Subject: I'm A Cult Hero (The Cure)

Written By: Absolutely_Vile on 07/13/03 at 05:05 p.m.

I wonder if someone could please clear something up for me. I have in my possession a mix tape of Cure songs. On it, amongst other album tracks, etc. are songs like "I'm A Cult Hero" and "I Dig You" and a cover of Jimi Hendrix' "Foxy Lady." I (stupidly) never did ask where these songs came from when I got the tape from my school friend (this was over a decade ago), and I never really thought of it 'til now when I saw the thread with the quiz which has a question about which band Robert Smith was in before The Cure.

Anyway, I know these are Cure songs and they're from very early in their career, but where can they be found (besides going online and searching for them)? Are they B-sides? Also, I was told once that another working name for The Cure before they were The Cure was Cult Hero hence, "I'm A Cult Hero." Is this true? Please fill me in! Thanks. :)

Hey Vile! It is an interest request! at first I supposed that the Hendrix cover was from their early years, because when the band just started, they used to play Bowie and Hendrix at school gigs. So I checked in a Cure biography book that I have ("FAITH" by Bowler & Dray) and remembered the obvious: "Foxy Lady" features in their debult album, Three Imaginary Boys (1979).
It's been a while that I don't listen to that one. :o

The funny thing from the book are excerpts from reviews about the album:
""the albums is a masterful debut"
according to Ian Birch's  MELODY MAKER in a review entitled
"THE EIGHTIES START HERE"." (page 46)

so it was the beginning of a new era :)

>Also, I was told once that another working name for The >Cure before they were The Cure was Cult Hero hence, "I'm A >Cult Hero

I didn't see this being mentioned anywhere in this biography or others. The usual reference is that their first name was MALICE (1976), then EASY CURE (1977) and finally THE CURE, (1978). But Robert Smith had several projects and amongst them one called Cult Hero. Others:
     The Obtainers
     Cult Hero
     The Associates
     Siouxsie and the Banshees
     The Glove
And Also the Trees ("The Pear Tree" remix)
     Cranes ("Jewel" remix)

What was the Cult Hero project?
In 1979, The Cure got together with a bunch of friends and decided to make a single.  They called themselves "Cult Hero".  Led by a postman from Horley, England named Frank Bell, as well as Simon Gallup, Porl Thompson, and Robert's two sisters, they recorded "I'm a Cult Hero" and "I Dig You".  It was a one-off effort.  They played one show in March 1980.
(see Cure faq from alt.music.the-cure usenet newsgroup)

http://tinyurl.com/gulz

I summed up a bit what it was said in the book about "I'm a Cult Hero":
"1979 the band began to feel that enjoyment was disappearing from the experience, so they took a break through the summer. Robert didn't remain idle, instead he worked with new music and set up his own local label, Dance Fools Dance, with the help of Ric Gallup. This is when Robert recorded the off single with local postman FranK Bell called "I'm a Cult Hero"." (page 48)

>Anyway, I know these are Cure songs and they're from very >early in their career, but where can they be found (besides >going online and searching for them)? Are they B-sides

*Foxy Lady -
from the album "THREE IMAGINARY BOYS" (1979)

*I dig You & I'm a Cult hero -
from Cult Hero project 7'' vinyl featuring  both songs (1979)

now, I suspect that your friend recorded all 2 songs from some kind of compilation. But i can't see to find the name anywhere. So either I try to find online later (I'm curious too) or I will ask my sister in Brazil, she is obssessed by The Cure and is even a member of the huge brazilian fan-club.
I hope this info help in spite of not answering your cruxial question, LOL
take care!

Wow!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!! It looks like I've got some searching to do! (Or I might just be happy with my trusty little mix tape. :)) Unfortunately, my friend who had made me the tape and I lost touch years ago, and I have no idea where she is these days. :( (Lesson to be learned: "Hold on to your friends." - Morrissey. ...OOPS! How dare I mention Morrissey in a Cure thread! Such blasphemy! ;D)

"I Dig You" is always good for a laugh, and I've always really liked "I'm A Cult Hero."

Thanks again!

Hey girl, you're welcome! I love doing those searches, keeps my mind busy from odd crashing thoughts.
Anyway, I haven't found the compilation containing all songs you mentioned. I tried to call my sister because I need to talk about some stuff, so I could ask her about this too, but she wasn't at home. If i find out this mistery I'll let you know!

yes hold on to your friends, because we only give value to family & friends when they're far away or they're gone. Sadly I discovered this too late. Don't let it happen!
Your friend, might miss you! If she didn't got the songs from a compilation, maybe she even compiled the songs herself, from the Cult Hero 7'' recording and from Cure's first album.

LOL and Morrissey & Bob... well I can't say cat fight, because doesn't apply, but yeah, that was blasphemy!! HEHE
take care!

All I know about where my friend got the songs from is, I believe they were from her boyfriend at the time. (They looked like two Robert Smith wannabe twins. Disturbingly adorable. :D) Where HE got them is beyond me, and I didn't particularly like him, so I tried to go out of my way not to talk to him unless he spoke to me. Typical high school stuff.  ::)

Haven't Moz and Bob made up? I heard that they did, bit I do remember Robert's quote from long ago: "If Morrissey says not to eat meat, then I'll eat meat, because I hate Morrissey." I hated him for that, but I still like both bands and never understood the whole Smiths vs. Cure thing. They're both great bands, and people should accept that and not put them in competition with each other! The Smiths would win anyway, because they have the better singer/songwriter. So there. :P Hehehehe ;D

Hi All,

It's been a while since I posted but I happened to find this thread from last year and thought I'd let you know that The Cure is coming out with a 4CD B-sides collection next week called Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities 1978-2001. I'm pretty sure the tracks you were asking about are on there!

OK, I have to jump in here, & sorry if this is off topic...
Where is there a rundown/listing of the tracks on the CD's? Is this a US release or import?
The reason I'm asking is I used to have a copy of Happily Ever After. This was a combo album of the Cures Faith & Seventeen Seconds, but I had the tape (cassette) and it had 3 tracks that weren't on Faith or Seventeen Seconds.
I'm not even sure of the tracks because the tape was lost in a flood of my basement room while I was away at college in '89(lost a lot of my music collection) :(.
Happily Ever After is long gone "out of print" but need to find and remember the tracks that were on the special cassette only version.
Any help?

By the way I've always considered 'New Day' my favorite Cure song. Simply mind-blowing!!!

I've wanted a CD copy for years but the only place I was aware of it existing was as a vinyl B-Side which I'm not willing to try to find! Or on the 'Standing on the Beach' cassette with most of the B-sides on the 1st disc here, which I don't need another copy of!

My local radio station sometimes play rare songs from The Cure.

A few weeks ago, I heard their cover of Joy Divion's "Love Will Tear Us Apart".  :)

What irks me is the the cassette version of "Standing on a Beach" had the "Unavailable B-sides," but they didn't include the B-sides on the CD version!  >:(
They could have, but they didn't!
I just took burned side B of my cassette onto CD.  It sounds good enough for me.  Some of those b-sides, such as "Love Cats" B-side "Mr. Pink Eye," are easy enough to come by, but others, like my favorite "A Few Hours After This," are exceedingly rare.  I'm not willing to hunt down and shell out for that particular "In Between Days" single.  The CD-R I made is good enough for me.
I have a copy of "Happily Ever After," or has that question been answered?

Actually the B-sides on the Standing on a Beach cassette are what comprise the majority of the 1st CD in this new boxed set! I've been waiting for those to come out on CD!
