Maybe it's just me but when Vince Clarke abandoned Yaz in favor of Erasure, it seems like he tried to find a guy that sounded like Alison. Has anyone else noticed this?

Huh? She didn't sing one of her biggest hits???? Her version of "Love Resurrection" is good, but Kim Boyce's is better.

Oh yeah!  The first time I heard Erasure I thought it was Yazoo, or at least Allison Moyet!

I absolutely adore Alison Moyet! She has one of the greatest, most beautiful voices in pop music history. Her torch song "Invisible" is on my list of greatest songs of the 80s, along with the magnificent "Love Resurrection". I'm happy that you were able to see her in concert, Gis. I've heard that she still sounds and looks great these days! :)

I heard somewhere that her laugh from the song Love Resurrection is the most-sampled of all time.

Yeah, but Vince Clarke also left Depeche Mode in 1981 because, apparently, he didn't want to do electronic music anymore. He's since gone on to form not one, but TWO electronic bands since. And Erasure sounds a lot like early Depeche Mode, don't you think?

He's an indecisive man...:)

5 electronic bands if you count The Assembly, Marlowe, and collaborations with Martin Ware of Heaven 17.

Yes. All very good. Try getting the album "The Peter Pan Project" by Marlowe. It's got a few good songs like "Calling All Destroyers" and "The Picture Of Dorian Gray."

I'll see what I can find. :)

I just find it funny that someone who apparently wanted to do something different, would spend the next 20-something years doing exactly the same thing he did at the beginning with Depeche Mode.

Just think what they would have sounded like if Vince were still in the band. <shudder>

I wouldn't knock it. Vince Clarke is still good, but he does play second fiddle to Martin L. Gore's mastery in the craft of song-writing.

Musicwise, NewOrder sounds better than Depeche Mode. Lyrically, The Smiths could have them beat. Vocals are better in Roxy Music and Japan, but it's the sheer consistency of great output and the combination of all these qualities (though not as good as the bands mentioned) that puts Depeche Mode ahead of all these bands.

Agreed. I'm afraid that if Vince were still in Depeche Mode, we might be seeing more songs like "Boys Say Go" and "Photographic." That is, if Depeche Mode were even still together by now.

Definitely. Martin's a great songwriter, but...no one beats Morrissey.

It depends who's singing in Depeche Mode. Martin's voice is just beautiful, and I think surpasses that of Bryan Ferry or David Sylvian. They're close, but they don't get to me right here <pointing to heart> like Martin's voice does.

Yes. Depeche Mode have remained fresh and unique over the years, and have stayed together despite the obvious problems that have gotten in their way. Absolutey commendable.

(I apologise for all this. Maybe I should start a different thread as this was supposed to have been about Alison Moyet and things have appeared to go off-topic just slightly.) :D
