Subject: What songs leave a lump in your throat?

Written By: Bobby on 06/13/03 at 04:24 a.m.

This is a question that appeals to the vulnerability in all of us.

'What song(s), when you listen to them, make you remember certain parts of your life (events etc)?'

I will go first to show my emotional intrepidness . . .

'Always on my mind' - Pet shop boys
'Don't you just know it' - Amazulu
'King of wishful thinking' - Go west
'Sacrifice' - Elton John

I will definitely look forward to your replies.  :)

Bright Eyes - Art Garfunkel
She Couldn't Laugh - Twarres
Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler
Neither One Of Us - Gladys Knight & The Pips
Last Kiss - Pearl Jam
Ebony Eyes - Everly Brothers

No. I wouldn't ask for personal information, Borris66au.

'Do they know it's Christmas' - Band Aid. Reminds me of . . . Christmas at home oddly enough. A special time 1985/1986.

Thanks for sharing.  ;)

It's been a while since it happened to me. When it happens, it ususally happens upon the first time I listen to the song.
I remember it being:

# The Captain Of Her Heart -  ???
# Where The Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue
# Somebody To Love - Queen (It actually happened much later. I never paid much attention to the lyrics, until someone asked me for a translation of them.)
# Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits

Hello RockPrincess!

When you put the 'question mark' smiley next to 'Captain of my heart' are you looking for the group? The group is called 'Double'.

Random thought:

I really like this song, I think it's very moving and touching, and Bette Midler does a great job.

But Watt sang it and recorded it to mp3 and sent it to me, and it was one of the funniest things I had ever heard ;D

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Music is an amazing memory enhancer which helps us remember, not only the bad times but the meaningful times. Without music, there definitely would be no soul to human beings. (Pardon the pun on soul - ha ha!)

'Alone' by Heart is a powerful song from 1987. The power ballads of that particular time evoke something from me. Examples include 'I knew you were waiting' by George Michael/Aretha Franklin and 'Nothing's gonna stop us now' by Starship.

Good stuff!  :)

There are ways to find humor in just about everything, and I think that is a good thing!!  And, maybe I'm as cheeseball for saying this, but I think Weird Al proves that point all the time!  Keep the laughter!!  :)  ;D :) ;D

Anything from Van Halen.

Reminds me of my first love and a very good time in my life. :)

These songs have a private meaning to me.  I have associated them with certain strong emotional periods in my life... they usually revolve around lost loves, etc.  So when I get into a reflective mood they tend to make me relive those particular moments.  As you can see "love" is a predominant theme in the list.

"All Of My Love" - Led Zeppelin
"I'm Not In Love" - 10cc
"Hammer On A Drum" - Paul Hyde & The Payola$
"You're The Only Love" - Paul Hyde & The Payola$
"Crying Out For Love" - The Box
"Lust For Love" - Images In Vogue
"World's Away" - Strange Advance

And finally, although not 80's oriented, "Little Light of Love" by Eric Serra (end theme from "The Fifth Element") always reminds me of when my infant son, Chris, passed away in my arms last August.    :'(

I don't think this one is from the 80's, but:

"Who Wants To Live Forever" by Queen.

I first heard it about an hour after I learned a childhood friend had just died of AIDS that he got from a blood transfusion.  :'(  I still can't listen to it without crying.

Another one, that I know is not 80's is:

"Indian Princess" by Monsoon featuring Sheila Chandra

It is about a woman who is widowed at a very young age, and very closely describes the lonliness and despair a friend of mine is going through, now that she is a widow at 35.  :'(

Not all 80's but...........

The Beatles - In my life
The Beatles - Here, there and everywhere
Gabrielle - Rise
Whitney Houston - I will always love you
Van Morrison - Have I told you lately that I love you
Madonna - Nothing Fails
Madonna - Little Star
REM - Everybody Hurts
Wings - Silly love songs
? - Take my breath away

This song is actually called "Where Is This Love?" I also mentioned it in my post of weepy songs. :) The song does feature that line, but it's not called that.

He's home again
He's drunk again
He's bouncing off the walls again
A fist falls down like a hammer on a drum
A hammer on a drum

Where is this love that will open the doors?
Where is this love that makes me cry out for more?
Where is this love that comes from above?
Where is this looooooooove?

I commend you for typing the band's name as it should be. I almost did that, but I decided not to for whatever reason. A good song by a mediocre Canadian band. I preferred their very early stuff myself ("China Boys," etc.) I loved your Images In Vogue choice though! ;D

Thanks AV!  I just corrected that in my MP3 files.  It's a great song.  I've been searching Kazaa for the video for it.

This may sound strange, but do you recall if the video for Images In Vogue's "Lust For Love" had a tarantula in it?  I'm trying to remember a video where a guy had a tarantula crawling over him and I think it was in this video.   :)

Yes, a tarantula does make an appearance crawling over someone in the "Lust For Love" video, but I couldn't tell you at which point. Was it in the courtroom maybe? It was a very artistically done video. I really like Images In Vogue, by the way...I think they were one of the only truly "new wave" groups to come out of this country! I have just about everything they've recorded on vinyl. :)

Tears in Heaven will make me cry forever.  Soon after it was released my friends baby died of SIDS.  I always think of her when this song is played.

Anything by Steve Goodman makes me get all teary.  He's mostly 70's but has some 80s songs including Go Cubs Go.

If anyone knows the name of the following song I will be your friend for life and name my next child or next dog after you.

"These are the days of the endless summer
these are the days the time is now
There is no past there's only the future
there's only here there's only now"

This was played when the cubs won the 1989 division title and I've been trying to find it ever since!

'Never gonna give you up' - Rick Astley
'You win again' - Bee Gees
