Subject: FAVORITE 80's One Hit Wonder

Written By: KtelChick on 04/11/03 at 02:17 p.m.

This is an obscure one...but it always brings a smile to my face when I hear it:

"This Beat Goes On--Switchin' to Glide"  by the Kings

What's your favorite "One Hit Wonder" of the era?

Good song, Howard!  :D

Oh man, I can't believe no one has mentioned 'Big Country' with title song 'In a Big Country.'  Stuart Adamson's voice drove me wild, as did all the nods towards Scottish music.

God rest his soul.  The poor man committed suicide last year, and after a really promising start in Nashville.  I still have the album he did with Marcus Hummon (I think that is his name)...it's called "Supernatural" (The Raphaels).

I guess its a function of this being an international site but several of the bands mentioned are not 'one hit wonders' here in the U.K.

Dexy's Midnight Runners may only have had C'mon Eileen as a number 1 but they had several others in the charts.  Many people remember  'Jacky Wilson Said' on Top of the Pops where the big screen had a picture of Jocky Wilson (a dart player) instead.

A-Ha probably two or three other songs in the charts after Take On Me.  Didn't they do a Bond theme?

The Nolans had lots of songs in the charts here but probably more in the late 70s I think.

I think I would have to go for Love and Pride by King (although I've a suspicion that they did one or two other records)

Right you are karen!  I failed to make that a stipulation.

From what I understand Big Country had quite a few hits in the UK...and I never understood why MTV insists they are a one hit wonder...they had at least one other hit after 'In a Big Country'..."Wonderland" is by far my favorite out of ALL their songs.

Murray Head's "One Night In Bangkok" is the best 80's song period.

I'm also tossing in

"Major Tom" Peter Shilling

which was something of an homage to David Bowie's original
"Major Tom"....have no idea what Bowie fans think of Shilling's piece...I myself love it..., but also like the original.  Just heard it yesterday as a matter of fact.  Decided I most definitely prefer Bowie's earlier stuff.  His 80s stuff rubbed me the wrong way, for some reason.

I think The Sun Always Shines On TV charted here, and I know they did indeed do a Bond theme, the one for The Living Daylights.
Favorite one hit wonder:
The Fanatic by Felony
Just my 2 cents worth.  :)
