Subject: Acid Rock

Does anyone remember this music category term?
It was used to describe like KISS or Alice Cooper.
I'll still say it on occasion, and I get blank stares and "Wha?"

I swear I didn't make it up.

Right? ???

Actually I always thought "acid rock" was more often used to describe bands like Jimi Hendrix Experience, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Mountain and (early) Grand Funk Railroad. Certainly bands like Alice Cooper and Kiss were more adequately described as "shock rockers".  ;D

I know that the group "Yes" was often referred to as acid rock.  I love their music!  I think the phrase was coined to describe how music sounds like when the listener is on acid (not that I'd know what that feels like or anything!).

Not to mention that a lot of the artists involved were on acid when they recorded their music.  ;D

I think the term "acid rock" actually was coined in the 60's when acid was getting alot of attention and rock singers started to experiment with it along with a lot of other people.
Later it became a euphemism for any rock and roll that was really heavy like Grand Funk, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Montrose. That kind of stuff.
I heard the term used all the time growing up in the 70's. But the term sort of faded out and was replaced by terms like "thrash metal" or just "thrash".

I may have gotten the year/decade wrong, but at least I know that there was such a term.
