Subject: Morbid Compilation

Written By: Eric Schadenfreude on 04/13/03 at 05:08 p.m.

I am doing something incredibly morbid.  I'm making a CD of songs in which the artist is no longer with us.  I know there are dozens of dead 80's artists, but I can only come up with a few.

Falco
Wendy O Williams
Mel and Kim (one of them anyway)

I'd like to keep it top 40'ish.

Joy Division stopped playing when Ian Curtis died.  I actually found this:

Before Curtis' death, the band had agreed that Joy Division would cease to exist if any member left, for any reason

Love Will Tear Us Apart reached 13 on the British Singles Chart

The guy who did Tarzan Boy died of aids I think -- what was his name?  Baltimora or something like that?

Not sure if you're only going for solo artists, or bands where they stopped performing after a member died.  Steve Clark from Def Leppard comes to mind (I still remember my best friend calling me at work to tell me), but of course Def Leppard kept going after he died.  Also, don't forget Freddy Mercury.

No. He's still around.

How about Loverboy and The Cars? Both had members die. The Cars, especially. Every time I hear "Drive," his death only adds to the sad feeling the song gives.

You should also include Mike And The Mechanics, Naked Eyes, The Waitresses, and Milli Vanilli. The Lords Of The New Church are not Top 40, but they also had some really good songs. Try listening to "Dance With Me." It's a great tune and it's a shame he (Stiv Bator) died under such Strange circumstances.

I'm sorry. I meant another  Paul Young.

Also, for the compilation guy, you should also try Cutting Crew and Big Country.

Keith Green and Van Stephenson. There's a wealth of info at a site called The Dead Rock Stars Club. They have info on every dead person even remotely connected to the music world.

Please don't forget Stuart Adamson, who started out with the Punk Rock group 'The Skids' and went on to lead 'Big Country.'

From what I understand, he had left the UK to come to the States to begin a career in country music, wanting to re-establish ties between old Scottish music and modern C&W, as well as capitalize on the crossovers that were taking place (think Dixie Chicks, Brooks & Dunn etc).

Unfortunately, the man was also battling alcoholism, and the alcoholism won.  He committed suicide in Hawaii not too long ago...I want to say last year in the early part of 2002, but I could be wrong.

anyway, the world has lost a REALLY REALLY good voice.

I'm trying to think of the name of someone who died quite recently, like last year maybe.  She died whilst swimming in the sea.  I think a water skier or something hit her.  Just can't remember the singers name.  I know the guy involved was fined some pitiful amount recently like about £26.

Jermaine Stewart, who did "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" died in the late 1990s.

Jam Master Jay from Run DMC, Freddie Mercury, George Harrison,I think you could use some of Bob Marley's songs too, I think those will help, all very tragic losses though. :'(
