even more confusing was why women found it so attractive. You'll never find me looking like that, I feel uncomfortable just putting on chap stick.

David Bowie seems like the one who brought it into the limelight. I don't know who came with the idea first, but it was him and a small group of aritsts who chose that look back in the early 70s. Bands and artists like Roxy Music, Nick Gilder, T. Rex, The New York Dolls, Brian Eno and Co., Gary Glitter, The Sweet, and maybe KISS and Alice Cooper (though they did waaaay edgier Rock and Roll). I've always thought of the 80s Glam Rockers as playing second fiddle to the original brand of Glam Rock. I don't know, the pioneers got a lot of money and booze and women, but they also seemed to put some emphasis on creating new things, or, at least, improving on the old sounds (since there really isn't anything "new" under the sun). The 80s guys just seemed to rest on the laurels of someone else's concepts of presenting music. This is why Poison and Winger are who they are in the music scene, and why David Bowie and Bryan Ferry are who they are in the music scene (no doubt, as a nobody I wouldn't mind being Kip Winger myself ;D , but if I were to choose from the four artists above... there's no contest).

You forgot Adam Ant. I just think that it is really pitiful when a guy looks better in a dress than I do and there are many who do.   :-/

Me & a few of my friends used a poster of Nick Rhodes as a guide to putting on our makeup -- especially that eye liner!

That's not funny!!!! .......yeah ok, it is a little but it looks good on him! Especially the eyeliner, you can really see the green eyes. Nick is the only man who could look good in make up. Scratch that. All British guys somehow look good in makeup, not drag make up, but like what Nick did. American guys just look like they are trying to be British and end up looking like queens!

Howard when you get to that age you NEED the make up !!! ;D ;D Seriously though I think good for him at least he's still being true to who he is and he still looks great. As I said in another post why shouldn't a guy wear a bit of eyeliner or concealer to look better ??

If anything Boy George is wearing more make up now than he did in the eighties (at least when he was in the charts).  I saw both him and Pete Burns (from Dead or Alive) on TV last week.

Pete Burns has had loads of cosmetic surgery and now looks incredibly feminine in an overdone face lift sort of way.  His lips looked puffier than Leslie Ash's.

I saw a picture of Pete Burns a while ago & thought he looked very odd.  Kinda "alien like".  I wonder if he and Michael Jackson have the same plastic surgeon?  :-X

When I think of guys in makeup in the 80's, I don't think of wimpy 80's metal hair bands, I think of...

- David Sylvian of Japan
- Visage
- Gary Numan
- Duran Duran
- Pete Burns
- Depeche Mode (especially a certain Martin L. Gore <drool!>)
- Boy George
- Robert Smith of The Cure

...all of whom looked fabulous in makeup. And I still hate them for being able to do it better than me! Hehehehe...:D

Yes. That is the same image I get. Btw, David Bowie and Roxy Music notwithstanding, David Sylvian and his friends were the first New Romantic band to ever enter the scene in such a fashion for the 80s. They were doing it in the late 70s while they were cutting records. Nick Rhodes took direct influence from David Sylvian. He wanted to be David Sylvian fashionwise!

I like Martin L. Gore, period. The man is a genius.

Damn, Nick Rhodes looks hot in that picture!  However, I only ever liked the British new-wave band guys wearing makeup.  When the American heavy-metal guys did it, it just skeeved me!  I can't even look at that picture of the guy from Poison, or whomever it is.  Maybe it's those creepy pouty lips!

OK, here goes. I've had a few beers so bear with me.
If I met some of these guys in a bar I'd sleep with them. And that's what it's all about!! Sex appeal.
They wear make up to make themselves look better!
I mean if every woman looks better with some make up (exept maybe big tears and running mascara Tammy Bakker), then whose to say that some guys aren't going to look better with some too??
If you don't think guys look better with makeup then check out some she-male web sites.

Makeup for boys was really at its height in about 1972 in the UK (Bowie, Marc Bolan and T. Rex, The Sweet, Mudd - lots of the UK 'glam' bands went in for makeup in a big way). I must admit I myself have been known to dabble in a bit of lip-gloss and black nailvarnish  :o

Makeup came back in the early '80s with the 'New Romantics'. Incidentally, I once did an interview with David Sylvian on this very subject and I've just put it on my web site for those of you who might be interested.

Robert Smith from The Cure.  His big hair and way out makeup - how I was in love with that guy! ;D

No one made wearing crooked lipstick sexy, like good old Robert Smith.  I had HUGE posters of him all around my room.  What a honey.

Sure, well that started in the early 70s with T Rex and David Bowie leading the blush, lipstick, and eyeliner charge.
They looked like aesthetes in their make up and with their silk, satin and velvet finery, and camp mannerisms.

The 80s were strange because when the trend crossed the ocean to the States it took on a different slant. The American guys in music who wore makeup in the 80s snarled and tried to look tough, all the while wearing lipstick, high heels, and mascara. It was a truly bizarre sight to behold. I laugh thinking about it. Angry drag queens on stage weilding guitars.
I think the New York Dolls were the first I saw that demonstrated this particular phenomenon. Poison took it to the crassest extreme in the 80s. The phenomenon imploded after that.
