Subject: Most Underrated 80's Group/Artist

Written By: Absolutely_Vile on 07/20/03 at 11:45 p.m.

Who do you think is the most underrated 80's artist? Who do you feel didn't get the recognition they deserved? (Thanks to Criz for inspiring me! :D)

At the moment I can think of two examples:

A Flock Of Seagulls

This is a group who were known (in North America anyway)more for singer Mike Score's original hairstyles and one song, "I Ran (So Far Away)". But what about other songs? "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)"..."Space Age Love Song"....great songs as well.

Baltimora

Known only for his song, "Tarzan Boy," but the album it's on is great! Really worth a listen if you can find it. It's called Living In The Background.

Tell me what you think....:)

For major acts, I'd say the Fixx, with a 2nd place for Greg Kihn.
Other ones that should have had more merit include:
Heaven 17
Hayzi Fantayzee
Red Rockers
Monroes
Altered Images
Gary Numan/Tubeway Army (especially in the US!)
Bronski Beat/Communards (same comment)

Sure thing hun :) Happy to be of some help! :D

I think these artists didn't get the recognition they deserved:

~ Squeeze (Always seem to be forgotten!)
~ Go Go's (In the UK mainly beacuse they didn't get any top 40 hits in the 80s! Shocking!)
~ The Jam (In the US very few realise how big they were in the UK in the late 70s , early 80s. One of my favourite bands.)
~ Berlin (They're only really known for 'Take My Breath Away', but 'The Metro', 'Pleasure Victim' etc.. are great tracks)

Good one,Criz! The Jam were vastly underrated in America. They were an excellent British late 70s/early 80s punk/mod band with one of the best socially themed lyrics ever.In their native UK they've reached enormous popularity having four No.1 singles and one No.1 album while NME Magazine's readers voted them The Best Band in their year-end polls during that time regulary.
The reason why they couldn't make it in America lies in a fact that US musical market was flooded by all that AOR,Hard'n'Heavy and Mainstream Rock artists back then and bands like The Jam just couldn't find their place under American sun at all.
I also think Paul Weller's next group The Style Council is equaly underrated. They made some of the finest 80s pop songs."Ever Changing Moods"(1984) and "Shout To The Top"(1985) for instance.
Level 42 really is an underrated group. They possesed much more songwritting quality than Duran Duran,Spandau Ballet and Wham! together.I like their early period(1980-1983) the best when they were one of the best white Funk groups around.Their 1981's selftitled debut is awesome."Love Games","Turn It On" and "Starchild" make me dance while its instrumentals like "Heathrow" and "42" are splendid. And Mark King surely is one of the best bass players of all time.

Others I find underrated are:
New Order - yes!
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
Heaven 17 - good call,DJ Dave!
and
Madness - especially in the US

Sort of.

That's all I could think of right now.

Very true. 'Walls Come Tumbling Down' is my favourite from them. However, I do think the Jam were better :)

And I completly agree with your other choices also :)

The Jam, what a good group, "That's Entertainment," brings back memories of being a lonely punk in Seattle.
