Subject: The Young Ones

Written By: Hoeveel on 07/08/03 at 08:59 p.m.

Arguably the most perfect comedy to grace the small screen.

Deliberately shot down at it's peak so it didn't wither away into banality.

I was just looking at TV Tome and it mentions how 'Several scenes were censored from the MTV airings in the mid-1980s.' I've only seen the BBC versions. So can anyone remember which scenes they cut and why?

For me they could have cut the whole lot....I couldn't stand this programme although hubby loved it so I suffered it...that way I got to watch the football without him being able to complain  ;)

Heheheh. I can't imagine how anyone could dislike it. There were just no rules to it at all, it was completely absurd but at the same time they slipped in a lot of political stuff. So what did (/do) you prefer watching, comedy-wise, then? :)

Not so much comedy programmes but programmes that incorporated comedy:
Have I Got News For You, They Think It's All Over, Room 101 and Never Mind The Buzzcocks were my favourites.

HIGNFY was good - much better than Ian Hislops magazine - and the Buzzcocks had some good silly moments.

Who do you think should host HIGNFY now? I think the best so far has been Martin Clunes. And despite the fact i don't like him, that bloke Jeremy Clarkson could work.

Never really watched They Think It's All Over cos i pay absolutely no attention to sport so i had no idea who the guest were or what they were on about most of the time  :-/

I hope they get someone really crappy to host it and it dies a death cos I live in Australia now and can't see it!!!!
What happened with Angus Deaton anyway? I never did hear the full story. I doubt anyone will be as good as he was whoever they get.

That's very selfish of you!  >:( :( As i remember, the story with Angus Deayton was that he went on a coke(and possibly other things)-binge with a prostitute and promised to marry her or something and it ended up in the newspapers. The BBC just said they couldn't keep him on as the presenter.

Of course it's very selfish...you'd rather I lie and say I hope the show gets fantastic when I can't see it??

Heh. Spose you can't change how you feel.

This is the BBC's glossing over of the story, there's probably a more detailed article somewhere else,

Thanks for that...i'll check it later as it's time to go make it look like i've been busy all day before hubby gets home.

And to any other HIGNFY fans...i really really hope the show is as wonderful as it ever was...EVEN THOUGH I CAN'T BLOODY WATCH IT.

better?

Apparently they were keen to ask William Hague to host the show permanantly as he was very good on the guest show he did.( I saw it and he was hysterical believe it or not !!) However for various reasons he declined and they have decided to keep the guest presenter format going.

Yes but back to one of the best comedy shows of the 80s - The Young Ones! I'll never forget Neil standing around with a hot pot wondering what to do because the table wasn't laid for dinner.

"Oh my hands are burning - heavy man!"

Also the famous scene where Vivian wonders why he shouldn't put his head out of a moving train and then finds his head cut off and blood spurting everywhere - genius!  :D

I'm with you all the way Hoeveel!   :)

I still quote the occasional thing from this programme.

I also remember they used to have some really good music every (?) week.  Usually the band would be in their house.  I remember Alexsei Sayle (who also played the landlord) singing "Dr Martens Boots" and Jools Holland singing something when the housemates were walking to the launderette.

Alexei 'ullo John got a new motor' Sayle was amazing and full of energy. He would always crack me up. Especially when he did a dance on stage and sang really stupidly - I'm not sure whether it's the same song you are referring to Karen.

That's sounds like every Alexei song!

I only remember him singing Dr Marten's Boots in The Young Ones but could be wrong.

On the topic of songs can anyone else remember the casts versions of Living Doll with Cliff Richard?  I think it was for Comic Relief or something similar.  Whenever I hear the original version I can't help putting in the bits they added.

Remember it very well. It was Comic Relief '86 - Funny stuff.

Does anyone remember Not The Nine O'clock News.  That was another good comedy programme.  I always remember the Hedgehog sandwich. ;D

Yeah, Not the Nine O'Clock News was good too. But i've only seen a handful of episodes. You know that little skit at the beginning of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? Where Will Smith is caught graffitti-ing and he pretends the can is deodorant?

They nicked that from Not the Nine O'Clock News!

:o
>:(
:(
;D

By the way, i like your personalised picture. It reminds me of those hologram thingies you could get with cereal, where you'd get a little animation when you tilted it. :)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my favourite show :)

I have the DVDs now at long last - but they havent released the entire collection yet so I still drag out my videos.

Hoeveel I am not positive about the censored versions - I have all the Aussie and UK series on video  that I taped when they were originally shown and also versions that were repeated years later.  I know one version of the UK edition edited the tampon scene out but I cant remember if it was the original or later ones.  I will have to watch them all back to back on weekend and see if I can spot any other censored bits.

It was originally shown at 11pm here so not a whole lot was ever cut at that hour and our ABC has always been extremely liberal thank goodness otherwise we would miss brilliant comedys.

Karen - I always loved the song (being a dedicated Cliffy fan for 30 years helps !!).  I still have the 6 inch and 12 inch singles and a huge 6 foot by 4 foot poster of Cliff and all the Young Ones.  :)

I think it was the first programme that showed a woman farting - In a way that's groundbreaking!

Ah it warms the heart to see the sacrifices board memebers are willing to make for each other here! ;D
