Subject: Music that has been covered by other bands

Written By: Bobby on 06/10/03 at 03:07 p.m.

Hello everyone!

I would like to start something off that I'm not sure has been started already.

I hate most cover music (bands that copy other bands songs). But that doesn't mean I hate all of it. I love Dr and the Medics 'Spirit in the sky' more than Norman Greenbaum's version.

What I want to know is 'What is your favourite and worst cover songs of all time?' I'd like to restrict people to one of each but I doubt that is going to happen. The music involved does not have to be restricted to any decade.

I look forward to hearing everyone's replies! :D

I'll start off:

DISCLAIMER: Not necessarily my favourite or least favourite eitherway. That's to come later. >grin<

A cover song I think is better than the same song sung previous

"Lady Marmalade" by The All Saints
which I think was infinitely better than
"Lady Marmalade" by Labelle

A cover song I think is worse than the same song sung previous

"Papa Don't Preach" by Kelly Osbourne
which I think was infinitely worse than
"Papa Don't Preach" by Madonna

Let the lynchings commence!

Good one in my opinion is
Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes

Atomic Kitten covered two songs from the 80s; The Tide Is High by Blondie and Eternal Flame by The Bangles. They're superb versions. I prefer Don McLean's version of American Pie to Madonna's though.

Subject: Re: Music that has been covered by other bands

Hi Stompgal!

Yes, Atomic Kitten are queens of the cover record - The tide is high by Atomic Kitten and Eternal Flame were o.k covers but I did prefer the original versions (there is something sexy about Sussanah Hoff's voice from The Bangles).

As for 'American Pie' by Don Mclean, you're totally right - Madonna ripped the soul right out of it.

Hall & Oates is one of my favorite artists and their version of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" is good but I also like the original.

I like Kim Wilde's cover of Keep Me Hangin' On but again I also like the original by the Supremes. (I do prefer Kim's version though.)

Soft Cell's Tainted Love is another favorite cover song of mine, especially the long version with Where Did Our Love Go.
I don't like Marilyn Manson's version of Tainted Love.

I like Orgy's version of New Order's Blue Monday.

I hate Limp Bizkit's cover of Faith!! Fred Dunce sounds like he's throwing up or something when he sings the chorus..ugh!! >:(

I agree with the Papa Don't Preach cover being bad. And as much as I love Madonna I don't think she should've touched American Pie.

Subject: Re: Music that has been covered by other bands

Written By: Bobby on 06/11/03 at 06:08 a.m.

Hi Princesca!

Faith by Limp Bizkit!?! Tee! Hee!  ;D

I know Marilyn Manson covered a few 80s songs. They weren't bad but not a patch on the originals.

As for Kim Wilde/Supremes versions of 'Keep me hanging on' there isn't too much to chose from them - I prefer Kim's version though!

As for 'You've lost that loving feeling' I do prefer the Righteous Brother's versions. The British band covered the same song and even though I like Erasure, the song was awful!

Written By: Princesa on 06/11/03 at 06:26 a.m.

Hi Bobby! :D

What other 80s songs did Manson cover? I totally forgot about Sweet Dreams. I love the original and it is a haunting song so I guess Manson covering it does fit, though I don't like it.

I have never heard Erasure's version of You've Lost That Loving Feeling. I do like their song Chains Of Love a lot.

I see you put question marks around Limp Bizkit covering Faith. If you haven't heard it consider yourself lucky.

Written By: Bobby on 06/11/03 at 06:38 a.m.

Hi Princesca!

I'm not too sure what other eighties songs (if any) Marilyn did.

Talking of which, have you seen the video 'Calling your name' by a bloke called Marilyn made in 1983? He looked the spitting image of Marilyn Manson - Creepy.

Erasure have recently completed an album called 'Somebody else's songs' in which they have copied tracks to their own synth style. They did a pretty good version of Steve Harley and Cockney Rebels 'Come up and see me (and make me smile)'.

As for Chains of love - Great song!  :D

Hello again Bobby!

I have not seen the video Calling Your Name by the bloke (hehe the UK has some cool slang) named Marilyn. Sadly I don't get to see many 80s music videos as my crappy cable company doesn't have VH1 Classic...I'd get rid of all the other music channels just to have that one!

I love the synth-pop of the 80s! I don't have any Erasure cds but was thinking of purchasing some...any suggestions? Do you recommend I buy their cover songs album?

Recommended Erasure cd is possibly 'Pop' (I think that's the title) it has all of their old stuff including 'Sometimes' and 'Stop'. Wonderland from 1986 is a nice album too featuring my fave 'Reunion' and the original version of Dollar's 'Oh l'amour - class stuff!

As for the british slang - There isn't a lot of people here that talk perfect english. We leave that to the queen (tee hee). ;D

One of my favorite covers is Janet Jackson's "One More Chance," which was originally recorded by her brother Randy on the Jacksons' Victory reunion album in 1984. Janet's version was available on the "If" CD single in 1993.

A cover that I do not like is the Dixie Chicks' "Landslide." Stevie Nicks sings that song like no other.

Gasp! Sacrilege!

Hi Bobby - I can readily think of a few from the 80's - but here's just a couple...

Good Idea...
Madness - It Must Be Love has now become the definitive version of the Labi Siffre original...

Bad Idea...
Tiffany - I Saw Him Standing There - oh dear...

Incidentally, back in the days of black and white and when cover versions abounded, it was generally accepted that UK covers of US hits were weak imitations. I beg to differ on four counts (and see if the purists get upset...)

Tower Of Stength - Frankie Vaughan's version creamed Gene McDaniels'...
Bobby's Girl - Susan Maughan triumphed over Marcie Blaine
Halfway To Paradise - Billy Fury had an infinitely superior arrangement to Tony Orlando (so much so that the song is now almost exclusively associated with the much-missed singer...)
Bend Me Shape Me - Amen Corner's arrangement sounded like a completely different song from the American Breed's...

Anyway, that's just my opinion...let the screaming start!

All the best!

Let's do some bashing NOW!!!  ;D

Madonna ruined American Pie (Don McClean)
Sugababes ruined Shape Of My Heart (Sting)
Puff Daddy ruined Kashmir (Led Zeppelin)
Wyclef Jean ruined Another One Bites The Dust (Queen)
Eminem ruined Dream On (Aerosmith)
5ive ruined We Will Rock You (Queen)
Puff Daddy ruined Every Breath You Take (The Police)
Spice Girls ruined Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves (Aretha Franklin & Anny Lennox)
Sheryl Crow ruined Sweet Child Of Mine (Guns N' Roses)
Robbie Williams ruined every song he touched

I will remember more later, but those are the ones that pop into my mind right now.

Edited to add original artists.

Hello everyone!

Thanks very much for all your responses. I know that Dr. and the medics 'Spirit in the sky' version is perhaps a sacriledge but the sound, to me, seemed a lot more balanced - Hey it could be worse, I could have liked Gareth Gate's version!  ;D

I'm surprised Spice Girls actually covered anything. I didn't rate them much but they did do their own work.

Wycleff Jean, Puff Daddy and Sugarbabes ruin every song they sample. Wycleff Jean, would you believe it, covered 'Guantanamera' originally done by 'The Sandpipers' - Crap!  :( Puff Daddy's attempt at covering 'Every breath you take' is awful and the Sugarbabes - well if they think they are amazing by sampling 'Are friend's electric?' by Gary Numan must be deluding themselves!

'It must be love' by Madness is their song even though they copied it. It's a little like Tom Jones's version of 'Kiss' from Prince. Almost everybody remembers Tom's version (in Britain anyway). I didn't know Amen Corner covered 'Bend me Shape me' - What a brilliant song! I have that in my collection somewhere!

William Shatner covering those songs made me titter  ;D. He's in the same breed as Bruce Willis. 'Not me own work, guv but I'm a well respected artist!'

Bobby - thank you for the suggestions :) I like a lot of European artists so I'm sure I'll love the cds.

As for VH-1 here in the US, it sucks. They've become another version of the E! channel. Their programming is repetitive and tends to focus on all celebrities, not just musicians. The only good thing about VH-1 is their documentaries on 80s artists but I also wanna see the videos!

Subject: Re: Music that has been covered by other bands

Written By: Bobby on 06/12/03 at 05:47 a.m.

Hello again, Princesca.

If it's non-stop music you are after, try VH-1 classics. It's not all eighties stuff but it's good to have on in the background.

An odd suggestion here perhaps but there is a music channel called 'Magic' that runs in a similar style to 'The Box'. The difference being is that the songs are a lot older and you can see videos that you might not have been able to see on VH-1. (I'm sure they use a program loop because I watched two seperate 80s weekends and the showed the same songs in the same order!  >:().

Let us know what type of artists you are interested in.  :D

Cheers.

Hiya Bobby,

Yes, I'm interested in non-stop music video channels but none of them are available for me. I can't get VH1 Classic...curse my cable company! I've never heard of that Magic channel..is it a UK channel? I do remember The Box but they only showed current videos. I like a lot of New Wave songs and would like to see the videos.

To keep on topic of this thread, Britney Spears covered Joan Jett's I Love Rock & Roll. She has bad enough songs of her own, why does she have to ruin someone else's? Ya gotta laugh at her reason for covering it though..."because I just love Pat Benatar"

Nice one! ;D

I preferred Tommy James and the Shondell's version of 'Mony Mony' to Amazulu's and Billy Idol's version.

I prefer Talking Heads version of 'Burning down the house' to Tom Jones and that woman out of The Cardigans.

Subject: Re: Music that has been covered by other bands

I prefer Liberty X's version of "Gotta have your love" to the old 90's one.
However Atomic Kitten's version of "Eternal Flame" is nowhere near as good as The Bangles.
Also Robbie Williams version of "Freedom" by George Michael is absolute tripe!

Subject: Re: Music that has been covered by other bands

Written By: Princesa on 06/12/03 at 07:47 a.m.

Ack, another artist ruined one of George Michael's songs? Poor George. The only Robbie Williams song I ever liked was Angels.

That reminds me Andrew Ridgeley from Wham is married to one of the girls in Bananarama. Ace Of Base covered their song Cruel Summer. I prefer the original.

I think Shattner was actually trying to do these songs in spoken word, thus they were possibly ok in that respect.  If he was actually trying to sing, however, then it sucked.
Michael Bolton's cover of "I don't want to wait anymore", originally by the Tubes, made me hurl.

Bobby, check out their earlier stuff, it was some of the best high tech rock at the time (late 70s to mid 80s).  The Tubes were fine musicians but never made it big commercially, they were huge on the college and west coast club scene, I think they were from AZ.  There is a rather easily obtainable CD, you can find it used for cheap, called "Best of the Tubes", but "Love Bomb" is my personal fave.  Also check their websites in Google.  Tod Rundgren produced and played with them.

I remember hearing an extended techno-style cover of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" in the mid-80's by a band called Colorbox. I still like Kim Wilde's cover best.

There was a compilation of Springsteen covers called "Cover Me" (I wonder which corporate genius came up with that name...) in which Dave Edmunds did "From Small Things, Big Things One Day Come" and Patti Smith did "Because the Night"

I don't know if this counts as a cover or a parody, but I liked the DK's "I Fought the Law".

hey I like Doctor & the medics "spirit in the sky" better than the cover Bauhaus did! strange uh considering that i adore bauhaus? maybe is the video, those 2 creepy girls from Dr & M are so cool! and the drummer with spiked red hair *yum*! (groupie mode hehe)

anyway... i didn't read this whole thread but i just remembered one cover that i really liked. Is the one of "how soon is now" (Smiths) that was made by Love Spit love. The theme of that tv serie "Charmed".

IMO, It's great and there were other bands that covered this awesome song too, but they just literally destroyed it, except for LSL in my humble opinion. Even TATU did the cover but the vocals are just awful. It just didn't work for me, sounds like a gremlin in a japanese karaoke bar singing. She screams like she is suffering from constipation.... yuck but the instrumental is kinda advanced.

there is a cover that i kinda liked that norwegian called "Frost" duo did few years ago... it's kinda underground because the song is originally from a obscure band, sometimes you see the video on VH1, it's a one hit wonder AFAIR, the song is called "clouds across the moon" by the RAH BAND

Now for the funny facts. Do you remember "Be stiff" by Devo?
i guess the original was by Toni Basil, but Lene Lovich covered it too, and it's odd but cool, kinda Nina Hagen/a bit punk/Les Rita Mitsouko sounding  but my fave was by DEVO by heart! awesome, love the basslines!
hmm i can't remember the original by toni basil. LOL sorry

"Tainted love" by Soft Cell was actually a cover of something from the 60s.. then Marilyn Manson covered...and now he ripped off/sampled shameless "Be agressive" by Faith No more, in his new single "Obscene" or something like that. How original :o

I like the cover of "Love will tear us apart" (joy Division) that Swans did. Great stuff.

loads of tributes around, majority kills the songs, unfortunately

I agree with the Papa Don't Preach cover being bad.
End Quote

"Keep me hanging on" was covered by Vanilla Fudge too, it's good, very psychedelic but it's long.. (well it was in the 60s so)

Orgy's cover of New Order is pretty good, i heard another group that covered it too, called Eurochrome, they did a good job! IMO most electronic bands covering electronic stuff sounds kinda ok but never feels better than the original of course. Zoot Woman covered "The Model" (kraftwerk) and it's neat.

"papa don't preach" was an allright attempt, but the original was perfect so it's hard to beat it. And I liked kelly because of the looks and the videoclip, it was sort of 80s. But she is now overexposed in my opinion. And her album sucks, i expected much more.

oh i remembered another good one! Nina Hagen singing "ziggy stardust" (bowie) live!!!! superb!!!!!!!!!

"nothing compares to u" by Prince was covered by Sinead o connor, it was allright but was so overplayed in the radios that i got sick of it.

"send me an angel" by Real Life, was covered by Zeromancer (norwegian goth/metal) and it rocks... ok I'm a fan of them so... and the song is perfect to begin with so...you get the picture!

"you spin me right around" (Dead or Alive) was covered to death, even Thalia covered and it got very very eurodance. I like it... Also Dope covered the same song and it got very metal kinda manson, Uranium235 covered it too with a medley of tainted love.. well those are the stuff that my be played in wannabe goth parties. Allright for a minute because we know the song, but kinda upsetting because i rather the original

recently Primal Scream covered "Some velvet morning" by Nancy Sinatra, i really recommend, it got very very electro and believe or not, Kate Moss sings it! there was a death metal band that covered that one too, kinda odd but it was a nice attempt, they made it epical. The original has such a dark vocal and feeling though, Lee Hazelwood & Nancy sinatra really made a great duo in that song.

Angra covered "wuthering heights" by Kate Bush, the vocals are impressive considering that is a heavy metal guy singing, the instrumental is cool too, but i rather the original.

I absolutely love to death the cover tht Sisters of mercy did of "gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight" (by ABBA) and "Jolene" (Dolly Parton). They are fantastic, but then again i'm obssessed by sisters of mercy.

Siouxsie & the Banshees "I'm the passanger" (Iggy Pop). Outstanding and OMG what a great video. Note that I'm a big fan of sioux, so your mileage may vary :)

Cruxshadows covered "here comes the rain again" (eurythmics) and it's as good as the original, IMO

anyway.. sorry for being long. I guess that's it for now. Most covers are worse than the original...

OMGosh, that cover was so forgettable that i didn't mention it. It's awful! and the video it's so pathetical, she looking like a playmating riding the motorcycle. So kinky! she shakes her butt and get a record deal. Oh dear

Michael Bolton's cover of "I don't want to wait anymore", originally by the Tubes, made me hurl.

I thought that I was the only person that barfed after listening anything of Michael Bolton. If i was a bulimic it would be the easiest way to make me puke. NO fingers, no toothbrush necessary, just Michael Bolton and the toilet.
how sad, that guy is the plague! LOL

lol!  Bolton always starts off soft then ends up screaming with his veins popping out and his sickening hoarse voice screaming, he sucks.  "Ain't no Cure for the Summertime Blues" was covered by a couple of bands, think original was Eddie Cochran.

I enjoy your posts, great thread  ;)
Cutting his hair was the only good thing that Bolton has ever done, I guess.  :o
