Subject: Were You A Teenager In the 80's?

Written By: MethodActor85 on 06/24/03 at 09:13 p.m.

If you were born sometime from 1961 to 1976, for at least one year of the 80's you were a teenager during that decade, meaning that "Eighties Teens" range in age now from 42 to 27.

What was it like, being a teenager during the 1980s? Were they fun times that seem like yesterday, or are you glad those days are over?

I'm just curious...I was born in 1985, so I never really got to grow up in the 80's. Heh, when I told this one guy my birthyear, he was all," I was a junior in college in '85. You could be my son!" I insisted that he is in no way old enough to have children that are getting ready to turn 18, but he was all, "I was sexually active in 1985. I'm old enough to be your father."  I was going to ask him if it was weird from him to think that the babies who were born when he was in college are now old enough to be in high school and college themselves, but I figure that it might have made him feel old.

I was born in 1971. The 80's ruled and I miss those days. The clothes, the music, the movies, my friends. Reagan was in office and I had a great girlfriend. The 80's were some of the best years of my life.

I was born in 1963 and was 16 when the 80s started...  The 80s were my most influential decade...my fave music and fashions were from that decade...  But I also love the 50s music and fashions, even if I wasnt around then  :)

I was born in 1975.  I graduated high school in 1993, so I was a young teenager in the late 80's.  It doesn't seem all that long ago to me.  But that part of the decade was the least fun when you look at the entire 80's.  The late 80's had really stupid and idiotic stuff like New Kids on the Block and Paula Abdul going on.  Everything about the 80's was going out of style at that point.  When I started high school in the fall of 1989, no one even wanted to be reminded it was still the 80's.  It was almost like kids were just looking forward to the 90's.  I used to wish I was born somewhere in 1964 to 1969, so I could be a full fledged 80's teenager and experience the heart and soul of the decade as a teen or early 20's.  Being an early 90's kid was OK, but I think it would been far better being a true 80's teenager.  I used to have a friend that always insisted we were robbed, and that we should have been born somewhere in the 60's.

MethodActor85, come on you can't blame that guy for feeling like your dad around you.  I know I would feel like someone's dad around some little kid that was 20 years younger then me and born in 1995.  How are you going to feel around that future baby born in 2005?  Socially that guy is a little young to be your father.  If your parents are only 20 years older then you, then you got some really young parents.  It's a bit wreckless for 20 year olds to start families, but clearly biologically a person is old enough to be someone's parent if you are 14-15+ years older then them.  A friend of mine that is the same age as me is still a Boy Scout Leader at age 27/28.  He tells me that the kids he works with that were born after 1992 look at people my age as "adults"/"parents".  Which is about right, I know I used to kinda think that way about anyone more then 15 years older then me.

I was born in 1971 and graduated in 1989.  I loved the 80's, it just felt safer.  I loved the styles of the time, too.  It was nice that guys took the time to look clean and neat.  Once grunge hit it seems like the guys like to look like they don't shower.

You too, huh? Well, at least I don't feel so old now.  ;)

The 80s was not a good time for me. The first year was ok-I was in high school and had some fun. Then we moved in my senior year-yuck. The new school was ok, but I did miss my friends back in the old one. And all throughtout my high school years, I felt stufficated at home. I wanted to be independent and my parents still treated me like I was 12. I just didn't tell them half the things that I actually did.  ;) If they only knew...

Then I finally moved out and was finally on my own and at the ripe old age of 19, I married the wrong guy, for the wrong reasons, and at the wrong time. Needless to say, it didn't take.

It wasn't until the 90s when I finally found the independence I so desired for many, many years and that was when I finally found "Mr. Right."  ;D

I was born in 1970 and graduated in 1988, and my teen years were the best times. I want them back! I'd say the best years were from 1985 thru 1987. It was like one big party and so much fun. I went to concert after concert. I saw Motley Crue, Dio, Ozzy, Aerosmith, Guns n roses and many more. There were rock concert tours every time you turn around. Another great thing was when we would go to the arcade to play the cool video games. The graphics sucked on the home computers, so everyone would go to the arcade on the weekends and blow roll after roll of quarters on them. Now the arcades are all but extinct because of xbox and playstation 2. Everone stays home now. thats no fun. One last thing was all the teen clubs that were around. they were so much fun. they played great music and you could be a teen and feel like an adult. You couldnt drink alcohol in them of course, but thats what the parties before and after were for. You could smoke cigarettes in all the clubs no matter how old you were, and noone would think twice about it, nowadays everyone looks at you like your committing a crime if you light up in a public place. It was just a much more care free, fun time to be a teen. Long live the 80's!!!

That's why you have so many intreptations of every decade.  Every decade has such a wide age range of people that were kids in it.  The 80's of someone born in 1961 will not be the same 80's as someone born in 1975 or 1976.

90's teenagers would range from people born from 1971 to 1986 as well.  And it would be the same deal.  Some 90's teens may think of being a teenager and listening to Nirvana or Pearl Jam, while someone your age was 13 or 14 in 1999 when Britney, N'Sync and Eminem were popular.

I was born in 1969 so I was a teenager in the 1980's.  I left school in the mid-eighties and started work.

I remember some great concerts at the local Uni.  That was when some really good bands would play relatively small venues.  There also used to be local bands playing at pubs in town and bars on the campus that were really good too.

Sometimes still wish I was back there.  It seems weird to me when people talk to me like I'm an adult.  I still feel about 16.  Still I've been married for over 10 years now and I've got two children so if that doesn't make me an adult nothing will!

I was fer shur!    ;D

I loved it.  There were lots of things I loved about it then and I still like in retrospect (probably MORE so after seeing the literal garbage people wear these days).  I agree w/Dagwood.  I loved the fashions and the music (even if I spent alot of time listening to oldies).  It was wild and sprightly and cheery, or at least it seemed so on the surface.  Well, that's better than nothing.  Yes, I'd do it again in a minute!

And yes, I liked having Reagan (big surprise   ;) ), but there was still alot of public vitriole for him and conservative ideas, at least in public outlets (the usual suspects - "Hollywood", print and visual media).  Really he was the only serious conservative voice.

But, I won't vouch for movies.  There were some good 1s, true, but largely even then I didn't like movies much cuz they offended too much.  I'd say movies were "OK" overall.  Some were great and some were very good.

I couldn't stand Reagan cause I knew him for the liar and fraud that he was. I thought that neon colored clothes were ugly. I thought that all the chicks with perms looked like poodles.

I was born in 1976 so I'm right at the tail end (wish there was an icon for a donkey butt:)) of being a teenager, but part of why I still love the 80's so much is because it was an ENTIRE period of awakening...not only did I progress from childhood to pre-teen to puberty by the end of the decade,  I discovered  MUSIC!! And music was more important to me than anything.  (and still is).  While the other kids had George Michael posters up, I graced my walls with Steve Winwood (whom I JUST had the pleasure of seeing at a (Grateful) dead concert last weekend!)... oh ..and... Duran Duran :) All the songs from the 80's whether good bad or otherwise mean something to me.  Part of the time I was too little to understand FULLY what "I Want Your Sex" meant ;)

I was coming of an age where I cared how I looked and cared what the style was :)

I still wish I had my sequined glove, my red Thriller jacket, and my lace gloved with the fingers cut out of them.

Oh and leather jackets with 42371237982 zippers for show :)

I feel sometimes I'm having a pre-30's crisis (I'll be 27 next month) and reading about 80s stuff and listening to the music makes me feel half-youthful sometimes  :-*

those movies were released,if I remember right, when I was 15 to 17...

well, I was born in 1969. so my teenage meories are equally related to 80s.
I don't know how many of you guys notice but the decade is so called "Bubble era" in Japan.
You may know that there were so many books about "Japanese economy therets to the world" or "TOYOTA" "SONY" so on...

what I try to say is that it is like most of Japanese were so optimistic and so alive.
but it has gone like a BUBBLE at the biginig of 1990, last decade is so called "LOST 10 years."
Our government is stil strugling anyway.
I am stil optimist and easy going because of my background, but my girlfriend is 7 years younger so she is "90s", believes in realism so much.

I wasn't an 80's teenager as I was only born in '82, however my ex-boyfriend was as he was born in '67.
He was an absolute 80's obsessive!  He ONLY liked the music from that time, he kept his hair and clothes in quite an '80's style and spoke about it all the time - how marvellous it was and how bad its been since!!
He made me feel quite jealous at times!

The best part of being a teen in the 80s was that there was such a major change evolving quickly into what I would term "waaaaay better music".  Born: 1963, graduated: 1982.

truth be told, all i remember of the 80s was all the time i spent in my room or my friends basement playing colecovision and the 64 or playing D&D. i was the total 80s geek  ;D
the only music i truly listen to now is 80s new wave, mostly post-punk and goth. much to the embarassment of my g-friend.  ;)

Ditto.

Not that I feel outcasted in my generation at all, but I wish I could have seen the bands I now love now, worn certain clothes and just generally be a part of the whole ambiance. Then again, I'm also contentented that I can live in this era beacuse of the new technology et al, and appreciate music from the 90s, and 00s - but I think it would have been fantastic to grow up in the 80s.

All the fashion is coming back, and people are starting to think the 80s are cool once again - I'm just happy that they brought back off-the-shoulder-tops! I fell in love with that fashion from the age of 4 when I saw Belinda Carlisle wearing one (well an off-the-shoulder dress!) in her 'Heaven is A Place on Earth' video :)

I like it all, glad the 80's are kinda comin back, but no one can actually take ur experience, sure i was jealous i wasn't a teen at that time but honoring that and becoming 80's obsessive in my teen years works fine for me too! Plus living in briatin in the 80's was gr8 cos most stuff 80's was british (or american..sometimes I'm biased but i remember madonna and MJ merci!) and i recently got into def leppard, I HAD NO IDEA THEY WERE BRITS..duh, i'm still learning..

I was born in 1968, so yes.  In retrospect, yes, I'm glad that I grew up when I did.  I think that the teen movies that we had were definitely good, as was the music.  However, at the time, I'd wished that I was a teen in the 70's...especially when punk first came out.
