Subject: Who were the 80s icons?

Written By: kris on 07/03/03 at 00:16 a.m.

Belgian quality newspaper De Standaard is featuring extensive articles on all -still living- generations that shaped the 20th century. This week it's all about us 30-something boys and girls; who we are, what we do. Dominated by Reaganomics and Thatcherism throughout the major slice of the 80s, sociologists consider us to be a lost generation (!), missing real icons that should've created ideals for us to strive for.

What do you guys think of this? IMHO, Bob Geldhof and his 'Against Famine in Africa' projects can surely be considered as an 80s icon...

Yeah, I thought about it. Then I thought it would have been too obvious of a choice for me. ;D I am biased, you know. I must try to remain objective....must...try... :P ;) :)

I remember shows like the A-Team from the 80's that made Mr. T. an icon and Knight Rider with that guy from baywatch, and listened to music like Duran Duran. For politics, it was all dominated by the republicans. And in sports, I liked the 84-85 Bears with people like Jim McMahon who would moon women from the team bus by sticking his butt out the window. Why would he moon women? I dunno, but as a kid I thought it was funny. I guess none of my Icons from the 80's were really important people, they were all images.

Although he was quite a man-about-town during the '70's, I think Andy Warhol definitely qualifies as an '80's icon....when he died, it seemed like a big part of the '80's culture died along with him.
