Subject: Debs Gibson

Written By: Jose Ramos (guest) on 03/09/03 at 06:22 p.m.

O.K. I'll admit that I like Debbie (now Deborah) Gibson.
Unlike current teen queens,, she wrote, produced, her own material. She's now a huge Broadway Diva and still occasionally puts out albums. ("M.Y.O.B.",2001)

...about a year ago, my school counselor persuaded me to watch "A Walk To Remember",strarred teen queen Mandy Moore, and considered her a "great role model" for her kids.
I dissagreed and told her about a former teen queen who had a wide range of talent, but she laughed at my face. She claimed to be a former headbanger. She said that Debbie Gibson is a long forgotten has-been and has "no talent"!
How can a fan of Skid Row, Motley Crue,Warrant, etc. evolveinto a Mandy Moore lovin' soccer mom? (No offense to people in their early '30's.) Well, Deborah Gibson, Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, etc. are in their 30's,but that's not the case right now.

Other than that, early songs/videos from Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Cyndi Lauper were just as cheesy (in a good way) like Debbie Gibson!
And she's now successful  on Broadway.  Madonna did more flops than Flipper on the box office & Janet Jackson's recent album,in my opinion, was mediocre. Despite the fact that I'm not that much of a fan of theatre.

I know that there's still many people that like Deb Gibson.

Personally, I have a bit of a healthy crush on her. (I have a girlfriend!)  She also has one of the greatest voices I ever heard.

...What's your opinion about her and how could a former headbanger/Deb Basher evolve into a Mandy Moore fan?
(No offense to Mandy Moore fans)

Could you place your opinion about THE ORIGINAL TEEN QUEEN/BROADWAY DIVA. Possitve or Negative.
I'm open for any suggestion. It could even be about Debbie Gibson vs. Tiffany. Despite that I like "I Think We're Alone Now".  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I don't care if you disliked Debbie Gibson badly!
Or even a teenage crush!
Heck, you could even write about how messed teen pop is today! 8)

I'm certain she was a headbanger back in the 80's, they were everywhere back then.  I think I can offer some insight into your counselor's reactions to Debbie Gibson.  Now I don't know how old you are, but I'm 25, so I'm old enough to vividly remember when someone your counselor's age was a "cool" teenager/early 20's....if you know what I mean.  From what I remember about the 80's, most of the teenagers over 15 weren't into the Late 80's pre-teen stuff like Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, or New Kids on the Block.  I mean Tiffany was singing to 4-14/15 year olds at the malls back in 1988, so why would a 19 year old be into her?   Even fewer people in their early 20's were into Debbie Gibson or New Kids.  They were just too cool for stuff like that.  Sure there were exceptions, but from what I remember, the VAST majority of them thought they were above such kids stuff.  It was always looked at as an elementary or middle school thing.  Not for the high schoolers or college students.

I even remember back around that 1983-'85 time when Michael Jackson was MEGA POPULAR....I was in elementary school and so into him, but my older brother's and sisters that were teenagers felt they were just too cool for Jackson and put him down.  Secretly I know they thought his stuff was cool, (how else could he have been so popular), but they were in that phase were they couldn't admit it.  If your school counselor was a headbanger back then, that means she was even more snobby about such things then a typical 80's teen, as she was into the more harder/intense stuff.

Sometimes I wonder about this point you bring up.  I've noticed this even among people around my age who are in their 20's have been turning into soccer moms (or soccer dads).  I even know a girl in her early 20's who acts like a soccer mom.  I remember when they used to love all the controversial stuff, but now they think there's too much violence and sex everywhere.  I guess it comes with growing up.

As to your school counselor, I suspect she feels more detached to Mandy Moore.  Mandy Moore is not a part of her generation, so she can approve of her lighthearted bubble gum pop.  But as soon you as mention Debbie Gibson or New Kids on the Block, you're school counselor will flash back to when she was younger in the 80's and "too cool" for such  elementary/middle school music.  So for a brief moment she starts thinking the way she did as an older teenager and starts to laugh at Debbie Gibson.  And she will probably never admit that she used to listened to music that adults didn't approve of back then too.  Bring up Tipper Gore and the PMRC and I bet she'll act like it never happened.

Hope my input helped....

By the way, tell your school counselor what I told you about why I think she reacted that way.  I'm certain I'm dead on on calling her out as a former teen snob.  High schoolers/younger college students are always like that, no matter what generation.  I know I always hated my teenage brothers and sisters acting like they were too cool for Michael Jackson back in 1984/'85.

And most, not all, but most of the people that were real 80's teenagers and actually graduated high school somewhere in the 1980's were too cool for the Late 80's pre-teen/young teen bubblegum scene, or anything else that was blatantly targeted at elementary or middle school kids.  An 80's headbanger would definately be too cool for Debbie Gibson.  It would be like asking a Marlyin Manson or Eminem fan to start dancing to Britney Spears.  But since your counselor is in her 30's now, she can look at Mandy Moore through adult eyes and think she's OK.

Thanks for your insight Paul S.
I would like to talk to my school counselor, but I already graduated last year. (That'll give my age away.) I'll try to contact her by calling my school. (or finding her name in the phone book)  :)

I graduated highschool in 2002. (When "A Walk To Remember" was released) And remember listening to pop music from the late 1980's/early 1990's.  I have friends that listen to both Eminem & N'Sync. I tend to listen to new wave and some '80's pop acts. Yes, If I were to be a teen in the 1980's, I would probably be a fan of The Cure & Depeche Mode and a closet Debbie Gibson fan. If they existed.

Well, between 1987/1990. I actually work in a used CD store...so it's more liable for generation gaps to collide.
And I wonder what would happen if I show my girlfriend, who's a fan of Sally Field's movies, "The Flying Nun"? ::)
Best if I didn't try.  :)

Well, I know the past is the past.  :)
It came up in my head a few days ago.
Ironically, I tend to listen to Bon Jovi, Poison, and some pop metal. Not to mention new wave. The cheerful Go Go's to the moody sounds of The Smiths. And some old school hip hop on the side. Add some '90's alternative with some '70's pop minus the disco & post '90's teen pop. Well with exception of  The Bee Gees.

I have respect for Deborah Gibson. Aside from being mutli-talented and doing her own work in most phases, I respect the fact that she didn't stoop down to degrading herself, she didn't go stripping off her clothes and her dignity to revive her career like Tiffany did. There's definitely something to be said for that.

Besides, Gibson's material was always better than Tiffany's and any other teen stars of the time. If there were others, they were not memorable.

Agree.  :) Atleast she opened up for N'Sync in 2001 instead of posing nude or appearing on some cheesy reality show eating Alpo (dog food). I actually feel sorry for Tiffany when she decided to pose nude because her recent album was critically acclaimed by the music critics, but a flop by record sales. I'm not a fan of Tiffany, but the music industry should give many artists a chance. Tiffany's recent album was said to be similar to Alanis Morissette. Ironically, (no pun intended) Alanis was a teen pop idol in Canada during the late 1980's/early '90's & appeared on a kids' show in the mid '80's. If Alanis, the teen queen, were to be huge in the US, "Jagged Little Pill" might've been a flop.  Deborah Gibson should get more respect as a singer/song writer with her 2 recent albums. ("Deborah",1997 & "M.Y.O.B.",2001) At least she's well recieved in the theatre circut. :)

I agree that Debbie Gibson is far more talented than today's "teen queens" and as Hairspray said, she has far more class than any of them.  My fav song was "In Your Eyes".  Tiffany wasn't bad, but D. G. blew her out of the water, talent-wise.

Not to sound like a smart alec, but It's "Lost In Your Eyes", a great ballad though.   8) Atleast I didn't get any negative responses.  8) Deb does has more class and talent compared to current "teen queens". Britney,Christina,Mandy...take some notes.

how old is your couselor?????  I was in the 13-15 year old range when DG came out and she was huge among those that were into pop.  I agree with Paul S.  Although my cousin was 5 years older than me at that time and she like DG and most of the pop music.  I'm still a DG fan.  I was never into Tiff.  I liked a  couple of her songs, but I thought DG was better.  I like Mandy Moore too.  I think out of all the teen queens of today is the better talent.  Britney cannot sing as far as I'm concerned.  I think her voice sucks and her image is really trashy and has already gotten old.  I also am a fan of Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton, but I don't consider them teen pop queens.  I think Christina Aquilera could have a good voice, but she tries to hard and feels that lack of clothes are the only way to express herself.  You can see how a popstar dresses influences teens.  I remember dressing like DG.  The 'rents didn't object.

:-X Sorry, I just suspended myself for a disturbing comment regarding "The Flying Nun". It's in the "Worst '60's TV Shows"
section in "Before the 1970" messageboard.

It was a "Miami Vice" parody featuring Siser Bertrille & Carlos Remirez. And special guest: Vanity.  :-X
I'll answer some comments by Saturday the 15th of March.

I only expressed my opinions about classicTV.

My counselor is about 34 years old. (I think?)

Actually no. I will continue with this post.
I was told that "The Flying Nun" was just a dumb show &
It's not controversial to diss the show like MST3K does to ols Sci Fi movies.

I also like some songs from Michelle Branch & Vanessa Carlton.  I have nothing against Mandy Moore, but her music isn't my cup of tea. I just don't like current teen pop.
But I actually have an eclectic taste of music. From The Beatles to The White Stripes.

I tend to "correct" myself.

With the last 2 or 3 posts, I tend not to think before I write. (execpt for this comment)

Sorry if I was a tad annoying beacause I'm not well adjusted on writing in messageboards. So don't be offended.  :)  Why I respond to my own posts? I try to correct myself. And ...nev'mind. This will eventually sound like a lame excuse.

Why "Deborah Gibson" for a topic? Maybe because she's one of the greatest entertainers of the last two decades. My second choice was "Worst TV Shows of the 1980's",but I skipped the idea. :D

Why I wrote these comments in different colors? Because I'm getting used to writing on a messageboard.

It's quite interesting when I write messages. It's more creative than posting opinions on guest books. 8)
