Subject: Worst Hairband?

Written By: FloydsGarage on 05/24/03 at 04:18 p.m.

Hands down my vote goes to Warrant. They were nothing more than a third rate Poison rip-off band.

Cherry Pie may very well be the worst song ever recorded in history.

Their paint by numbers song writing and cheesy lyrics was one of the last nails in the coffin that killed 80's rock.

Sorry to all the Warrant fans out there. But I couldn't stand them.

Yeah, Warrant was pretty bad.  But Winger was even worse!  Talk about ultimate cheese-rock.  :P

Behold the power of cheese...

Aww, c'mon!! Are there really any bad hair bands??!!

I think not!!

(Ok, I didn't mean bands with bad hair, cuz a lot of them had really bad hair, but hair bands that were bad...I mean, whenever I see a piece of cherry pie I gotta start screamin' "Sheeeee's my cherry PIE!!!!!!" and then my wife gives me that "I'm gonna come at you with a meat-cleaver if you don't shut up!" look...and then...oh, nevermind. No. No bad hair bands.)

Winger was bad too, but his only saving grace was that he played bass for Alice Cooper for two albums (Raise your Fist and Yell and Constrictor).

And how the hell did I forget White Lion?

When me and twenty stoned out buddies came over to my apartment for Saturday's Headbanger's Ball, nothing was more vile than to play 'When the Children Cry" right after Megadeth.

Crue is horrible insipid crap. Bon Jovi were well on their way to crapdom until I bought These Days. That album made me appreciate some of their other music which I had previously discarded as mere Fluff Wrock. They can play outside of their form and manage to sound different and appealing. Motley Crue is Cheez Meatal through and through. They played crap from the beginning and never changed the formula.

Motley Crue and Guns n Roses had the potential to be the greatest rock groups in history.

Motley Crue - Too Fast for Love and SHout at the Devil ruled. Unfortunately the Crue's main songwriter Nikki got into heroin and started writing crap. I'll never forget when their image changed from Shout at the Devil Mad Max to Theater of Pain lace. The music was pop and I was in total disarray. The Crue were my favorite band until Theatre of Pain, then I went to W.A.S.P. who were hot on their Last Command Tour.

Guns n Roses - Geez Appetite for Destruction was a godsend. When that album came out it kicked the whole world right in the butt. You couldn't cruise with the dudes, go to a party, or get laid with out Appetite playing. Well ego sets in and too many lineup changes and the whole beautiful GnR experience went to hell. We've been promised a new Guns  n Roses with Buckethead, but the "Chinese Democracy" album may never see the light of day.

However I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Motley Crue's "New Tattoo". This album brings the Crue back from the Generation Swine wasteland they were lost in. New Tattoo has some great songwriting, Vince sounds great and it features some of Mick's best guitar playing ever. The lat, great Randy Castillo brought a kick in the drumming approach that the Crue needed over Tommy's laziness.

Hear me people, New Tattoo rocks.........

From the song 'First Band on the Moon'

I wanna a place with arena rock

Oh yeah and RATT kicked too. Warran Demartini was a very talented but under appreciated guitar slinger.

Out of the Cellar is a worthy testament to 80's rock at it's best.

I totally agree.  Motley Crue was great back then!  "Shout at the Devil" is one of my all time favorite albums from the 80's.  In fact, I just dl'ed the "Too Young to Fall in Love" video off of Kazaa & DAM!  Tommy Lee was ~hot~ back then!  Too bad the drugs finally took their toll & now he looks like a bag of crap.

As for GnR, they had some very good potential, but once again....drugs took over.  And now it seems that Scott Weiland was about to fill Axl's shoes as frontman for "The Project" (which consists of the remaining GnR's), but noooo, he had to go get arrested for bagging some crack two weeks ago.  What is it with these people?  >:(

You know some of the bands mentioned are actually great musicians like Winger, and White Lion unlike some people I actually listen to the music. Check out bands like Autograph, Nitro, TNT, Dokken, Europe, Racer X, Vinnie Vincent Invasion, and Yngwie Malmsteen. I think the problem is that most people only acknowledge the hits that some of these bands had and as a result they don't hear the full spectrum of the band. I t was entertainment, do you think these guys went grocery shopping wearing makeup, leather pants, and their hair teased up? The worst "Hair" band in terms of musicianship to me is Poison.

Just finished reading a book called Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal which tells the story of the 80s LA glam and sleaze scene. What a great read. I'd recommend it to you all. Winger was undoubtedly one of the lamest bands of all. 'Cherry Pie' ruined Warrant. They had a ton of songs way better than that. Saw Mike Tramp play recently doing a set of White Lion songs and I finally understand why people compared them to Van Halen. Fantastic songs! Warren Dimartini is now in Dio. Motley Crue's self-titled album is brilliant. I'm going to an 80s metal night at a club here on Friday to immerse myself in puerile rock n roll! Yay!

I guess the problem is with bigger bands like those mentioned is it all comes down to personal taste again.I would have to say some of the worst hair bands I ever saw were some of the smaller ones who maybe only had one album out or an EP,however I did think Winger were awful live and on vinyl but other people loved them obviously otherwise they wouldn't have got where they did !

The irony of Winger is that they really were excellent musicians and songwriters, but for some reason they just seemed to suck. Some of them went on to write television and film scores.

My choice for wost hairband would have to be Stryper.  The only nice thing I can say about them is they at least were honest about being a Christian metal band, unlike Creed.

Creed is not necessarily Christian in nature. Consider, in one of their first singles, "What's this life for", the use of the words "G*d d*mn...".

Then in what way ARE they Christian?  Because when I unfortunatley had to see them open for a band I wanted to see a few years ago, the lead singer (with the bad mullet) was quoting stuff from the Bible on stage. ::)

And what is it with him always blowing in the wind in all Creeds videos and in concert? He must carry around a big ass fan with him everywhere ???

Well, Scott Stapp's father is a preacher so I suppose his upbringing was strictly Christian, and that continues to have a lot of influence on his writing. Most of Creed's songs are very spiritual in nature. I guess they could be percieved as Christian, I just don't pidgeon-hole them into that category.

As for the big ass fan, I dunno. Maybe he likes Chicago or somthing...

BTW, quoting from the bible does not make one Christian. The devil  has done so on many occasions...

I can't talk about the metal bands you guys are talking about(I don't know much about Slayer or Winger) but this could be because I come from Britain but if anybody has heard of Kajagoogoo's lead singer Limahl, he had an amazing mullet!

Also if anyone has ever heard of Flock of Seagulls, the lead singer had the most absurd slanted hairstyle I have ever seen (and well done to him for attempting it).

Last but not least. Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Very reminiscent of Twisted Sister.

No offense, but I'm going to have to disagree with you there.

Sputnik is one of my favorite all-time bands.  Tony James was in Gen X with Billy Idol in the 70s before starting Sputnik a few years later.  My favorite songs by them are Atari Baby and Dancerama.  IMO, I don't think they could even be labeled as a Hair Band, or any category for that matter, they were too different from so many bands, especially Twisted Sister.  The best thing about them though is that they had two drummers!  How cool is that?!

I never listened to a lot of Hair Bands in the 80s, although I did think Nelson was pretty bad...

I can't agree totally with that even though I respect your opinion.  :) Both bands had an explicit flamboyancy about them - the lead singer from Sputnik wore ripped tights over his face at one point (I am aware that Twisted Sister hadn't tried that).

Showaddywaddy of the 70s also had double drummers as well.
