Subject: Remember Night Flight on USA network?

Written By: mhfanclub on 05/20/03 at 05:43 a.m.

Does anybody here remember Night Flight? It was on USA network in the early 80's. they used to show all kinds of weird videos and shorts. And they had great punk videos. I liked New Wave Theatre with Peter Ivers. I hope I'm not the only one that remembers this show. I found a couple Night Flight web sites to refresh everyone's memory.

I used to LOVE watching "Night Flight".  That is where I first heard The Smiths when they played the "How Soon Is Now" video.  I used to tape alot of episodes and invite friends over & we would watch them over & over.  I remember seeing Paul Hardcastles "19" vid as well.  And Bronski Beat/Communards vids.  Man, I wish I still had my "Beta-Max" tapes of those shows!  (Beta-Max haha!! remember those?)

If my memory serves me correct I used to watch "Friday Night Videos" on Fridays (of course) and I think "Night Flight" came on Saturday nights?

I remember that show too! I think it was the first place I ever saw Fish Heads by Barnes and Barnes!

Yes Night Flight was one of my all time fave shows (and I kinda took it for granted in the 80s..)  Now that its long gone I really miss it.  FORTUNATELY, I made some tapes of my fave episodes back in the 80s and I still have them!  One of my faves was when they showed the movie "URGH a Music War"  which had live performances from the Police, Go-Gos, Oingo Boingo, Cramps, Wall of Voodoo, Joan Jett, Gary Numan and more...great movie.

Didn't WTBS also have a similar type show called Night Tracks?

Yes they did.  But Night Tracks only showed music videos.  Night Flight was way better..not only showing more obscure videos, but also specials, live shows, series, cult movies clips and other fun stuff..

Yeah! I remember Night Flight vaguely. I used to catch re-runs of it on KDOC/channel 56 here in LA. Street Fighter was the best! Badly dubbed Chinese snippets from martial arts flix. They also had animation shorts, plus all the rad vids and interviews. That's where I saw most of the bands I like now.

That is a great movie!  I recently bought a copy of that and "History of Rock 'n Roll Vol. 9 - PUNK"! Does anyone else remember "The Decline of Western Civilization" and, "The Great Rock 'n Roll Swindle" punk music documentaries?  :D

Maybe someone should start a topic on Music Documentaries in the 80's, because there were soooo many great ones!  8)

I have a memory of seeing the Vapors do "Turning Japanese" on TV, probably in '79.  Anyone remember if that could have been on Night Flight (Tracks)???

Ohmigod, I LOVED Night Flight!  I have so many great memories of coming home on a Saturday night and staying up to watch this awesome, cutting edge show (and then they re-played it a few hours later.....talk about staying up 'till the wee-hours of the night!!!!).

Back then regular music videos were considered cutting-edge, but Night Flight had so many additional cool things to watch.  I remember so many great "theme" shows....I think my favorite was the "Atomic Cafe" show, where they played a lot of old cold-war propaganda films, and cool videos that had the same theme.  Just awesome!  Thanks for the memory!
