Subject: The 80's are SO in...

Written By: Men_At_Work_Fan on 04/06/03 at 10:15 a.m.

Does anybody else think this?

80's music is slowly growing back in style,
The shows He-Man and Transformers have been redone,
Strawberry Shortcake and the Carebears are starting to get popular again,
80's fashions!,
And a Voltron comicis soon to be released in May...
Comments?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Yeah, I sounded like Ferris Beullarbig deal!   ::)

10 years ago in 1993 when I was 17, the 70's were "SO in...."

Dazed and Confused, a film about 70's teenagers, was a very popular movie amongst us high school kids at that time in the 90's.  I think a lot us that were born in the mid-late 70's had a new found obsession with it in the 90's because we just wanted to know more about the time we were born in.  Everything comes back in style, before you know it will be 2013 and the 90's will be "SO in...."

Though I liked it a lot better when I was 17, and thinking this "retro decade" of the 70's that I was born in but can't really remember was coming back in style.  I can only vaguely remember the 70's, but lapped up the retro nostalgia in the early and mid 90's.  Ponch and Jon?  Yeah bring on those CHiPies!  Mood rings?  More of it!  Disco?  It can never be too tacky!  But when you're 27 and you remember nearly everything that is coming  back in style (for me in this case the 80's).....it's really surreal and weird.

Well, they are trying to bring back the 80's
I am but 28 so yeah I grew up in the 80's. NOW what I would not give to have my simple life back :-[
BOY I hate to say but if this pattern of things from two decades ago coming back, (like 70 stuff in the 90's, 80's stuff in the 00's) I dread the styles of the 2010's cause 90's stuff was really boring. Cars were ugly as heck, hairstyles were boring, I hate to say, but the 90's was a horrible decade. I LOVED the 80's tho!!! I guess it is all a matter of perspective. The 90's is when I did everything from graduate to being in the army to leaving home to getting married to having a kid and going BACK home and then moving and ... WHEW!!! WHAT  an unstable 10 years in my life!!! TO me,the 70's was when I was a little kid, the 80's means nostalgia, the 90's was a time of growth and trial, and THIS decade, smoothe sailing so far.
Am I the only late 20's person who misses home and being a kid and has fits of nostalgic longing? Am I the only one who would give almost anything just to be able to go out and play and not need money or a car? I guess cause i am 1100 miles from my hometown, but i really miss just being able to get up in the morning and hanging out in my favorite places just to be there.

I think we will be presently surprised.  The 90's was host to mass use of the internet, street skating/bmx, and the x-games.  And while I am not a big fan of most american main-stream 90s music, there was a great punk and ska scene produced some awesome shows and venues.

Thats true, today lots of things have an 80's inspiration! The music, with lots of electronic touches, the fashion (the hair, the clothes, legwarms!!!)... im happy with this 80's "deja vú"!

The 90's wasn't bad. I think the cars of the 90's were better looking than cars of the 80's. I just think the 90's went against everything the 80's was about. Anyways, I like music of the 80's and 90's but the music of the 00's I think must of it is horrible. Its personal opinion I guess.

I think the early 90s were still pretty cool but after about 1992 or 93 I think our culture fell off the deep end, the grunge invasion, drastic changes in fashion, and also did anyone notice the many long running TV shows from the 80s that were canceled and or had a series finale in 1992? The Cosby Show, The Golden Girls, MacGyver, Night Court, Who's The Boss, Growing Pains, Valerie's Family/The Hogan Family.

The 90s was your generation ??? I thought your generation would be now ;) It doesn't matter I guess. I'd consider the 80s my generation no matter how old I might be :) :D ;D

Btw, the early 90s ruled!

Night Court went off in 92? I thought it was like 89 or something like that. 93 was when talk shows got big(ricki lake, Geraldo, etc.) It was a shift that happened. I don't think the 90's was that bad TV wise: I still watched Step, By Step, Hangin With Mr. Cooper, Home Improvement, Family Matters, and NYPD Blue(the Jimmy Smits Years), and Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Step By Step, Fresh Prince iof Bel air, and Hangin With Mr. Cooper all went off the air around 1996-1998 period. I thought around 1997 TV started to slowly go downhill. Lasty, Nice mentioning the "Hogan Family" on the 80's list of siitcoms. Never gets mentioned that much on popular 80's sitcoms list. Also forgot "Its A Different World" went off the air in 93. Also forgot "Empty Nest" too.

Well when I see actual sitcoms return to prime-time TV, I'll be convinced.  Especially if they are family-oriented comedies.

I did happen to notice at Toys R Us yesterday that they are selling the original Transformers and HeMan figures packaged as "Classics".  The HeMan figs are even packaged in the original packaging.  Too cool.

I second that. How I wish you have lived through the entire decade!!I'm sure I would have dressed like Madonna, yet still been madly in love with The Smiths music.

''But ultimately I feel that if people are saying no to the Smiths, they're saying yes to Madonna. And I find that the biggest sin of all." Morrissey, 1985

;D But what happens if you say 'Yes' to both, eh?

I agree with Chris_MegatronTHX.......  Lately though, I've been getting a bit nostalgic about the early 90's with the music.  I'm 27 too, and  it is weird and surreal:) Trudybear---- I agree.  I wish I could go back for even just a week.  Just to have that great feeling again.  I loved the 80's!  I was sad when 1990 came.

Well, I'm with you guys on this- trudy, chris, pc

I think at lot of us in our mid-late 20s have a great perspective on the 80s because we got to see the good side of things.  I don't the 90s were that bad. I liked them and spent most of the decade going to high school and college during those years.  Obviously, with that came a lot of fun, but many more responsiblities too.

All I cared about in the late 80s was having time move faster, so I could get to high school. Then, I could meet "a lot of chicks" and get my driver's license.  When all those great John Hughes movies were released, I was still in grade school so I really wanted to grow up quickly.  Now, I look back at the late 80s and realize how innocent things were: I had a paper route, a blast in junior high, and numerous trips to the arcade. Yes, I came from the generation that saw not only the birth of home video game systems, but at the same time still went to video arcade to play my two favorite games in the world, Spy Hunter and Tron.

Enough ranting, I'm just having a nostalgic moment.
