Subject: Dumbest Songs of the 80's

What is, in your opinion, the stupidist song from the 80's? Anything is welcome.

...You also have to have a reason why.  ::)

'Shaddup your face' by Joe Dolce.

The lyrics are enough to qualify this as a dumb song. He also put a blackboard on the stage and got people to sing it from the blackboard.

"What I Am" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians because it's long, boring, stupid, and I have to go to the ER every time I hear it because it makes my ears bleed.

"Mother" by the Police because it scares the crap out of me.

Don't know if anyone outside the UK had this inflicted on them, but the 'Birdie song' (by The Tweets, I think) has to be a strong contender for dumbest song of all time- why??? Well, if you've been to a wedding/ function disco in the UK in the last 20 years, you will have witnessed the appalling spectacle of elderly (often drunk) relatives crowding the dancefloor to join in with this song (always shouting the last verse as 'AND YOU SHAKE YOUR A*S' ). Whilst those involved may feel the benefits, sadly those benefits are hard to quantify for those viewing this behaviour. How can one song be responsible for so much embarrassment :o ???

I would have to say -

2) Matthew Wilder - Break my stride

Both aren't too bad to listen to, really, but the lyrics / premise of both songs are ridiculous!!

There were so many.

I wanna be a Cowboy (even though I think it is funny and laugh everytime I hear it)

(I think it was called) Rappin' Ronny-someone sounding like Ronald Reagan.

Rumors-Can't remember who sang it

Rapture-Blondie

I know there is a lot more and I can't think of them at the moment. But just because they are stupid songs doesn't mean that I don't like them-they are just stupid.

'Stutter Rap' by Morris Minor & The Majors (don't know if anyone outside the UK will have heard of this) was a well silly song. Ostensibly a parody of the Beastie Boys, it did well in offending people with a speech impediment nationwide; that being said, political correctness wasn't widespread in the UK during the 'smash and grab' years...  ::)

Certainly the 'Birdie Song' has gotta be up there. When I was DJing the amount of requests I got for that so that people could do that stupid dance was appalling. It was worse when the Australian swimming team used it as their official victory song during the 1994 Commonwealth Games.  :-X

'I Don't Love You, You Don't Love Me' by Trio, and anything by Yello.

Tee Hee! Oh dear! I loved 'Stutter rap' (No sleep 'till bedtime)by Morris Minor and The Majors. At the time I thought it was very funny but I do understand why it could offend people.

One of the lyrics that did crack me up was the line "It's worse than Benny Hill and that's bad enough." During the song they gently deride '19' by Paul Hardcastle and 'I feel for you' by Chaka Kahn.

I think the one-hit-wonder by Thomas Dolbey "She Blinded Me With Science" kinda sucks. You have to be in a good mood to like the song. Also the lerics are kinda weird. You have back-up singers at a high pich singing: "She blinded me with science" and then you got some weird guy screaming: "SCIENCE!"
It's just a freaky song, if you ask me. Plus, why would someone "blind" you with "science"?  ::)
What the heck does that mean anyway?
And if that's the only good song Thomas Dolbey can make that's worth anything, he sure wasn't trying too hard  ::)

Isn't blinding someone with science when you use so much...well, science to back up your argument that you end up confusing the person you are talking to (so they assume you are right, i'm guessing)?

This was a cover of the song originally done by David Essex in the 70's.

My nominations:

- What's Your Name? - Depeche Mode
- Boys Say Go! - Depeche Mode
- Anything by The B-52's could be considered stupid but they were fun songs
- Mickey - Toni Basil
- Most (if not all) songs written and produced by Stock/Aitken/Waterman...mindless, fluffy pop drivel (Sorry, Bobby ;D)
- She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby (Hyperactive was much better)
- Genius Of Love - The Tom Tom Club
- Wot - Captain Sensible (but I still love it!)
- Happy Talk - Captain Sensible (ditto)
- The Chicken Song - Spitting Image (love this one as well!)
- Holiday Rap - MC Miker "G" and Deejay Sven
- Bad Boys - Wham! (still a fun song to listen to though)

That's about it for now. As you can see, some songs, though stupid, are still great for their comic value and fun to listen to...and others are just moronic beyond comprehension. Both have been indicated appropriately. (i.e. No comment = moronic.)

Absolutely Vile

- Holiday Rap - MC Miker "G" and Deejay Sven
End Quote

I love all these! 'The Chicken Song' by Spitting Image is so class - especially at the end when they all sing out of tune! 'Holiday Rap' by MC Miker and Deejay Sven borrows heavily from Madonna but I can forgive it - Just about. 'She blinded me with Science' is stupid but I love it. Especially when the old psychiatrist says the key line.

As for calling Stock, Aitken and Waterman 'mindless fluffy pop drivel' young lady, I've got no choice but to forgive you as you forgave me for disliking The Smiths - Humph!  ;)

As it turns out, I've been downloading Smiths songs to find out whether they are a band that I could get into - they are slowly growing on me (doh!).

"The Chicken Song" is the best one out of the three. "Holiday Rap" is a rather fun song...but I'm just sick to death of "She Blinded Me With Science."

Ugh!

The dumbest songs I've heard were:
Men in Hats: Safety Dance
B-52's: Love Shack
Superbowl shuffle: A football team sang this so they could win the superbowl. Does anyone remember who the team was that sang it or the song?  ???

Safety Dance- Just too long and the music was just soooooo annoying. Pleeeeaseee There is no such thing as a safety dance. Or was there? Who cares it was just a stupid song.

Love shack-The video, the whole song was a joke. Period.

Superbowl shuffle: First of all, they couldn't sing, they couldn't dance. It was just a waste of time. They won the superbowl but still...

The song sucked!

Like, gag me with a spoon ok?  :-X

That was the "Jump In The Saddle Band".

And no, I did not look it up.  I was a big Dr. Demento fan back then, and just remembered it because the name of the group was so unique.

OK, let me put my 2 cents in.  I am not calling these BAD songs, just that the lyrics are stupid.  I admit that I listen to some of them  :P

The Rapping Duke      Da-ha-ha-ha, enough said

Tom's Diner  -  Suzanne Vega    Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do, this song is so annoyingly addicting, you find yourself humming it forever.

Buffalo Gals  -   Malcolm Mclaren   This song was very influential, but also VERY stupid.  Of course, now our kids think that Eminem is the bomb, not realizing that "Without Me" is just a rip-off from this often forgotten but influential rap song.  (If you have a good stereo copy, try listen to each side {right and left ballance} seperately - they are fully seperated)

One Night In Bangkok  -  Murray Head   OK, Murray was awesome in Jesus Christ Superstar.  But come on, a musical, written by Abba, about CHESS?

Roaches  -  Bobby Jimmy & The Critters   This was a parody of "Rumors", and got a lot of airplay on LA radio when it came out.  OK, now who wants to hear a song about about roaches running all over your crib?

Cheers!  :)

I'm wanted dead or alive..."  ::)

"Oh, and anything by Vanilla Ice"

Wasn't he 90's?

I have to admit anything by John Cougar Mellencamp (Melon camp) sounds stupid....Why?  He sounds like a country singer, and he's totally TONE-DEAF!!!!

That doesn't make his songs stupid.  He is a great songwriter/musician who doesn't need to add computerized effects to his music like most artists today.  Have you ever heard "Wild Night", "Peaceful World"?  "Pink Houses"?  Those songs are anything but dumb.

I love (most of) these songs!  Those I don't, well, I just don't know them.

I think about "I Wanna be a Cowboy" rather often lately.  I haven't heard it in years, and I liked it alot.  I recall it well, driving in my parents' Lincoln w/2 of my cousins to visit our other cousins for the weekend, and it crashed on the stations that week and was played alot on the way up.  My typically goofy cousin was laughing and then getting into it and doing his spoofs....ah, the memories.... :)

As for really dumb - to me, it has to be all-around goofy or something, and of course I wouldn't like it.  I can't think of any now, but none of those I've read qualify IMO.   :-/
