Subject: The Smiths- Who Else Is A Fan Here?

Written By: redhead007 on 02/19/03 at 05:52 p.m.

I haven't been on the boards that long, so I don't know if there's been a topic posted on this subject but I'll ask anyway.

I was wondering if anybody else is a Smiths fan out there. My favorite songs of theirs so far are A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours, I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, and Cemetery Gates.

Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before !

Yes, it has been posted here before, but it's always good to re-discuss one of my all-time favourite bands of yore!

Faves:

"How Soon Is Now?"
"Unlovable"
"Asleep"
"Never Had Noone Ever"
"Oscillate Wildly"
"I Know It's Over"
"Girlfriend In A Coma"

Usually, I just put all their CDs in a CD-changer and press . I can listen to all their albums back to back.

Apparently I have to turn in my Indie Kid membership card if I don't like them.

"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" is probably my favorite from them.

I like The Smiths! They were different. In a way they remind me of R.E.M. in the sense that half the time you didn't know what the hell they were singing about but liked them anyway. And unlike many other New Wave groups in the 80s, they had many good songs; not just one or two.

They were an odd group though. Their tunes sound so melodic and uplifting, but sometimes the lyrics to the contrary were quite depressing: "...to die by your side, what a wonderful way to die..." and so on.

That's what I always found to be so ironic about them, that their music could sound so happy but the lyrics be completely the opposite.

My favorite from them is That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore.

The Smiths are without a doubt one of the best bands of the 80's.  Even today, their music holds up very well compared to other popular bands at that time. I listened to them in the 80's, but much more so by the time I was in college.  I have many favorite songs, but a couple I can think of now are Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before and Death Of A Disco Dancer.

November Spawned A Monster and Everyday Is Like Sunday are great songs too, even though it's just Morrisey and not The Smiths.

Well I sure as hell am a fan of the band - I think me and Tarzan Boy are probably the biggest Smiths fans on the board. If anyone thinks they can challange us - then let me know! ;D

They are my all time favourite band - Morrisseys lyrics seem to speak to me :) I like some of his solo stuff - but much prefer the Smiths as a band.

I do have too many favourites to mention - but I will try!!

This Charming Man
Still Ill
Half A Person
Never Had No-One Ever
Unloveable
Hand That Rocks The Cradle
I Don't Owe You Anything
Pretty Girls Make Graves
This Night Has Opened My Eyes
What She Said
What Difference Does It Make
Panic
...But to be honest - there are only about 3 I dislike!! (Meat is Murder, Golden Lights and Miserable Lie I think! :])

If you like The Smiths, then check out 'Idlewild' (see avatar). They are a fantastic band who's lyrics are fantastic. And they've been heavily influenced by the Smiths. Check out 'You Held The World In Your Arms'.

All the stuff u all said and + the peculiar guitar composing/playing, some English words and references to authors and thing...
I'm Brazilian, live in Brazil and study English as second language in a self-taught way, and Morrissey simply drove me nuts a lotta times with these "ere", "thrice", etc.

Somber and yet fun.

There's a light that never goes out
Cemetery gates
Back to the old house
William it was really nothing
The boy with a thorn in his side
Some girls are bigger than others

Etc., etc., etc.

Yeah, I've noticed that Morrissey tends to use some archaic words in his songs. It's really too bad that they didn't become as popular here in the U.S. as they did over in the U.K. The only song of theirs here that people know about is How Soon Is Now, and that's because a cover of it is the theme to Charmed. Here, they were much more of a cult kind of thing.

They were popular here in the UK, but not too a mass extent. None of their songs (released first time around) got higher than number 9, i think? When 'This Charming Man; was re-issued in the early 90s it did a lot better. It's very much a cult thing now to liek them. I'm 18 and know only 3 other people who like the Smiths. And they're all boys. I'm yet to find another female fan of my age group.

There was another thread recently about cover songs from the 90s and I mentioned Love Spit Love's version of How Soon Is Now.  Love Spit Love was led by Psychedelic Furs lead singer Richard Butler.  Did any of you other Smiths fans like the Love Spit Love version?  BTW, I don't expect everyone to have liked it, but I thought they did it rather well.  Richard Butler's singing style, like Morrisey's, is so distinctive...

First time watching Charmed, I remember that I liked the cover because of the distorted guitars in the background. I think Richard Butler's voice was really rough as opposed to Morrissey' crooning but I thought it was definitely one of the better covers I've heard. As opposed to TATU's version.  :P

In a bizarre turn of events, Morrissey said he liked it!

He liked it... more than the last cover of it done by Snake River Conspiracy, which turns out to be one of the most hated covers by music fans of any type :P

I actually don't mind the Snake River Consiracy cover - it's better than any of the ones ones!

I quite like Sinead O'Connors live performance of 'Hand That Rocks The Cradle' too. If you haven't heard it - try to download it. The quality isn't that good - but I think she did well with it :]

My fave The Smiths song has got to be Girlfriend in a Coma. Such a quirky little song!  ;D I have to say, Morrissey could come up with some unusual lyrics! :)

One of their quirkiest songs, and one of my favorites, is A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours from their last album. Even though the lyrics are completely cryptic, I love the keyboard line and the introduction with Morrissey coming in soft and getting louder. Should've been a single. An underrated gem.

I like Girlfriend in a Coma too. And Bigmouth.

Morrissey is still singing Rush and a Push - saw him in concert last year! must be one of his faves as well.

Johnny Marr was kicking around Oz last week. Didn't get to see him though.

The Smiths, other than the Cure, defined the 80's for me as they were THE bands of my turbulant teens. Ah, the memories....!

When I saw Morrissey in concert last year - the only Smiths song he played were 'Hand In Glove' (which is predictable to any Smiths fan), 'I Want The One I Can't have (the opening song - which actually surprised me that he'd choose it!) and 'Meat Is Murder' (which I dislike immensly).

I heard "How Soon Is Now" and thought it was fantastic. So I downloaded that one and a bunch of others. But none of the others I listened to did I like at all.
I can't remember any of the names of the others now. But I deleted all of them and put How Soon Is Now onto a compilation CD.

I ADORE The Smiths!!!! Morrissey has spoken to me and touched me in ways no other singer has. There are so many songs that hold deep, personal meaning. A few examples would be "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore," "How Soon Is Now?," "I Know It's Over," and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." Morrissey's voice is beautiful and his songwriting is pure poetry. "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle" and "Suffer Little Children" are two of the most beautiful songs ever written.

There are really only three songs that I DON'T like: "Death Of A Disco Dancer," "Death At One's Elbow," and "Golden Lights." Thankfully, the latter was a cover of a song by Twinkle, and not written by Morrissey.

And what about the other band members? Johnny Marr - absolutely brilliant. One of the greatest musicians ever. Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce - highly underrated, talented musicians who, I think, don't get nearly enough credit than they deserve.

Meat Is Murder (the song): Yes, the song is disturbing, and reading the lyrics turned my stomach. But this was not a bad thing. Morrissey is making a poignant statement that animals should not suffer and die for human consumption. It turned me off meat for a while. I still believe what he says, and I feel like a hypocrite eating meat (even in small quantities) now, but I'd really like to go back to vegetarianism someday. It's hard though.

"How Soon Is Now?" covers: I don't know if I like any of them. I definitely don't like Love Spit Love's or TATU's versions. TATU's especially. I've looked at message boards where some people think it's a cover of a Love Spit Love song.  ::)

Anyway, enough of my ranting (for now anyway...) :P

Yeah, I've always felt that Morrissey dug deep into my soul and understood everything I've gone through. I've always felt better after listening to The Smiths when I get depressed. It's like therapy!! :)

No other singer/songwriter has had such an impact, with the exception of maybe Michael Stipe of R.E.M. with a few choice songs ("The Wrong Child" from the album Green being the best example). But Morrissey's been more consistent. I just adore the man.

The most shining moment of my life was when I finally got the opportunity to see The Great And Powerful Moz live in 2000. What I could have done with front row tickets and a backstage pass... I WISH!!!!!!

Anyhoo, I wish I'd known The Smiths while they were still around, but I don't think they really got a lot of airplay (or any)...at least not where I live. I just missed them unfortunately. Ah well, I still find them just as relevant now as they would have been when I was a teenager in the mid-late 80's.

Yes I do agree with you on the Michael Stipe front. Check out Idlewild if you haven't heard of them beacuse their lyrics 'speak to me' also :)

I managed to see Morrissey live last year - and it was fanatastic. Like you, I never knew the Smiths whilst they were still together - I was only 3 when they split up! Sometimes I wish I could have actually lived through the entire 80s!! Then again, maybe I wouldn't have appreciated them back then. :)

I was 14 when they split up (14 going on 15...hehehe). :) I was old enough to appreciate them, but unfortunately, living in a totally unhip city in Canada, I never really knew them much 'til I was 18 or 19 and just finishing school...which is a  shame really, because I could have used a band like that to get through teenage life. But as I said before, it's still as relevant to me now as it would have been then.

As for Idlewilde, I shall check them out!! I have heard of them and of how they seem to be Smiths-inspired. Thanks for the recommendation. :D

Listen to Criz, she has very good recommendations.

Btw, do you listen to Suede, James, Orlando, Aqualung, or any other Britpop bands? They're quite good and they seem to have carried on the tradition of The Smiths. I would also suggest Kent if you ever get a chance to listen to them. I'd like to think of Kent as sounding like The Smiths if they were to have formed in the 90s. They're not a band inspired by The Smiths though, so you still get an original sound (not that being heavily influenced by other bands is bad either...).

Suede and James, I like. In fact it was because I'm a Smiths fan that I got into them. Especially Suede. The first video I saw of theirs was Metal Mickey, and I thought the singer (Brett Anderson) oozed Morrissey in the way he presented himself. Great band. Incidentally, didn't Morrissey cover a song by Suede? I don't remember which one. I know he covered The Jam's "That's Entertainment," but I'm positive he covered Suede as well.

James I hadn't heard much of besides "Laid," but my husband likes them (he's from the UK) so I've heard more since and I like them. As for other Britpop bands, there are soooo many that I like (mostly from the 80's) that it would take a long time to list. I have yet to get into "the now" so to speak, but I'm really liking Radiohead these days. :)

Death of a Disco Dancer isn't that bad compared to Daeth at Ones Elbow. I really don't like Miserable Lie when the 'noise' kicks in, along with Morrisseys aparent 'screeching'!! The first bit is fine, and the lyrics are very good, but I cant listen to it!

I think many of the slower album tracks are highly underrated, such as:
- Unlovable
- Never Had No-One Ever
- Back To The Old House
- Wonderful Woman
- I Won't Share You
- Well I Wonder

...and the slightly more upbeat ones:
- What She Said
- Sweet And Tender Hooligan
- Stretch Out An Wait ( I prefer the 'All the lies that you make up, what's at the back of your mind' version better :))
- Pretty Girls Make Graves
- Girl Afraid
- I Don't Owe You Anything
- Half A Person
