Subject: One hit wonders that were GOOD

Written By: dugn on 07/23/03 at 10:37 a.m.

I thought I'd see what kind of a response I'd get on a post of favorite One-Hit Wonders (songs or videos) that were actually really good songs (or videos).

I know for a lot of one-hit wonders, the artists actually did a few other songs that former DJ's/music addicts would be able to pull out of the woodwork and claim they really aren't one hit wonders - but that aside: What song or videos really stand out as pretty much one-hit wonders, but they were GOOD songs (PacMan Fever by Buckner & Garcia doesn't count  :P ) !

Here's a few I thought of...

Trans-X - Living on Video (good song, bad video!)
Strawberry Switchblade - Since Yesterday (good song and video)
Talk Talk - It's my Life (why do I still love this song after all these years?)
Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion
Red Flag - Russian Radio
Planet P - Why Me
Love and Rockets - So Alive
The Beloved - Sweet Harmony (interesting video)

OK, I am a self-professed music geek, but...looking through the lists in this thread, I've noticed several bands that were not one-hit wonders, even in North America!! (Well, not here in Canada anyway!) What about these other hits by aformentioned artists:

Talk Talk - what about "Life's What You Make It" and "Dum Dum Girl?"
Love & Rockets - what about "No New Tale To Tell," "Ball Of Confusion," and "Yin & Yang And The Flowerpot Men?"
Eddy Grant - what about "Gimme Hope Jo'anna" and "I Don't Wanna Dance?"
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - what about "Two Tribes" and "The Power Of Love?"
A-Ha - what about "The Sun Always Shines On TV," "Hunting High And Low," and "The Living Daylights" (from the James Bond film of the same name)?
Falco - what about "Der Kommissar" and "Vienna Calling?"

And finally...

Thomas Dolby - what about "Hyperactive?"

Weren't these hits too? Most of these were played quite a bit! (Talk Talk's "It's My Life" and "Life's What You Make It" were played so often on Much Music that I thought they were Canadian!! I only much later found out they were British. :D)

You see - that's some of the benefits of not living in the US:  You get to hear a lot more about other bands.  In all honesty, I was a radio DJ in the 80s and even though I knew most of those bands had other hits, I also knew that most of them were never big deals in the US.

Back in the 80s, I imported music from Canada, Germany and the UK.  Now I fly to Germany and spend a week there watching VIVA and MTV UK and listening to Munich radio and come back with $500 worth of new CDs and videos every time.

So - as sad as it sounds Vile, us Ami's never got to hear the rest of those songs (even though there are a priviledged few who knew they were out there!).

Cheers - and keep 'em coming!

I'm from the US and know some radio stations play hits from the 1980's that aren't popular in the US.

And the "Living In Oblivion" compilation CDs also have Euro hits.
Along with "Best of New Wave" & "More New Wave Hits" DVDs.

Two examples of great bands that only have 1 hit in the US:

Spandau Ballet "True"
Madness "Our House"

And some from the US that should've gotten more recognition:
Devo "Whip It"
Faith No More "Epic" (The album came out in 1989, though the song's from 1990)

Hmmm... I dunno... Over the course of 15 years and 10 different stations, I played at least six or seven songs by Talk Talk which were all on some official playlist---  I think we have to differentiate between a one hit wonder according to American Top-40 Billboard Charts or some other form of calculation (such as Radio & Records, BDS, CMJ, etc.)  These kinds of threads bring up the same debate.   ;)

Also what about the single "Talk Talk" released in '82 which was played quite a bit on MTV. Here is a list of what charted for Talk Talk in the U.S. BillBoard charts. FoxVox is,as always, correct in saying these threads do bring up the same debate which can be fun!  8)

"Tarzan Boy" or whatever it was!  Can't recall the act.

"You Spin Me Round" God I love that!  (When I think about it, I absolutely LOVE most of the 1-hits!)

A-Ha doesn't count as a 1-hit wonder.  They had others, just not as big as the break-in hit.

Falco had "Vienna Calling", not just "Rock Me Amadeus".  And it wasn't he who did "Der Commisar" - that was a 1-hit wonder from another band.

Spandau Ballet had "Gold".

Didn't Club Nuveau have another hit?  I LOVE their "Lean on Me" (don't like the original - too slow, boring, sleepy), but thought there was another song out there.

And I still wonder what the $%#@ is "In a Big Country"!

Falco did do "Der Kommissar" first...in German, in 1983. A group called After The Fire loosely translated it into English, and covered it a few years later.

Hard to think of him as a one hit wonder when you look at the number of albums he put out, and the singles that were very popular long before this awful song - "High on Emotion" and "Spanish Train" spring to mind.

As for Suzanne Vega, see my earlier response - maybe radio overplayed "Luka", but I did hear "Tom's Diner" almost as often (especially after the drumbeat was added).

Cutting Crew

If it's the same "Listen To The Radio" I'm thinking of (and since we're both Canadian)...is it the one that goes:

Throw off your coat
Pick up my note
Put another coffee on
Lie down on the bed
Lay back your head
Smoke another cigarette
And listen to the radio...ahhhhhhhh...

...or something like that? If so, then it's by a group called Pukka Orchestra. They're Canadian, I believe, and yes this was their only hit. :)

Don Williams is old, isn't he?? I think he was around in the 50's. :)

Sisters of Mercy? A one hit wonder?
This Corrosion isn't there highest ranking song either.

"This Corrosion" made it to No. 38 on the Hot Dance Chart.
"Lucretia My Reflection" made it to No. 30 on the Hot Dance Chart.
"Dominion" also made it to No. 30.
"More" made it to NO. 1 on the Modern Dance Chart
"Detonation Boulevard" made it to No. 17 on the Modern Dance Chart.
The Album "Floodlands" made it to No. 101 on Billboards top 200 albums.
The Album "Vision Thing" made it to No. 136 on Billboards top 200 albums.

Sorry, but I am a Sisters of Mercy fan and were shocked to see them called a One Hit Wonder.  Heres a one hit wonder who had a No. 1 on the UK Dance Charts in the late 80s but never made another song.

It was?? I've never heard of it, and I listened to the radio incessantly in the 80's. :) Maybe I need to hear it...

That's the one!! Thanks Vile.  I did manage to find it on Kazaa but I kept getting the old 50's sound, until I got the right one.  :P  I've been skeptical that Don Williams was the original artist.

There's some interesting stuff here owzat.  :)

Quoting:Assembly - Never NeverEnd Quote

This band comprised of 'Wobbly Voice' Feargal Sharkey after his Undertones days and Vince Clarke after Depeche Mode. I guess this served as a vehicle for both of them before they decided what to do next.

Quoting:Black - Wonderful LifeEnd Quote

This song is so wonderful. The vocal talents of Black are rich and deep. However, I think he had a couple of minor hits after this.

Quoting:Bow Wow Wow - Go Wild In The CountryEnd Quote

They also had the regrettable C30 C60 C90 Go! An attempt to cash in on the cassette player revolution.

Quoting:Bruce Hornsby And The Range - The Way It IsEnd Quote

I think they had a few hits. 'Mandolin Rain' was one of them. A great band that deserved more recognition. 'The Way it is' is an unbelievable song!

Quoting:Don Henley - Boys Of SummerEnd Quote

Also did 'All she wants to do is dance'.

Quoting:Giorgio Moroder & Phil Oakey - Together In Electric DreamsEnd Quote

Phil Oakey was the lead singer of Human League, Giorgio Moroder dabbled with keyboards - Great song. It certainly is a one hit collaboration.

Quoting:Jane Wiedlin - Rush HourEnd Quote

Formerly of The Go-Gos with Bellinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin couldn't get the same success.

Quoting:John "Cougar" Mellencamp - Jack 'N' DianeEnd Quote

Also did 'Hurt so good'. Great song.

Quoting:Jona Lewie - Stop The CavalryEnd Quote

With it's interesting bass, Stop the Cavalry was good stuff. Has had the top twenty hit 'You'll always find me in the kitchen at Partys' and was also with the band 'Terry Dactyl and The Dinosaurs'.

Quoting:Limahl - Neverending StoryEnd Quote

Had a few minor hits.

Quoting:Matthew Wilder - Break My Stride
Men Without Hats - Safety Dance
Mental As Anything - Live It Up
Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok
Neil - Hole In My Shoe
Opus - Live Is Life
Patrick Swayze - She's Like The Wind
End Quote

Brilliant songs.  :D

Quoting:Phil Lynott & Gary Moore - Out In The FieldsEnd Quote

A one hit collaboration (I believe). Both have had hits. Lynott with the band 'Thin Lizzy'.

Quoting:Power Station - Some Like It HotEnd Quote

Also had a hit with the cover of T-Rex's 'Get it on' but renamed it 'Bang a gong' (huh?)

Quoting:Starlight - Numero UnoEnd Quote

This dance classic deserves a mention, Owzat. A great hit in 1989.

Quoting:Tenpole Tudor - The Swords Of A Thousand Men
End Quote

I think they had a couple of hits. The lead singer these days is more known for hosting 'The Crystal Maze'.

Quoting:Trio - Da Da DaEnd Quote

This is what I call a one hit wonder! Trio were brilliant with their small keyboard and clinky beat.

Quoting:Wax - Bridge To Your HeartEnd Quote

Was the result after 10cc split up and featured Andrew Gold. Have you seen the video? Beautiful.

"Marlena on the Wall" Suzanne Vega
End Quote

Suzanne was hardly a "one hit wonder".  Off the top of my head, I can think of 2 more hits that she had.

Tom's Diner.  THis song was very annoying, with it's "do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do", but it was a big hit in the late 1980's.

Luka.  This was a very disturbing but moving song about domestic abuse.  "My name is Luka, I live on the second floor".

I'm shocked and outraged no one mentioned Survivor's Eye Of A Tiger.

BTW - Alphaville were NOT a one hit wonder. What about the brilliant Forever Young?!

People, people, people!!!

I'm shocked and awed that none of you true 80s audiophiles have mentioned:

Heaven 17 - Let Me Go
The Polecats - Make A Circuit With Me
The System - Don't Disturb This Groove
Yaz - Don't Go (yes, I know that separately they weren't one hit wonders)

Oh, there's so much more!!!

:o)
