Subject: I also liked Charlie Sexton

For some reason I really used to like Charlie Sexton's voice.  I still listen to his early albums every once in a while.  I also thought he was kind of cute looking (with his 'teased to the sky' hair, sunken in cheeks, and pouty lips).  I liked how on his first album (Pictures For Pleasure) he had a slight British accent to his voice.

Charlie Sexton did have huge hair! I saw his "Beat So Lonely" video on VH-1 Classics recently. He had a distinctive voice, especially seeing that he was so young when he recorded his first album. I wonder whatever happened to him?

From that same album... he also did a really cool cover of the Hoodoo Gurus' "I Want You Back".  :)

In the early 90s Mr. Sexton moved on to form "Arc Angels" with Doyle Bramhall II (son of prolific blues writer Doyle Bramhall; see: Stevie Ray Vaughan) and Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton (2 members of SRV's Double Trouble).  The eponymously-titled album was produced by Little Steven.  Unfortunately, their label (DGC) was focused on the then little-known band, Nirvana and their genre was soon to be swallowed up by 'grunge'.

Since then, Charlie played with Ron Wood, Keith Richards, Don Henley and a whole lotta Bob Dylan.  He also recently produced a Double Trouble album featuring Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, Dr. John, Susan Tedschi & Jimmy Vaughan.; and an album for Lucinda Williams.

Are you referring to "Pictures for Pleasure", Fox? I have it and I don't remember a Hoodoo Gurus cover. I love his version of "Space", though. I think I ultimately prefer it over Cheap Trick's version on "Lap of Luxury" and I LOVE Cheap Trick.

Sadly, my biggest memory of Sexton past that first album was the hideous cover of "Cry Little Sister" he did on his second album. I just couldn't get into it at all. That and it's the extended mix of "Beat's So Lonely" playing in the background when Elias Koteas and his friends come to beat the crap out of the pretty people in "Some Kind of Wonderful".

Oh my God, NewRo.  I am totally insane.  I have cross-pollenated Mr. Sexton with Simon F (from "Gun" 1985).  Both MCA & Chrysalis had black 12" sleeves and that is probably what tripped me up.  Still, I'm pretty embarrassed.   :-[  PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT DJ BEHIND THE CURTAIN!

No worries. I like Simon F as well although I only have "Never Never Land" and his F Machine project. I've been looking for "Gun" for some time.
