Subject: Music: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly...

Written By: Criz on 05/19/03 at 02:52 p.m.

...ratings for 80s artists. The categories are as above - 'ugly' kinda just means you can't bear them, whereas 'bad' is just that you don't like the person/band. You just have to sort out the list of music artists into the 3 sections :)

The Police
The Jam
The Smiths
The Clash
Madonna
Go Go's
Elvis Costello
Bangles
Michael Jackson
Yaz/Yazoo
New Order
Depeche Mode
Japan
Duran Duran
Visage
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Ultravox
The Cars
Squeeze
Adam and the Ants
Human League
Soft Cell
Spandau Ballet
Kim Wilde
Kylie Minogue
Wham!
OMD
Pet Shop Boys
Bananarama
Bruce Springstien
Journey
Bon Jovi
REO Speedwagon
Irene Cara
The Cure
Berlin
U2
Nik Kershaw
Guns n Roses
Blondie
Howard Jones
Men At Work
Haircut 100
Joe Jackson
Cindy Lauper
Billy Idol
Whitesnake
Whitney Houston
Simple Minds

... that will do for now, I'll sort mine out later :)

This is pretty tough as you haven’t given us the opt-out option of “Just OK”. So I’ve had to go with anything that got a gut reaction of “not good” rates as “bad”.

Bearing that in mind, I’d go with the following:

GOOD
The Jam
The Smiths
The Clash
The Best! In fact, GREAT!
Bangles
one of the best gigs I ever went to - Mid Hudson Civic Centre, Poughkeepsie, NY - February 1989
New Order
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Squeeze
Human League
Soft Cell
if only ‘cos it gives me the opportunity to tell you all that I went to school with Marc Almond….
Wham!
OMD
Bruce Springsteen
The Cure
U2
Guns n Roses
Blondie
Howard Jones
only just squeezing in to this list, based on “What Is Love?” being the soundtrack to my teenage heartbreak
Haircut 100
Joe Jackson

BAD
The Police
Madonna
Go Go's
Elvis Costello
Michael Jackson
Yaz/Yazoo
this is actually two different bands – actually one person and one duo. Both bad!
Depeche Mode
Japan
Duran Duran
sorry Hairspray, Durania et al….they were OK.
Visage
Ultravox
The Cars
Adam and the Ants
Spandau Ballet
Kim Wilde
Kylie Minogue
Pet Shop Boys
Bananarama
Nik Kershaw
Men At Work
Cindy Lauper
Whitney Houston
Simple Minds

UGLY

Journey
Bon Jovi
REO Speedwagon
Irene Cara
Berlin
Billy Idol
Whitesnake

What may look like an anti-US bias here in the "UGLY" section is really a reflection of my distaste for....well, American pomp-rock really! Billy Idol and Whitesnake - you bring shame on the British nation!

That was where I saw Blue Oyster Cult (years before). I'm sure that concert was soooo much better than the one I saw. If you are from that area, let me guess, you listen (or listened) to WPDH  ;D

Yaz and Yazoo are the same band.Yaz was the name they used for the American market. You are thinking of the solo singer Yazz.

Cat, I'm English but I was in Poughkeepsie for 6 months in 1989 working on a residency for an IT company locally. Happy memories - I had a great time! I don't remember WPDH, was it still broadcasting in 1989? I recall listening to WPSK...

I was living in that area around 1978-82 and listened to WPDH. I have a friend who used to live in Poughkeepsie until just last Oct. and she was still listening to WPDH. So, since you were only there for 6 months, I understand why you didn't find WPDH. It was (and I assume still), a good station.
