Subject: I Love The 80's (VH1)

Written By: NitroOFR on 04/07/03 at 05:05 p.m.

Has anyone seen any of these episodes? To me They seem pretty stupid. For some reason they find it necessary to attach a sexual connotation and cynicism to almost everything they talked about. It's more like "Let's Make Fun Of The 80's". Oh well, the rare footage was cool.

I watched all of them.  They were entertaining, but I certainly wouldn't archive them on videotape or anything. I pretty much agree with your assessment and would add that most of the 'celebrity commentators' were of marginal significance to the pop culture of the decade-- or weren't even born yet.   ::)

A bunch of people gushing about how wonderful the 80's was would have been boring.  I liked these episodes.  They were enjoyable.

I  also originally thought It would be boring, but It wasn't.
"I Love The 80's" actually turned out to be a fun & entertaining 10 part special.

It's one of those specials that never got boring.
Especially with insight/comments from celebrities.

Actually everyone that was a commentator on that show was technically alive somewhere in the 80's. Though a couple of people were only being born in the mid-late 80's, like 16 year old Raven Symone.  I think people like her were brought on because they did commentate on whatever they could remember from the Late 80's, like Ninja Turtles or something like that.

I actually enjoyed these shows very much.  It was nice to see some of the fashions & fads that went along with each decade.  I also found the commentators to be pretty entertaining.

I am waiting for an "I Love the 70's" series now.  ???

I enjoyed the shows too. I don't know if you have seen the exact same ones we saw in the UK or not, though? I found some of a features a little uninteresting, but on the whole I liked it! Would watch it again I think :)

In the UK they've made I Love 70's and 90s series. The 70s didn't really interest me (only '79 b/c it was nearly the 80s :P) but I enjoyed the 90s series, although by the late 90s it felt as if there was no point in nostalgia programmes for a year which hadn't really left all that long ago!

A little off topic but...

Will there ever be a day when VH-1 Classics decides to play 90's as classics??? ??? ???  ?

Will there ever?Well, actually, they allready do. I've seen lots of 90s 'classics' on VH1 Classic - such as:

Various REM songs ( Man on the Moon, Loosing My Religion...)
Take That - Back For Good
Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satalitte
Various Oasis songs ( Don't Look Back In Anger, Wonderwall...)
Various Madonna songs (Vogue, Take A Bow...)
Nenah Cherry and Youssou N'Dour - 7 Seconds
They even played 'Around The World' by East 17 the other day!

It will happen.  If it happened to the 80's, then it will happen to the 90's.  It's already starting to happen to the early 1990's.  One day, before this decade is over probably, you'll tune into VH-1 Classic and you'll see something from 1999 on there.

In my city, one of our radio station's has a slogan---"We play the best Old School hits from the 80's and 90's!!"

Talk about making you feel really old.  The vast majority of us are still under 30, and that's the slogan they give us?

Yes, yes!!  I would love to see something like that, too!  I won't hold my breath on it, though, as it's probably not too likely to happen.  :-/

I watched all the episodes when they were orginally aired, other than 88 and 89, yeah, I'm a geek, but it's all good. :) I saw the last two years when they replayed the episodes on New Years Day.  I was actually quite surpised that I liked it so much, I thought it would turn to out to be pretty lame, but it wasn't.  I kinda wish they would have had more people commenting than what seemed like the same 5 people.  A little more diversity would have helped, but then again nothing's perfect.

I got a real kick out of them replaying some of the old public service announcements and when they had someone playing
a Mattel football game.  I used to have one of those and would play it in the car when we went on family vacations, while listening to Madonna tapes with my fresh yellow Sony Walkman, but of course.  That game really did suck a$$ looking back, but in the early 80s that was high tech. ;D

BTW, It's nice to know the Dice Man still has a gig, sort of...

I saw 1982, '84, '85, some of '87, and some of '88.  They were pretty good.  I will probably catch the rest of the episodes some time or another since VH1 does tend to repeat the same shows over and over.

I can't believe how many times they've replayed some epsiodes of Behind The Music, it's worse than a normal season of "Friends".

Or that "Living With Michael Jackson" special.  We've seen it already!  Why VH1 thinks everyone wants to see that interview an umpteen number of times is beyond me.

<---------- Can't wait until I love the 90's comes out.

I like seeing all the 80's stuff but probably A show called I Love The 90's would be better.

This is probably what they will be talking about
1990- Bart Simpson T-Shirts
1991- Nirvana's Debut
1992- Grunge
1994- Kurt Cobain's Death
1999- Poke'mon

2020 would be way too late.  Sometime around 2008 to 2012 is the right time for "I Love the 90's", and 90's nostalgia.  That matches up with around the time the 80's nostalgia started and 70's nostalgia started.  It always begins sooner then you expect, roughly 9 years after retro decade in question ended, and 18 years since it started.

And sometime around 2018 to 2022 would be an "I Love the 00's"

Hello! Doesn't anyone listen to what I've written :(

I've allready said that 'I Love 90s' has been broadcast in the UK, in late 2001 if I'm correct.

I'll second that Criz ! I saw all three series and enjoyed them all.The 'I Love The 70's' was great as it had loads of the toys and sweets I remember from being a kid.In the U.K they showed the year and then one of the top films that came out that year straight after.

It wouldn't possibly be called that, because the 80's already took that...  It'd probably be something like "90's Jam" or something else really weird...

I kinda figured the 90's ended in 1999 and ten years later you'd figure 20 years from 99' would be 2019.

I am actually watching these as I am typing. I turned it on when they were doing 1983 and now they are up to 1986. They are pretty interesting. It deffinately brings back a lot of memories. I find myself saying, "Oh, I forgot about that."

I know.Really. If they didn't like the 80's fine. Then shut up and talk about something else. But don't make fun of something just because you don't like it.
