Subject: Cool 80's bands that disappeared

Written By: Eli_Sheol on 03/11/03 at 09:06 a.m.

I went through about ten pages of threads looking for this particular one. It was becoming too time consuming though so I just decided to start a new one and hope no one castigates me for starting a thread that's already been started.

Anyway, here are a few cool 80's bands that disappeared:

Missing Persons of "Walking In LA", "Words" and "Windows" fame.

Siren of "All Is Forgiven" fame.

Planet P of "Why Me" and "Static On The Radio" fame.

Thomas Dolby of "Blinded By Science" and "Europa And The Pirate Twins" and "One Of Our Submarines Is Missing" fame.

Living Colour of "Cult Of Personality" fame.

I agree with Living Colour, but to me they were more of an early 90s band as they didn't really come to prominence until the 'Time's Up' album in 1990.

Planet P Project was really pretty much just Tony Carey.  He still tours a lot and is practically worshipped in Germany.  He has some pretty recent material, including Planet P Project material, but the latter (PPP) collection has not been released (yet) http://www.tony-carey.com/

Thomas Dolby still makes music but mostly directs videos, and designs computer programs and games.  Here is a glimpse of what he is doing:  http://www.tdolby.com/index_frameset.html

Missing Persons appeared & sang "Destination Unknown" on
"Access Hollywood" last year.  8)
It was a part of an hour long retrospect of poular music in 1982. The special was also co-hosted by Nina Blackwood, one of the original MTV VJ's. I doubt that it'll repeat. It repeated two times. During Decenber,2002 and early January of 2003.
The special profiled Men At Work,Survivor,Grand Master Flash,
Berlin, and a few other notable acts from the time. :)

They didn't mention any "reunion tour" or new album on the show.  :-/

Who knows, "Access Hollywood" might do a 1983 special later this year and have Duran Duran, Def Leppard,or Billy Idol perfom. Or 1993,OK with me, with Toad The Wet Sprocket or
Naughty By Nature.   ::)

Here in the States, 1988's Vivid was by far their biggest seller, and produced the most hits ("Cult of Personality", "Open Letter ", and "Glamour Boys"), Goreripper. By comparison, 1990's Time's Up was pretty much a flop (and thus considered a disappointment), which is why they're thought of more as an '80s band here. ("Cult of Personality" is considered their "signature song".) Nice to know the album did better elsewhere, though...

In all fairness, FOXVOX, the group was known as simply "Planet P" until their second album, Pink World, was released in November of '84. I've been a huge TC fan since '83, and bought the first Planet P album that Summer - although Geffen did change the group name on later re-issues, original pressings of the '83 album had them billed as just "Planet P". Don't know why the group felt the need to change it in '84... :-)

Culture Club did VH1's "Storytellers" about 4-5 years ago and released a double-CD in conjunction with it. They also put an album out called "Don't Mind If I Do" in 1999. I expect to see them around and about again soon as a Culture Club box set was recently unleashed upon the world.

As for the Human League, guess what? They're still recording! "Secrets" was released in August 2001 in the States. It was the first thing released here since "Octopus" back in 1995 which spawned the almost-hit single "Tell Me When".

Timex Social Club, as you know, had "Rumors" hit big and then they vanished. Follow-up singles performed poorly and the threat of a lawsuit from Timex didn't help. That's when producer Jay King pulled the plug and started over with Club Nouveau ("new club").

Club Nouveau actually released two singles before "Lean On Me" went to #1: "Jealousy", which was nearly a note-for-note reworking of "Rumors", and "Situation #9". After that, they had their single "Why You Treat Me So Bad" scrape its way to #39 and that was that. Club Nouveau released albums well into 1995 but none of them made a dent. They finally disbanded in the late 90's.

That's quite interesting, because the only hit they had on this side of the world was "Love Rears Its Ugly Head". "Bi" was also a radio favourite. Both of those were from the albums that came out after Vivid. So from my perspective, they were more of an 90s phenomonon (although I personally was aware of them before that).  ;D

Alrighty then. Huey and the boys are actually still out there. Mind you, they haven't had a really high-profile hit since "Couple Days Off" and "It Hit Me Like a Hammer" back in 1991. When the follow-up album "Four Chords and Several Years Ago" failed to attract buyers, Huey spiralled down the dark road. (Cue that sad "Behind the Music" score here.) Huey Lewis and the News became...A VEGAS ACT. Yes, following in the proud footsteps of Wayne Newton, Tom Jones and David Lee Roth, Huey and the guys took it to Sin City. All hope isn't lost, though. The band actually released a new album in 2001 entitled "Plan B" and it's still in print if you want it.

Cameo has recorded into the 21st century but the band has had a relatively low profile since about 1991. They still continued to release albums and tour but with little promotion or fanfare. Lead singer Larry Blackmon even spent a few years as the vice president of A&R at Warner Brothers Records. Cameo is, at this point, what seems to be an intermittent unit. They haven't really broken up but haven't really done anything either.

Back to work now that the weekend is over. :)

Although I personally can't abide the Georgia Satellites, here's the deal. They put out three albums for Elektra back in the 80's: the self-titled debut, "Open All Night", and "In the Land of Salvation and Sin". Out of all those albums, "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" was their only U.S. top 40 hit. The only other time they even came close was with their cover of "Hippy Hippy Shake" from the "Cocktail" soundtrack. The Satellites gave it up after the third album and lead singer Dan Baird pursued a solo career. He had a minor hit in 1992 with "I Love You Period". Anyone that's read the "Worst songs of the 90's" thread on the 90's board already knows what I think of this song. The band actually reformed in 1997 WITHOUT Dan Baird and released an album called "Shaken Not Stirred" on a small label.

Go West never really came back from their brush with success in the early 90's. They struggled through the 80's in the U.S. just missing the top 40 twice with "We Close Our Eyes" and "Call Me". The thirds single from their debut, "Eye to Eye", barely made a splash. They scraped a remix of a single from their first album, "Don't Look Down", into the 40 at last in 1987 with the release of their second album, "Dancing on the Couch". Of course, it was "King of Wishful Thinking" that finally catapulted them to success here. After one more notable single, "Faithful", Go West went south. Lead vocalist Peter Cox released a solo album in 1997 and an EP just last year. Guitarist Richard Drummie has worked with artists such as Deborah Gibson and Billie Myers.

The New Power Generation still exists in a form. The members circulate rather regularly but the NPG is still an entity.

Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam broke up after the release of "Straight Outta Hell's Kitchen" in 1991 after the first single "Let the Beat Hit 'Em" didn't generate much steam. Lisa Lisa (who came into this life as Lisa Velez) released an unsuccessful solo album entitled "LL 77" in 1994 and that was that.

Looking for more of an epilogue? Here's some info courtesy of divastation.com:

"Though Lisa Lisa has not released a follow-up to her debut solo project, she is neither inactive nor forgotten. As a participant in the 1999 Billboard Magazine Dance Music Conference in New York, Lisa Lisa assumes the mantle of dance music authority and legend. As one of the first Latin divas to gain international notoriety performing English language material in the rock era, Lisa Lisa is truly a marvel. By incorporating elements of rap, hip-hop, dance and pop into her own personal musical landscape as a Puerto Rican resident of one of New York's toughest ghettos, she has acheived what many have only attempted. While her many chart-topping singles have earned her a permanent place within the lexicon of American music, it is her frankness, pride and beauty that mark her a diva."

Just for the record, her "many chart-topping singles" number precisely TWO in the U.S. :)

Ah, Survivor. That name seems kind of funny now since they haven't had a song in the top 40 since "Is It Love" back in 1986. Survivor released one more album after that hit: 1988's "Too Hot to Sleep". In 1989, the band put themselves to sleep by breaking up. After eight years of silence, the band reunited in 1997 bringing back original vocalist Dave Bickler. Apparently Jimi Jamison, the singer that replaced Bickler in 1983, couldn't stand not being included and returned to the fold shortly thereafter. I couldn't find any evidence of any albums released after the reunion but I'm sure you can probably catch Survivor at quality state fairs and flammable night clubs in Rhode Island if you keep your eyes peeled.

As for the J. Geils Band, everything crumbled shortly after the biggest hits of their career, "Centerfold" and "Freeze Frame". Wolf had written some material with Don Covay and Michael Jonzun, two R&B semi-legends. When the rest of the band refused to record it, Wolf split. He went on to record a few solo hits such as "Lights Out" and "Come As You Are". The J. Geils Band itself with vocals being assumed by band member Seth Justman. Their first and only album after Wolf's departure was "You're Gettin' Even While I'm Gettin' Odd". The only single I can recall from that album is "Concealed Weapons" which tanked big time. (On a personal note, I can see why. It's a lousy song. "No Anchovies Please" has more charm in it's two minutes than this song.) The band wrapped it up in 1985. Geils went on to form the blues band, Bluestime, in 1993.

Ah, the Whispers! Thirty years of R&B heritage! The Whipsers formed waaaaay back in 1964 in Los Angeles. They disbanded back in 1993. Sadly, in their expansive career, "Rock Steady" was their only top 10 pop hit. You've heard "And the Beat Goes On" though. Even if you don't think you have, you have...as a sample on Will Smith's single "Miami".

The Invisible Man's Band were all former members of the Five Stairsteps, the band responsible for the soul classic (and personal fave of mine) "O-o-h Child". That song you remember is pretty much all there is to remember. They had only one self-titled album and they were history.

I was excited to find The Blow Monkey's "She Was Only A Farmer's Daugher" the other month on CDNow.  That was a band that covered the gambit of pop and jazz.  Dr Robert had some solo stuff after their couple of albums, but fell off the face of the earth.  They had a couple of singles (Digging Your Scene and It Doesn't Have To Be This Way), but probably made the most money for the cover of "You Don't Own Me" on the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack.  This is my nomination of "Really Great 80's Band That Fell Off The Face Of The Earth".

Genesis pretty much should have folded once Phil Collins left. Their first studio album with new vocalist Ray Wilson, "Calling All Stations", didn't do squat back in 1997. Fans didn't seem to like it, radio didn't play it and critics destroyed it on the whole. There hasn't been a studio album since.

The Gap Band is actually still actively recording and touring. The last album I could find by them is the 1999 release "Y2K: Funkin' Till 2000 Comz" which includes guests like Snoop Dogg and DJ Quik.

Funny you should choose those two particular acts. In both cases, the lead singer ended up getting so much attention that the band ended up just falling by the wayside and vanishing from sight.

Miami Sound Machine, of course, got the boot first. Estefan's popularity grew exponentially after the "Primitive Love" album which spawned three U.S. top 10 hits back in 1986. When "Let It Loose" arrived in 1988, suddenly it was "Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine". By the time "Cuts Both Ways" was released, MSM wasn't even being billed. Miami Sound Machine still exists in a fashion. Anybody backing Estefan up now is pretty much Miami Sound Machine. They just don't get the respect they deserve.

Same goes for the poor suckers in the New Bohemians. Edie Brickell ate up the spotlight in late 1988 with her oh-so-earthy charm and the band got shoved into the background. They released two albums with Brickell before pretty much being shoved out by the record company. They were really only interested in Brickell and only took the New Bohemians because Edie originally balked. Oh, but that faded quickly once she started boinking Paul Simon. The band went away and Edie released a critically-maligned and buyer-ignored solo album called "Picture Perfect Morning" back in 1994. Except for a few "Best Of" collections, Brickell hasn't released a thing in almost a decade. I guess Paul's keeping her home now doing whatever it is they do. Ugh. Awful mental image.

Surprise! The Tom Tom Club are still together. The band is, as you probably know, a side project for Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads. They released three albums in the 80's and yet another in 1991 after the break-up of the Heads. A long hiatus began after that but the band came back in 2000 with "The Good, the Bad and the Funky". A live album was released last year simply called "Live @ the Clubhouse".

I'm not sure what to make of the B-52's anymore. They haven't released a new studio album since 1992's "Good Stuff". However, if that album was any indication of things to come, it can stay that way. (Just my personal observation, mind you.) The band has continued to tour extensively (I saw them in 1998. Cindy Wilson was out of practice and consequently VERY off-key the whole show. That was 5 years ago, though.) and release hits packages. The most recent was the 2-CD set "Nude on the Moon". However, it doesn't look like anything new is on the horizon past a couple tracks they threw onto the "Time Capsule" collection back in 1998.

It's a sort of spin on Pop Idol / American Idol but with singers who were big stars (at least in the UK) in the 70s and 80s travelling the USA on a tour bus and doing live shows. Each week somebody gets booted off the bus. Peter Cox has been winning the votes every week so far.

Wendy James of Transvision Vamp went solo in the mid 90s. She made one album with all of the songs written by Elvis Costello but it was a complete flop. I read later that Elvis Costello claimed to have written all the songs in a single day and that he did it for a joke. Sounds a pretty mean thing to do (if it's true).

Let's do Letter "C"

Cutting Crew

Cars

Poor Cutting Crew. No respect. After their "Broadcast" album, they fell a long way down. Their second album, "The Scattering", yielded only one chart single in the U.S. ("Rock and a Hard Place" which peaked at #77.) Although the second single, "Everything But My Pride", did well on the adult contemporary charts, it was largely ignored by everyone else.  Apparently a third album entitled "Compus Mentus" was released but I don't believe it was available in the U.S. The band gave it up in 1993. Guitarist Kevin Scott McMichael died at the end of 2002.

The Cars gave it up in 1987 after their "Door to Door" album wasn't quite the hit anyone expected after the juggernaut that was "Heartbeat City". Ocasek went on to do numerous solo albums and produce work for other artists. Benjamin Orr recorded one solo album ("The Lace") and, as many know, passed away in October 2000.

Upon doing some research, I couldn't find anything to verify whether or not Skyy still functions as a unit or not. I can verigy, though, that they actually recorded through 1992. The last album from '92 was called "Nearer to You". While they didn't continue to make splashes on the main charts in their career, they did continue to do relatively well on the R&B charts.

The Steve Miller Band are defunct by the looks of things. They never really hit it big again after "Abracadabra" but kept recording up until 1993. Miller himself oversaw the creation of a Steve Miller Band box set back in 1994. Since then, only a series of greatest hits albums have been released as far as I can see.

And Madness for PoP. They're still recording even though they keep swearing they're done. They released an album of new material back in 1999 entitled "Wonderful". Here's a "wonderful" blurb from allmusic.com that says it best:

"Madness officially disbanded in 1986, but the members never seemed content to call it quits. Finally, after 13 years, six singles collections, five 'Madstock' reunion concerts, three ill-fated spin-off attempts, two live CDs, and two box sets, the boys worked up enough courage to celebrate their 20th anniversary with their first new album since Mad Not Mad."

They made a comeback in '98 with 'Love struck'. (A strange little ditty including the line 'I've fallen for a lampost' :)). I'm pretty sure they've doen afew concerts lately for VH1 in the UK and Suggs has never stopped singing.

Animotion in their original form released two albums: their eponymous debut and 1986's overlooked "Strange Behavior". Shortly afterwards, almost the entire original line-up of the band left leaving only one original member. Vocalists Astrid Plane and Bill Wadhams were replaced by Cynthia Rhodes (Mrs. Richard Marx) and Paul Engemann, formerly of Device. They charted the top 10 hit "Room to Move" in 1989 (which was originally done by Climie Fisher on their album "Everything"). Since then, Plane and Wadhams and a few other members have toured as Animotion for various 80's tours.

ABC has recorded as recently as 1997 with their album "Skyscraping" which was their first album in six years. ABC released a live album entitled "Lexicon Live" in 1999 and a hits collection in 2001. They haven't charted in the U.S. top 40 since "When Smokey Sings" back in 1987.

Squeeze look like they're still out there. The line-up has changed a bit with the departure of Jools Holland (replaced by his brother, Christopher) and others but they're there. The last studio album they did was "Domino" back in 1998.

Starpoint hasn't made a peep since 1990. However, they did one sizable crossover hit aside from the one you mentioned. "Object of My Desire" went to #25 on the U.S. hot 100 back in 1985.

As for AIM, I'm on there almost daily during daylight hours Monday through Friday. Keep your eyes peeled.

Mustn't forget Barnabas. Their 1986 album "Little Foxes" is the best heavy-metal album I've ever heard.  Some of the lyrics were quite controversial.

Even though their debut album was released in 1976, The Alan Parsons Project were good in their day. Turn Of A Friendly Card and Eye In the Sky were their best albums. Last I heard them was on the Mark & Brian Radio Program in '99.

Asia has been an on-and-off thing for ages since they were a supergroup to begin with. They originally broke up in 1985 but reformed in 1990 to throw together a few new songs for a greatest hits collection. They toured and threw a couple more new albums our way: "Aqua" in 1992 and "Aria" in 1994. It's been might quiet on the Asia front ever since.

I don't know about Journey touring with Perry. I know Steve Perry had health problems and kept a relatively low profile for a while. When Journey toured back in 1996, Perry opted out and the band toured with a Perry sound-alike named Steve Augeri. Augeri actually recorded an album with Journey in 2001 entitled "Arrival".

On that note, I'm going to take a break from doing this research for a few days. I have a pretty sizable project to do here at home that's going to take up a ton of my time. I'll be back on it sometime next week. :)
