Subject: Any The Sisters Of Mercy fans over here ?

Written By: Alice on 07/05/03 at 11:46 a.m.

Hi,I'm new to this board and I would like to know if there's any Sisters Of Mercy fans on here?
I'm a massive Sisters fan for years already and I would like to exchange some new knowledges about that cult 80s "gothic" band.

And yes,I love the 80s too!

"temple of love" and "More" are 2 great songs. They were in Portugal at more less 2 years ago. They were a little bit diferent. People expect a gotic concert and it wasn't. :o

first & last & always
is the ultimate album of my life, the real soundtrack

I love also the demos with Emma, their covers (dolly parton's Jolene, Gimme Gimme by Abba)
some boys wander by mistake is great... as well some girls wander by mistake
i have tons and tons of bootlegs and unfortunately saw them live ONLY once at the Forum in London 1998. Wish i had seem them in the 80s though, the former line-up.

Actually i met my husband through a Sisters Fan club... well go figure, we have the greatest collection and tons of t-shirts. LOL

Eldritch is too darn arrogant tough, he is the brain but it's sad no newer stuff been released anymore as far as i know (we are the same susanne? was the last wasn't it?)...

I have their Greatist Hits Vol 1 and a couple of 12" records of theirs.  Not a bad song on it.  Lucrietia my Reflection is probably my favorite.

Sorry for not replying you earlier.Yes,I too think that "First And Last And Always"(1985) is their lightest career peak. They've reached a pure perfection on it.Eldritch's breathtaking funeral vocal and his very rich lyrical style,Hussey's trademark twelve-string guitar sound,Adams's thundering bass,Marx's more than just suitable second guitar and Dr Avalanche's brilliant drum kits all made that perfection so obvious.A masterpiece! But unfortunately it was their funeral as well because within a year Adams and Hussey both would be gone because of their disagreements with Eldritch,Marx left earlier being overshadowed by Hussey's arrival in 1984.Eldritch moved to Hamburg(Germany)that year and British press pronounced him dead.

During that time British "gothic" scene was at its highest peak. The Mission,The Cult and Zodiac Mindwarp all made albums of their careers and about Eldritch nothing could be heard all the way up to the late 1987 when he presented the next Sisters line-up introducing Patricia Morrison(ex of The Gun Club)on bass making "Floodland" one of the most grandiotic albums ever IMO which is stimultaneously sillier and more serious than the works of all that previously mentioned bands together.Who else would hire the 40-voice New York Choral Society, and the architect of Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell"(1977),Jim Steinman,to produce a song of such bleak poetic symbolism as "This Corrosion"(1987)?"Floodland" is an experience of untrammelled, trancendent splendour.A real classic!

As for "Vision Thing"(1990),I find it as one of the best rock albums I've heard in music's history ever.Spooky synths of "Floodland" this time were replaced by rocking guitars. It was an altogether rockier sound than ever before, but Eldritch's lyrics remained dark and mysterious, and not without a sense of humour. As for its highlights I will specially mention "Ribbons",alongside "Some Kind Of Stranger"(on "First And Last And Always"),IMO one of the best songs that Sisters have ever done and gorgeous "More".

"Some Girls Wander By Mistake(Sisters 80-83)"(1992)I would recommend to any "serious" music fan because if you only buy one Sisters record then this is the one to get.

While "A Slight Case Of Overbombing...Greatest Hits Volume One(Sisters 84-93)"(1993)is a savagely pretty,quasi-psychedelic intelligent rock music. One of my all time favourite best of/greatest hits albums.

Yes,I think a big majority of their cover versionssound much better when performed by them.

I saw them three times live.First it was over here in my hometown Zagreb(Croatia,Central Europe)in November 1990 when I was just 12 years old(I have a bootleg of that show!)while the other two times were this year in Germany. All three of them were just fantastic!Eldritch proved he can't be written off just like that once again for the 100th time.
Yeah,I wish I had seen them live way back in the first half of the 80s too in a time when their live shows were described as a real ritual in that full meaning because of that constant use of smoke and ice on the stage.

I wouldn't say Eldritch is arrogant at all. He's just being charismatic. That's all.I have lots of his interviews collected and I must say he's incredibly smart, kind and very surprising. He's completely different out of stage.

Yes,I would loved them to finally release their brand new album too. It's been 13 years since "Vision Thing" and nothing's actually happened."Summer","We Are The Same Susanne" and "Crash And Burn" among others are one of the latest songs they've done. And it really would be nice if they would put them out.

What is your favourite Sisters artwork?

Thanks for the reply. I will answer later, been going through some problems at the moment.
Anyway, I meant about being arrogant live. He put the whole audience down because we weren't singing in the tune! said loads of smartass type of comments. He changed his outfit 3 times. I still love him. LOL but I wish he wasn't that mean. Probably all the speed he consume makes him say stuff he doesn't really mean.
Wayne Hussey on the other hand was fantastically charistmatic live. He was awesome. It was a very intimate gig 2 years ago, so I was at the first row. He even offered wine to us! Adam also kicked ass.

anyway, talk to you later!
take care
