Subject: Bloom County

Written By: FloydsGarage on 05/29/03 at 01:30 a.m.

I owe Berekly Breathed so much. First of all I shoplifted a copy of every Bloom County book. Hey I was an angry young teen and shoplifting was my (stupid) way of lashing out.

Bloom County was the greatest comic strip ever, it was over the top 80's.

I can remember sitting in my apartment reading my Bloom County books when life was so bad and I just wanted to die. Opus and the gang made life worth living when my girlfriend and everything else was making my life a living hell. It seems so weird that a comic strip could mean so much to someone.

So to Mr. Breathe, wherever you are. Thank you for all the laughs, smiles, and chuckles.

DEATHTONGUE RULES!!!!!!!!!!!

I Loved Bloom county! Steve Dallas was my hero! LOL especially with le blob at his side hehe! I really liked the early years but after the bassalope was introduced it quickly went downhill from there =( I have a feeling we will see his quotes and comics years from now when they review our era more than Doonsbury.

The Farside by Gary Larson was my third fav. (sorry I will always love Peanuts as #1 Charles M. Schulzs was a genius!-We Miss you Charlie! :'() Some of Larson's stuff was hilarious and I still love teh boneless chicken ranch as my favorite!

The Basselope was OK. I loved it when he was the stealth bomber and 'enjoyed a Milk Dud' in the free world.

I think the low point of the strip was when Steve Dallas was captured by aliens and returned as a mushy PC dude.

In the earlier cartoons I liked it when he was trying to date that brunette teacher.

I think we all have an 'Anxiety Closet' when you think about it.

Yes some of my fondest memories of the strip is the first book when Milo , Opus and Binkley worked for the newspaper. Milo would do random calls for obituary section of the newspaper saying Mrs soandso are you dead? I wish he would do a comeback, but not in the form of outland, I disliked that whole comicstrip.

Do you still have the Deathtounge vinyl record that came with the third book? I liked "You stink but I love you" I loved the other song, "Billy and the Boingers". I wonder what happened to those garage bands that performed those songs....

Here in Australia we never got much Breathed. But in the past couple of years, some of the Bloom County and Outland collections have appeared in a local comic store and I picked a few up.

Still have the Deathtongue record in the book, undetached.

Opus unfortunately got a bit narky in his later years - much like a teenager in real life  :D

Binkley is my favourite - the sensitive guy trying to make his way in a cruel world.

You make me sick!

Way-o way-o way-o

I have the record. I detached it, put it onto tape, then put it in my scrapbook.

I didm't really care for Outland either. What was the point? Opus and a black girl dealing with issues no one cared about?

Maybe the great Bloom County belongs in the 80's without a comeback. Some things are best left alone.

By the way, was Debbie ever Hairy????

Bloom County was the best, I bought a few of the books but sadly passed them out to others.  He was sharp, rember the music festival?  It was like the "Us" tour but I think it was called "We".  Great biting satire.  BC was my 1st favorite of all times, followed by Calvin and Hobbes, then Far Side.  All are great and I regret there is nothing even close to those strips currently.

You're not kidding.  :P  As soon as Calvin & Hobbes ended, I stopped reading the funnies on a regular basis.  I've been rereading the Bloom County treasury's lately and i've come to realize just how much he satirized a lot of the political scandals and headlines of that era.

I really liked how he made it as if the characters were at a job being their characters.  Remember when they went on strike?  Nothing but blank panels for a couple of days.  ;D  Or the time when he would do a loosely veiled parody on how newspapers were shrinking comic strips and tied a Star Trek theme into it.   ;)

Lola Granola, Billy and the Boingers (aka: Death Tongue).. Steve Dallas was my favourite character.  :D
