Subject: When did the 80's begin and the 70's End?

Written By: Jason on 07/21/03 at 07:45 p.m.

Long before people debated whether the early 1990's were still the 80's or not, there was the topic of the 70's-80's.

So I think it's fair to revisit this old topic.  When do you think the 80's really began and the 70's ended?  Sure disco may have been dead in 1980, and MTV may have premiered in 1981, but there is no denying a STRONG late 70's vibe in those years.  The influence of the 70's is very apparent through a lot of the early 80's actually.

My opinion?  It was never really the 80's until sometime in 1982.  And even then, there was still a lot of 70's still around, but enough 80's to counter it.

I might be way off, but to me the 80's did not include the latter part of the decade when you had rap. To me the 80's were a blend of late 70's and early 80's. I listened to music like the Bee Gee's and Pat Benitard, and Duran Duran. Those were the kinds of bands I listened to (although less of the Bee Gee's, but then again, Queen was popular in the 80's too). I think the 80's died right around the time rap music came out. Shows from the late 70's that blended into the 80's would also count as 80's culture in my book, such as Battlestar Galactica and the Dukes of Hazzard.

When I look back at the pop culture of the 80s, it seems like the 80s really became the 80s in 1984. I feel the same with the 90s, in that the 90s still had some 80s holdovers, but really became the 90s in 1994.

I think the '80s became the '80s in 1983 or '84. That was when the fashion from the '70s was starting to become '80s. People got rid of their straitened flat hair for more crimps and volume. Look at the fashion in the movies also. E.T. was made in 1982, but the fashion in the movie was still '70s. I think after the movie Dirty Dancing, people started wearing '80s fashion.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 80's started at 12:00 A.M,
January 1, 1980 and ended at 12:59.59 January 31, 1989.

If a time fell before those times it was the 70's and if it fell after those times it was the 1990's. Simple

In the movie "Prom Night", that is a perfect example of an early 80s film with still 70s style. When I first saw the movie on tv, I thought it was maybe a late 70s film, but it was from 1980.
To me I think the 80s really began in 82 because of fashion, music, and technology.

Didn't you already post this?  ???

It is true that technically from a calendar standpoint the 80's began on January 1st, 1980.  But culturally, stuff like this doesn't always follow it to the exact day and hour.  It's not like the 70's just magically screeched to a hault and disappeared once 1980 rolled around.  Ronald Reagan wasn't even sworn into the office of the President yet in 1980. Like I said, it is also true that disco died out in 1980 and MTV came out in 1981.  And I'm sure there were plenty of people in 1980 and 1981 walking around saying, "say groovy man, these are the 80's!". But most everything else from a pop cultural stand point seemed stuck in the late 70's.  Bell bottoms, that shaggy and wavy blow dry hair, CB radios, Atari (which really was more of a 70's video game then an 80's one), CHiPs, Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, and many songs with a strong disco sound were still around in the early 1980's.  In my opinion, the early 80's were not fully out of the 70's. The early 80's were a mixture of what we would come to know as "the 80's", and A LOT of left over 70's stuff.

If people can insist that the early 1990's were a rerun of the late 80's and that the early 00's are a rerun of the late 90's.....then why is it so off base to say that the early 80's still had a VERY HEAVY 70ish influence?

I just don't think the 80's were fully formed until 1983, or maybey even 1984.  But I'm willing to accept as early as 1982 being the 80's, because there was enough 80's culture around by '82 to counter the 70's, for you to reasonably call that year the 80's.

Dirty Dancing was in 87. Thats too far off for the starting point for the decade of the 80's. The 80's became the 80's in 83 from my calculations with Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album which came out in 82 though. There was still touches of 70's in 81 with disco/funk like Earth Wind & Fire, Sos Band, Kool & The Gang(were big in the late 70's/early 80's), and Donna Summer. I think by 80 70's shows like "Whats Happenin" and "Sanford & Sun" were off the air by 1980-1981 at least. In 78-99 "Different Strokes" and "Facts of Life" debut but they were truly 80's shows. "Whats Happenin" tried to come back in 85 as "Whats Happenin Now" but that didn't pan out. As for the 90's 90's didn't start until 92 not 94 like somebody said before. The true 90's period was like 92-98. When Britney Spears first song came out that was the end of the 90's. I'm more in touch with the 90's than the 80's because I'm in my early 20's but than again I feel more in touch with the 80's than the 00's right now pop culture wise.

I've always been curious...but why is it everytime I talk to someone about the 80's...they act as if my lifestyle or culture didn't even exist??

Not only does rap music originate from the 70's...hiphop and electron were in fairly high demand, from Herbie Hancocks "Rockit" to Paul Hardcastles early electro. Dare I say it, yes even hiphop used electronic instruments long before your Duran Durans and your Wham pop idols.

Personally, I moved to the United States in 1981 and within the first year I joined with a breakdance crew...I've followed hiphop every since, and right now I literally have 100s of hiphop records dating to the early 80s...which btw, I will be playing some at the local mall this weekend for a breakdance exhibition.

Sorry people, but the 80s were about more than just badly dressed white peole who couldn't dance to the "disposable" pop music that dominated the innovative Top 40 airwaves.

No disrespect to you guys...but sometimes it just pisses me off.

Hip-Hop came along and hit big in like 87-88 period with like Public Enemy, and Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince. I mean the early to mid 80's you had New Wave bands dominating. I think like 83 Grand Master Flash and Furious Five did have hits like "White Lines" and "The message" but it really wasn't until the late 80's when hip-hop hit big.  As far as comparing Duran Duran to Wham. Wham had a few alright songs like "Everything She Wants" and "Wonderful Christmas Time". Wham was basically a stepping stone for George Michael's solo career. Duran Duran made alot classic songs.

I whould say it is hard to define the 70s and 80s in terms of music styles. This is how I see the musical transitions from the late 70s to the late 90s

Late 70s - Disco and punk

Early 80s - Disco, new wave and punk

Mid 80s - Pop

Late 80s - Pop, hip-hop, indie and rap

Early 90s - Pop, dance, indie and rap

Mid 90s - Pop, dance, indie and rap

Late 90s - Pop, dance, indie and rap

What people post is what they experianced. In my neighborhood, most of the people were conservative, Ronnie was president, there was a cold war, most kids learned how to hide under a school desk when the nuclear alarm went off, and we did not have MTV until the late 80s.

I was not saying Rap is a horrible instrument for music or commentary. I was just saying in the 80s rap was not popular for me or those who lived in my neighborhood, and what I associate most strongly with the 80s were the innocent times, fun comedy movies, pop music like duran duran, baseball, apple pie, baseball cards, good american fun. By the time rap came around to my neighborhood, there was no innocence or ignorance left. The blinds were removed.

Coming from a person who didn't experience the early part of the era firsthand, I'd say that the 80s started when MTV was first aired in '81. By then, the 70s fashions were slowly disapearing, and the new wave signiture sound was becoming more and more apparent. If you look at 1980, such a range of different musical styles are hitting the top 10 (British charts especially), most of which still sounding a little '70s'. My comments are coming from a 'popular culture' perspective and nothing more. Music and fashion became more and more entertwined beacuse of the new music video meduim, and the rise of MTV definitly signals the begining of the 80s in my opinion.

For me, the 1980's was a mindset.  For me, it was when my perception changed about how I viewed the world.  And I can still remember where I was when it happened.

It was the night of December 8, 1980.  I was driving in the snow, and a news report came on saying that John Lennon was shot.

On that night, I realized that the 70's were over.  A month and a half later, the hostages were released from Iran, and we had a new president.

SO for me, the 70's ended in December 1980, and by the end of January 1981, the 80's started in reality.

The 80s started at in 1980 and the 70s ended in 1979. Like, duh! But I would have to say 80s style started creeping in about the same time I started hanging out at the Galleria with my friends which was about 1983/1984.

That's just my opinion though.   :)

I may be going against the grain, but I take the view that the 80s started before the calendar said it did, not after.

Since I was born in 1962, a lot earlier than almost all of you, I was a lot more conscious of the demarcation between the late 70s and the mid 70s.  In music, the disco backlash had begun, and punk was already morphing into new wave.  Fashion was seriously different; preppiness had begun to set in to replace the excesses of the 70s.

I think you answered your own question.  I believe when MTV first aired on August 1, 1981 the whole landscape changed.  If you look at the songs that charted prior to that, you still found a lot of 70s carryover flavor to them.  Like any decade, it took the adults a little longer to come around.  Geez, some people I know still dress like they're from the 80s.  Really.

About the time that MTV debuted, we were all ready for something new.  The music, movies, fashion, advertising, TV, and how we spent our spare time were all changed drastically beginning on that day.  Not to mention that radio had to do a complete 180 degree turn from where they were.

I personally began listening to music (and buying records and tapes) of bands that I never knew existed. Who are The Clash and why haven't I heard of them until now?  As the 80s continued, we all started looking for new music and trends and no longer settled for what radio, TV, and our own little part of the world dictated.

That's when I think the 80s began...

You clearly were born in the 80's.  Only someone who was born in the 80's would think that the decade started in 1987, or whenever it was they started to have any kind of memories.

MTV came out in 1981, and Reagan was President....that was CLEARLY "the 80's", that was not a 70's culture.  Just because the 1982 E.T. movie had some late 70ish looking fashions doesn't make that the 70's.  There were left over fashions and hairstyles from the late 70's here and there, but I consider that the 80's.  Honestly, I even consider 1980 to be the 80's.  The core years, or true or "real" 80's were from 1980/'81 to 1986/'87.

I'm not 43 years old or anything, I was born in 1978 and I'm 25 years old.  But I remember what years were the true 80's and what was the late 80's or early 90's.  The core years of the 90's were pretty much exactly the same as the pattern of the 80's, 1991 to 1996/'97 were the "real 90's".  Nirvana burst onto the scene in 1991.  And 1990 was a year that was stuck in limbo, being neither part of the 80's or the 90's.

And on another note, the 90s didn't really start till 1991
                             the 70s, 1975 (that's what a history prof said)
                             the 60s, 1963
the 50s, 1955 (when "Rock Around the Clock Came Out)

and I guess 00, 2002 (after 9'11) but it's still to early to determine.

To me the 1980's kicked off at midnight on August 1, 1981 when MTV hit the airwaves. It really changed the face of tv as we knew it and it gave artists a new way to get their music heard when radio was reluctant to play it (i.e., radio would'nt play Duran Duran at first until their videos became so popular)

Hi, this is my first post here.  I'm 35, so I spent my high school years in the thick of the 80's.  I lived in New Orleans from '81-85, then moved to Philadelphia and graduated from high school there in '86.

It's hard to talk about the 80's or any other decade in terms of an era with a specific beginning and ending.  The 80's as a pop culture era might be somewhat of an exception because of MTV.  I can't say more than that, because I think of the 80's in terms of the stuff I was into at the time.  Each one of us had different circumstances and priorities, so the line is obviously different for each of us.

Yeah..the 80's were the 70's with a tad more hairspray. Depending on wherer you lived...typically the 70's were 'punk' 'fashion' and 'music'..the eighties was basically just an extension of the 70's..towards the end it was more rap.

Around the time of the birth of the New Romantic movement and the release of the UK singles for Visage "Fade To Grey" and Spandau Ballet "To Cut A Long Story Short".  Late fall/ early winter of 1980.  The decade was over for me sometime in mid 1990 with the release of Poesie Noire "Pity For The Self".  It was starting to die in 1987 when I started jamming to House music, but the Post Modern and Industral sounds kept it going for me into the spring of 1990.

Looking back, I feel the every year is different. Sure, there are some cultural and popular attributes that survive. But there is always something each year that sets it apart from the previous. Therefore, I feel the 80s started on January 1, 1980 :)
