Subject: Real Metal?

Written By: Metalsky on 03/23/03 at 10:02 a.m.

I went back quite a few pages looking for any threads on real metal. but, nothing  :-/ ..

I really miss the 80's, especially the music. Playing in local bars and taking a few road trips with a few different bands i was in back then. It was the most fun I ever had.

I started out playing plain rock like the Rolling stones then to glam like motley crue then to metallica/slayer then on to punk .. DRI, Sudden impact etc. and finally going back to VH, GnR etc.

But the real metal I am talking about is

Judas Priest(best technical metal)
Iron Maiden (best melodic metal)
Black Sabbath(dio) (best full sound)

thats the stuff I grew up on.

Along came Motley crue and started the glam/pretty boy era.
And along with that came the girls, girls, girls.
The big hair/hairspray, tight tight jeans, high heels, mini skirts , oh how I miss highschool lol.

Anyway, was just wondering if anyone else liked that stuff, and not the frilly glam rock of poison, dokken, ratt, etc. I can remember listening to metallica back in the early 80's when everyone hated them because they were too heavy, now they're so commercial.

Anyway i have blabbed enough, and thanks for the board it is nice to find a place dedicated to a time when I was growing up.

up the irons!!

"Real Metal"? I guess you're refering to Heavy Metal. Groups like Motorhead, Anthrax, Anvil, Merciful fate, or at the very least; Megadeath, Iron Maiden and Armored Saint. Sorry, I'm just one of those candy ass Hair Metal rockers (I guess the proper term today would be a "Melodic Rocker").

Don't get me wrong, I don't despise Heavy Metal. With the exception of Judas Priest, Riot, VVI, and Iron Maiden I just never really went that hard. I consider the "Heavy" side of Metal to be the darker shade of the Rock and Roll rainbow. But the other colors belong there too.

Groups like Dokken, Queensryche, House of Lords, Saxon, Whitesnake, Great White, Winger, Warrent, Y&T, TNT, Scorpions, Kiss, Yngwie Malmsteen,...etc. were the groups that I was and still am into.

Strange though: Out of all Metal cliques, from Glammers, to Hard Rockers, to Melodic Rockers, to Heavy Metalers; I haven't met a Rocker yet who didn't like Queensryche. That sais alot!

I don't hear Overkill mentioned much. They had some tough music. Under The Influence is a great album.

Metalsky, Back in 83 or 84 a freind gave me Metallica's Ride The Lightning. Man, what a great album. I still have it on vinyl. Probably one of the best true HEAVY METAL albums ever. I went to see Judas Priest last year here in Philly and Anthrax. What a show. Ripper sounded great but no one can replace Halford. What do you think? Although I love all forms of Metal, the heavy stuff just freakin rocks. I had the pleasure of seeing Iron Maiden also. Does EDDIE rule or what?

I'm pretty sure Queensryche qualify as "Real Metal."

My sentiments exactly, Metalsky!

You may find this site informational... http://www.melodicrock.com/

I remember having a program director in 1983 who said that "Metallica is never going to be anything" and told me to stop playing them.  10 years later I was his boss and forced him to eat his words.

Heh. When I was at school, I was one of the few people who even knew who Metallica was. Then in 1992, at a friend's 21st birthday party, all the people who dissed me for listening to them were rocking out to the 'Black' album like they'd been fans all their lives. "Hey man, you were right about this band," they would say. "Yeah, I know," I would reply. "But they suck now."  ;D

;)  LOL.  I have to admit I liked the 'Black' album even though it screamed of BOB ROCK --not necessarily a bad thing, but I think long-time fans were shocked by the seemingly over-produced result.  Perhaps a more subtle transition would have been wiser. . ? I haven't really enjoyed them much thereafter.  And it's not totally a 'production' issue; it's more like an energy/texture issue.

I thought 'Black' was great, but it was just that by the time my old school chums had discovered how cool Metallica was, I had discovered Morbid Angel and Entombed.  ;D

Well I never could stand Iron Maiden and bands like Black Sabbath,AC/DC,Judas Priest etc I liked odd songs from.I was and still am at heart a glam queen however I did have a heavier or should that be darker side ;D
I liked Metallica,Anthrax,Armoured Saint,Overkill,Helloween and saw them all live except Armoured Saint.I have to say when the death metal thing happened I didn't ,never could grasp that idea, though my fiance has tried and failed to enlighten me !! I did used to go and see his band alot but then I had an ulterior motive in their case.;D ;D

;D I fail to see how you could like Helloween and not like Iron Maiden.  It's a bit like liking ice cream, but not liking chocolate ice cream.  :)

I know, I'm weird what can I say. I hate Bruce's voice for a start and yet as you say Helloween are not disimilar.Maybe it's the German bit of my genes! ;D
I saw Iron Maiden live a couple of times and was bored out of my mind.(I know take me outside and call the firing squad)

80'S BRITISH METAL IS THE BEST-TOTALLY METAL-UNLIKE US METAL-MOSTLY "GLAM" METAL IS AN EIGHTIES THING-I USED TO DITCH SCHOOL TO LEARN EVERY PRIEST LICK TIPTON PLAYED...RANDY RHOADS IS THE EXCEPTION-HE HAD A "GLAM" METAL BAND FROM THE WEST COAST AND LIVED IN ENGLAND TO RECORD THE 2 ALBULMS WITH OZZY-OZZY IS A BIG INFLUENCE IN METAL-WHY? BECAUSE HE ACTUALLY LISTENED TO WHAT THE KIDS WERE LISTENING TOO THEN...BACK THEN IT WASNT ABOUT AIR PLAY OR REALLY THE MONEY..IT WAS ABOUT "MOVING" MASSES OF PEOPLE ,DRIVEN BY ONE FORCE-MUSIC-MAIDEN SOLD THE BIGGEST VENUES BY FAR-

Man I've never heard anyone mention Zebra. I thought they were great. Too bad they came and went so fast. Kind of like Fastway.

LOL Eli! Yep I remember thier one hit song "Say what you will" I used to tell that to my ex GF, man she could get in my face and scream at me for hours (she was hispanic) so I used to sing a line to her from that song, "say what you will, and you WILL!" That was the only thing that would get her so angry that she would storm off and leave me in peace  :D
