Ever noticed how pretty much every single car in the world during the 80's was completley square?

LOL..one thing I loved as a kid was cars..and the 80s certainly were boxy! Kinda odd how the designs of the 70's cars (especially early 70s muscle cars) were more aerodynamically efficient..but did everything the could to make gas milage horrible (except for 73 and 79 obviously). We had a 1978 Buick Regal growing up for a long time..while a 78, it was basically the start of the 80s design (the 77s were the last of the 2nd gen body Regals). It was a big box! It's funny how we usually don't think of cars as much as we do music, hair, fashion..as era markers. But now that we are in the 2000s..we can defintely tell an 80s era car..whether on a street or in a photo of that time..and just how OLD they are starting to look!

Yeah... I had a Chevette.  My friends used to refer to it as "the refrigerator on roller-skates".  I hated looking like I moonlighted for the U.S. Postal Service.   ::)

Yeah people noticed it back then too, and quite a few people would poke fun at it.  Film critic Roger Ebert often remarked on how he grew up in the 50's and 60's thinking "the future" would have really cool looking rocket like cars.  But he was dissapointed that the 1980's turned out mostly box looking cars.

I have no explanation for that trend.  There were plenty of cool looking cars around, especially the supercars, so I don't know why the car industry mass produced those box cars.

I drive an '88 Nissan Pulsar...I love the square corners on cars...not like the rounded things out now..they look like capsules...

The title of this thread reminded me of the movie "Crazy People" when Dudley Moore was put into the psych ward because he was truthful in his advertising slogans...one of my faves was "Volvo. They're boxy but they're good."

Who wants to be a fire engine? LMAO!!

Probably cheaper to make.  By the way, ever see a pic of the Honda Insight hybrid car?  Notice the covered wheels in the back?  You can make fun of them now, but you better get used to them.  Cars are getting so aerodynamic that the wheel wells are causing the most drag.
