Subject: Quiz/game shows you watched as a kid.

Written By: Devon Girl on 07/26/03 at 01:28 p.m.

Just thought it would be an idea to find out what TV quiz/game shows were on in the 80's.

I can just about remember "321". What was it all about?
The questions/puzzles  always seemed way hard and what was the point of the Dusty Bin character? ???

Someone enlighten me please?! :)

My favourite quiz show was 'Catchphrase'. Roy Walker was the man. "Say what you see" - It must be the first quiz show  to use just computer graphics. The star prize was usually a trip to Bali.

Bullseye was great. It was a darts based quiz that featured Jim Bowen (who always looks the same age - about 65). I think I can rattle off Jim's phrases. . .

"Super smashing great"
"Keep out of the black, stay in the red. Nothing in this game for two in a bed"  ;D
"If you lose, all you get is B.F.H - Bus fare home."
"Look at what you could've won!"

My favorites:

Price is Right
$25,000 Pyramid
Press Your Luck
Joker's Wild

I remember a great 321 out-take when Mr. Rodgers started his trademark hand-movement forwards. Work it out... ;D

Used to watch many of them. Does anyone remember Blockbusters? It was hosted by Bill Cullen (actually, I think most game shows were hosted by Bill Cullen.  ;))

okay, I'm hoping maybe someone can help me with this.  I'm trying to remember the name of this kid's game show that used to be on in the late 80s, maybe early 90s.  I thought I remember the host being Willie Aames, Buddy from Charles in Charge, but after looking into that I found he hosted The Krypton Factor and that's not the show I'm referring to.  The only things I remember about the show were that there were 3 contestants and they each sat in a recliner-like chair with a little tv screen next to it that was sometimes used to illustrate a part of the question.  Also, by the host was a little treasure chest on a podium, but I forget what the point of that was.  If anyone actually has a clue what I'm talking about I would REALLY appreciate some help on this!!

no it wasn't remote control, but like, if remote control was for teenagers, this show was the 8 year olds version of it.

I thought it was Jim Lang who hosted that show.  :-/ Perhaps they had more than one host...

Match Game was always my favorite game show.  I thought Gene Rayburn had so much personality (compared to many of the other hosts of that time).  :D

It seems to me CeramicsFantastic that there was a British and an American version. The British version had Jim Bowen. A bit like Blockbusters, in America it was Bill Cullen, in Britain it was Bob Holness (up until recently).

I used to watch Match Game as a kid and thought it was great. In the last year, I watched the old shows on Gameshow Network and didn't realize all the jokes that I missed as a kid. They went right over my head at the time. I think it is much funnier as an adult because I now "get" the jokes.

It's funny you should say that, because the exact same thing happened to me.  I started watching it again a few years ago (1999, I believe) and was just now understanding most of the humor on the show.  ;D 8)

I loved Match Game, Charles Nelson Reilly was a riot!
I also watched a game who's name I am now drawing a blank on.  It wasn't The Price Is Right (unless it turned into it later)but the contestants had to try and match prizes and many in the audience came dressed in costumes.
Also Pyramid, Jokers Wild and the Newlywed show.
