Subject: ADAM ANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Written By: Rio_Rhodes on 05/14/03 at 11:13 a.m.

I just felt like starting a thread about Ads :-*.  I haven't seen one anywhere else here so I decided it was time for Adam to get some discussion time. I really just want to talk about all of his work with the Ants, mostly the early 80s stuff, anything you want to say that won't be about what is going on today with him, unless its the good stuff. No bad news, poor guy. I just want to see people show him some love. So, first I wanna say, as if I haven't before, I LOVE the Stand and Deliver video!!!!! Lets start with that and go from there! What was anyones favorite thing about his videos?

Hi Rio...

Yes, he's had a bit of bad publicity of late - but, in all fairness, (although many of the highbrow critics at the time treated him as a bit of a joke) he was first and foremost an entertainer...

Remember that "Stand And Deliver" video well (with all its state-of-the-art camera trickery!) If memory serves, the record blasted its way to #1 over here mainly on the strength of it...with a little help from a canny record company publicity overdrive, of course...

That year, 1981, was really his peak - it would have taken something else to maintain the blanket success he achieved in just that year alone...therefore, everything else after was eyed with some suspicion and mockery...plus, it didn't really help matters that other artists/groups with similar strong images were starting to appear...

Certainly an original...

All the best!

ditto

And "Dog Eat Dog" from a compilation CD I have.

"Goody Two Shoes" is the only video from Adam Ant I'm familiar with. It's a good clip though.

People might not realise now how VAST a star Adam was in the UK at that time. I was writing for a magazine called Flexipop! which had one issue with a free Adam flexidisc (called 'A.N.T.S' - his version of YMCA!) - and the magazine totally sold-out - something that is almost unheard of.

Although he was only at the top for quite a short while (maybe 12 to 18 months?), during that time he was unquestionably the biggest pop star in Britain. Even though other big stars came along later (Duran, Boy George, George Michael and so on), I realy don't think any of them managed to generate the real mania that Adam did.

Adam sure was a trip! I remember seeing him for the first time on Solid Gold, wearing his bucaneer outfit and makeup! He had some infectious hits (the aforementioned "Goody Two Shoes" plus my faves "Strip" and "Viva Le Rock"). I also recall my sister having a massive crush on him... she had a humongous poster of him on her wall (which she probably used to make-out with!  ::) )

Huw,
You never got to meet Adam did you? I remember reading one of his interviews where he talked about Flexipop!. I was just curious if you did meet him or not. Did anyone else meet him? If you did, prepare to become my new best friend!!!

Adam took me for a very nice lunch once in Odettes Restaurant in Primrose Hill once. I did an interview over lunch (not for Flexipop! but, I cringe to admit it, for the girls' magazine, Jackie....)

We must have spent about 2 hours or so over lunch That was the only time I met Adam. He struck me as a very nice, friendly, intelligent person (not all pop stars are...  :D ).

I must see if I can find that interview somewhere. I've lost quite a few of the interviews I did over the years, unfortunately, but I still have a filing cabinet full of old magazines, old carbon copies (I didn't even have a PC then) and even some longhand notes, so maybe it's still in there somewhere....

I would LOVE to read that if you ever found the interview.I would love to meet Adam someday. That must have been so great to meet all of those pop stars, the stars who actually meant something to people, not like today. Who else did you meet?

My brother was a big Adam and the Ants fan.  I remember him driving my mum mad (and breaking one of her knitting needles) practising the drumming to Ant Music.

I can also remember a school trip where some girls were trying to sing Ant Music but kept starting at the chorus.  Drove me and a mate mad.  Now I'm not normally an exhibitionist (honest!) but it forced me into standing up on the bus with said friend and doing the whole song from start to finish.  Merely got accused of showing off  ::)

Which video was Diana Dors in?  Was it Prince Charming?

I've just checked and I still have an old carbon copy of that interview. I'm a bit busy to get it online at the moment (though I do have a short q&a with Adam on my site). However, just to whet your appetite, here are a few quotes from the interview that haven't been seen for about 20 years (gulp!):

Adam: "With the benefit of hindsight I'd have to admit that i did go from the warrior look to the highwayman to Prince Charming much too fast... I'm going to take more time in future."

Adam: "I think men should use makeup to enhance their features."

Adam: (on other people's pop videos) "I'm not impressed. Lots of them have no imagination. They just have cars, beaches and girls."

Adam: "I'll never grow sick of pop music. It's so exciting to me. I couldn't get away from music even if I wanted to."

Anyway, I'll put the whole thing on line one day. I'll let you know when.

btw, the video with Diana Dors was Prince Charming. She played the fairy godmother!

At the risk of straying off topic  ;) , yes, I interviewed them at the time of Rio (just before the album was released, I believe - as far as I can recall, I think 'Hungry Like The Wolf' was the current single?). They were all pretty down-to-earth, in spite of the elaborate outfits and makeup! As I mention on my site, the thing that amused me was that, when I stayed to watch part of a photo shoot, every time the photographer pointed the camera at them they would all, without even thinking, suck in their cheeks! Actually, they knew they were doing it. Nick Rhodes cracked a joke about it, which is why I particularly remember that.

I did most of the interview with Simon le Bon. He was really a very good interview subject. One of the people I remember with most fondness, actually (some pop stars can be a real pain in the ....well, you know). He kept me talking for ages. Every time I said, "Well, I must be off now," he'd say, "No, don't go. I'm enjoying this. Let's talk some more." I don't know if he really was enjoying it or not, but anyhow we did a very long interview. He asked me to keep some of the most interesting things "off record", which I did even though it's very, very hard as a journo, not to print all your best quotes! It was a shame the interview had to be cut down to about 800 words or so to fit the slot I had in the magazine (a short-lived mag called 'Kicks'). It's hard to think that was so long ago. It doesn't seem it....

By coincidence, I've just found another interview I did (well, actually it was all done over that same lunch hour - but sold to two different magazines  :) ) - and it's all about Strip! Adam tells me that the complete video was shown in America but not in the UK. Apparently, back in those days, we Brits weren't thought to be grown up enough to cope with it  ;D ! This was at around the same time that the Frankie Goes To Hollywood single, 'Relax', was banned by the BBC. How easily people were shocked in those days! Anyway, that looks like I now have two Adam interviews all ready to go online...

I've never seen that video. Was it really all that shocking?

I've just been reading over my interview with Adam and he says this about the stage show: "I ended up getting into a tank of water on stage. I did a sort of strip tease ending up wearing nothing but leg warmers and shorts. Then I'd throw away the leg warmers."
The I ask: "And the shorts?"
and Adam says: "Oh no, I can assure you it was all done in the best possible taste!"

Was all this on the video too or was that just the stage show? Did anyone here actually see Adam's Strip tour?

I unfortunately was not able to see the Strip tour mainly because I wasn't born yet. >:(. But I can tell you that the video was not very risque at all. Throughout the video everyone is clothed. At the end of the video, there is a scene where Adam's clothes come off and he is in a pair of shorts and either his boots or legwarmers, I can't really tell. That is about as much stripping there is in the video. Like Adam said, it was all in the best possible taste.Excuse me while I go and watch the video again!!! :-*

Thanks for the kind words!

You might be interested to know that Adam has recently filmed a documentary for Channel 4 TV in the UK. Apparently this will look at Adam's career and Adam will also talk about his recent problems and the depression that he suffers from.

The documentary should be aired (on UK TV, not sure about elsewhere) in the next week or two.

Ahem.......I did not just see the word cheezy being used to refer to Adam did I :o? Maybe to a guy it is cheesy but it is definetely NOT cheezy to many females!!!! I will forgive and forget if you can manage to say at least one nicething about Adam, Mr. 80s Trivia. If not, I'll have to have someone force you to watch Strip a thousand times over and overuntil you dolike the video.Just kidding. But it wouldn't hurt to say something nice about Adam would it? At least that he is a good musician? If not, oh well. You're just a guy. ;) ;)

Now, as I've said, this is one video I haven't seen. However, I've seen most of Adam's others such as Stand and Deliver and Prince Charming. I must say I thought those were great videos. One of the things I really liked about Adam was his self-deprecating sense of humour. I mean, even when he was the biuggest star in the UK, he was constantly sending himself up.

I'm not sure if this kind of humour travels all that well outside of the UK. It sometimes seems that we even take US sendups to our hearts better than the US folks do. For example, the Arnold Schwarzenneger film 'Last Action Hero' - in which Arnie essentially made fun of his usual screen persona - apparently bombed in the USA but did great business here in the UK. I have to say it is one of my personal favourite Arnie films.

I can certainly see how Adam's videos might seem a bit on the cheesy side if you assume he's taking all that stuff seriously. I'm pretty sure though that Adam's tongue was pretty firmly planted in his cheek throughout most of his career.

Out of interest, did Adam ever have any real success in America? As far as I can remember, he never really made the breakthrough into the USA pop market even at the time when he was absolutely massive over here.

I would say that Adam had success here in the States. I recall that my older sister rushed out and bought Adam & the Ants debut album on vinyl, which she still has in her collection. "Goody Two Shoes" was most definitely his break-out hit in the US, however. It was a huge hit then and still gets fair amount of airplay today on retro stations. The video was in heavy rotation on MTV... back when they played music videos 24/7. After that, I believe "Strip" would have been his second biggest hit Stateside. I believe that "Desperate But Not Serious" and "Vive Le Rock" charted as well, but weren't massive hits here. But Adam certainly left an impression, as he had his own personal sense of style and performing! :)

I was just wondering if anyone knew how to find any of the movies that Adam made. I'm pretty sure I could only find them on VHS. I checked on Ebay and so far all I have found is from the UK, and everything is formatted differently there than in the states, which makes me slightly upset. :-/. So if anyone knows how I could get ahold of them, especially Love Bites, PLEASE let me know. Thanks much!
