Written By: Arcfire on 05/03/03 at 11:10 p.m.

Soooo.. Anyone here have any fav. songs that told a story? For instance a couple that come to mind are:

Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun
Aerosmith - Jamie's got a gun

I have a headache  :-[ and cannot remember anymore at this time but I am sure you all can! ;D

Gordon Lightfoot's "Ballad of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is about the only song that I like to listen to that tells a story.  Also about the lady who is sure that all that glistens is gold and she's buying the "Stairway to Heaven.."  ;D

Aww nutz.  Those were 70's songs.  How about U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday" ?

Any Paul Kelly songs.  I LOVE story songs (especially sad story songs - like any Harry Chapin songs).  Any Aussie's out there Paul Kelly fans?  I got his greatest hits cd for my birthday last year and listen to it constantly.

Human League's "Don't You Want Me" (not only a story, but a dialogue between the story's principle actors).

Also John Cougar's "Jack and Diane."

(Are these too obvious?)

I forgot an absolutely critical 80s song-that-tells-a-story: "Captain Howdy/Street Justice" by Twisted Sister!

I always liked that one too.  Its one of the only songs that so haunts me it makes me shiver when I hear it.

Another good one Id consider is "Man on the Silver Mountain" by Rainbow--"...SOME ONE MAKE ME HOLY AGAIN!!!!"

But for the 80s Ill go for about any of the Men At Work's hits:  Down Under, Who Can It Be Now?, Be Good Johnny....

Don't know of any 80's songs that told a story that I like. But I can only think of The Band's "The Weight", don't really understand what the story is though.  ???

My favourite story-song would probably have to be "Blasphemous Rumours" by Depeche Mode, especially for the chorus:

"I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing"

...A song which tells that even the most God-fearing of people can end up with a terrible fate (in this case, getting hit by a car and eventually dying), when earlier in life, that same person, not having found religion yet, attempted suicide and lived to tell the tale.

i know it's not 80's, but when i was little my dad used to sing jimmy dean's "big bad john" to me.  i used to get so upset because i wanted to know why he wasn't called "big good john" if he saved all those people.

I can NOT believe that I would forget my most obvious choice for a favourite storytelling song! It's also by one of my most favourite bands after all!!!!  :o

"Suffer Little Children" by The Smiths!!!!!!!!!!! A beautifully written song about the murder of three children in the 1960's. A true story.

OK, this relegates "Blasphemous Rumours" to a very close second. :)

"Telegraph Road" by Dire Straits and "O'Malley's Bar" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, although that's a 90s tune.  ;)

:PURL
Remember "Ode to Billy Jack"?  the part, "one tin soldier rides away"... we used to sing it at camp, and at that part, all the kids sitting at their tables in the cafeteria would lift their tables up and crash them down in unison, like hoofbeats!  There were about 400 kids, 10 to a table, it was fun.

Okay, shoot me if you will and I know it's pure corn, but...

Jim Stafford - My Girl Bill

...a fair-to-middling transatlantic hit in 1974, it's one of those songs that you're obliged to get to the end of..! Extremely clever use of lyric! Go find a search engine if you're not sure what I'm on about! (Does anyone?!)

This one tops it off for me: "The Day Before You Came" by ABBA

Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle"

These kind of tell a story:

Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)"
The Guess Who's "These Eyes"

The whole Full Moon album was good PoP  ;D but I bought it for "In America".  Yes I went through a southern rock stage, I listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Oakridge boys (remember elvira?) Ozark mountain daredevils and the Outlaws did an excellent cover of Ghost riders, and many other groups.
