Subject: Who sang Wrathchild better? Paul or Bruce?

Written By: V-MAX on 03/28/03 at 10:30 p.m.

I got into a heated argument with some Brits on a U.K. Rock chat. They act like Bruce Dickenson can walk on water.

Don't get me wrong; the guy has a Rocking voice and he did well with Iron Maiden. But I don't think he was better than Paul Dianno, just different.

I couldn't expect Dianno to execute "Two minutes to midnight", "Run to the hills" or "Aces high" and be taken seriously. That's Bruces territory. But hearing Bruce Dickenson sing "Wrathchild" sounded rediculous to me. Pitiful is more like it!

Wrathchild, Murders in the Rue Morge, and the rest of early Iron Maiden is Paul Dianno's turf and I truly believe he kicks ass vocally on anybody who dares tread on it! Hearing Paul sing Wrathchild gives me goosebumps. Nobody can sing it as good as him!

To sing Wrathchild properly, it takes a voice that can force a religeous person to pray, cause nightmares, scare small animals, and give the Pope a heart attack. Who else but Dianno could do it? NOBODY! Not even Bruce comes close!

I've met and interviewed Paul Dianno when he was with his band 'Dianno' He's one of the nicest blokes you could meet and personally I think his voice is a million times better than Bruce's, but then as I've mentioned before I can't stand Iron Maiden and Bruce's voice anyway !!

Yeah Paul did 'Wrathchild' better. Bruce always tries to make it a big epic screaming song, but it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be angry and sinister, and Di'anno's voice was better for that. His voice fit the punkier feel of the first Iron Maiden album, but they would never have got as big as they did with him out front. Bruce is a technically better singer, he's better songwriter and a better front man. Plus Paul had a drinking problem even then. He could have gone on to capitalise on his time in Maiden, but all he's ever done since is relive it.

Gis: You are the first person I've heard that uses the word "Bloke" and didn't think highly of Bruce Dickenson. It's refreshing to find agreement on this one.

Goreripper: You hit the nail right on the head.

I know ! for some reason if you are English and into rock it translates that you must worship at the altar of Iron Maiden.
It has to be said though the even bigger disaster was Blaze Bailey !?! I remember all the rock mags used to rave about his band Wolfsbane so I ended up seeing them 3 or 4 times desperatly trying to figure out what all the fuss was about never did though.........

BRUCE DICKINSONS HIGHS ARE KILLER..BY FAR BRITISH METAL AT ITS BEST-BUT THE ORIGINAL IS BETTER MAN -KILLERS IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVS-BUT ONE CANT HAVE ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER-THIS ISN'T A DEBATE THAT WOULD JUSTIFY "WHO'S BEST" ITS YOUR PREFERENCE AT THE TIME-ITS LIKE "WHOS BETTER HAGAR OR ROTH"? I LIKE THEM BOTH-KILLER MEMEORIES FROM VAN HALENS ROTH YEARS-AND EQUALLY KILLER MEMEORIES FROM HAGAR-WHOS BEST? HMM.. MAYBE IF THEY BOTH WERE TOLD TO SING THE SAME SONG AND  RELEASE  IT AT THE SAME TIME THEN I COULD TELL YA.

Ok I must chime in here...............

I must admit I once thought that no one could sing anything from maidens first 2. But!  have any of you heard the audition version of Killers that Bruce made?  As a BIG fan of Paul I have to admit that Bruce's version of killers Blew him off the map. The range Bruce has is incredible, and I was quite shocked at how low and evil he was able to sound.

Iron Maiden is known for epic songs, and Bruce has an epic voice. The bands greatest success came with Bruce joining.

There are so many versions of Wrathchild out there that are "live" and vary in quality. But I honestly think Bruce does it better.

By the way Blaze does not even come close to either Bruce or Paul......... Thank god Bruce is back, right where he should be.

"Wrathchild, never meant to be. Wrathchild, born in poverty..."
