Subject: The Transformers: The Movie (1986)

Written By: Jason on 07/26/03 at 09:22 p.m.

Before Ninja Turtles, before Power Rangers, before Pokemon, and before any Beast Wars or Generation 2 and 3 nonsense,.....there was.....

The Transformers.

These guys are as synonmous with the 80's as Miami Vice and Michael Jackson.

The movie came out in 1986.  I figured this film deserved a thread of it's own. Nearly every kid cried when Optimus Prime was killed.  And we all gasped when Galvatron/Megatron finally killed Starscream.  And remember how cool it was when Unicron transformed into his own robot?  It was loud, it was loaded with unnecessary violence, and it featured a trashy 80's heavy metal soundtrack.  And the parents hated it.  All the more reason for a kid in 1986 to love it!

The animation is sometimes excellent and sometimes tacky, but overall it was good enough.  The movie was set in the year 2005....oh man that sounded so far away back in the 80's.

ahhh the memories...

Begin the discussion on this cult favorite.

I own it.

It's definitely a "must have" for any 80's fan. It's decent for it's time and explains some of the changes/differences seen in today's transformers.

My only problem with this movie is that the soundtrack tunes used throughout the entire movie have lyrics. This sucks in this particular case because the singing is so loud that it overpowers the dialogue to the point to where you can barely hear what the characters are saying. The tunes are decent and all, but it would have served them better to leave the tunes with lyrcs out of the parts of the movie containing character dialogue. They should have planned for some rockin' instrumentals instead.

Maybe it's because i was stoned, but i had trouble following the storyline :-/  I liked the tunnel-animation bits at the beginning though.  I had no idea "Weird Al" was on the soundtrack until i saw the film.

Yeah, I can't believe they put his track "Dare to be Stupid" in there. Nowadays, that would probably be edited out or switched to something more politically correct.

It wasn't politically correct?  Well, i spose you lot over there do have stricter ideas on P.C. than we do.

I don't know, perhaps I shouldn't generalize. Political correctness has gotten so out of hand here nowadays, I just wouldn't be surprised. That's all.

Whether The Transformers were politically incorrect or clean, fresh and wholesome. They kicked!!!! Any cartoon character wouldn't stand a chance against Optimus prime!!

And yes I also cried when Optimus was killed......  :'(

But anyway, good news, there are loads of fansites and from some of them you can even download episodes. Or just Kazaa, you can find a lot of transformer episodes there too.

I just watched it today. I think it is perhaps the only movie of a cartoon series to actually make a good movie. And when they came out with that new Transformers/He-man/Turtles, thats when I cried. Will the madness ever end!!

I was crying waterfalls when Optimus Prime died :'(.I was shocked to see them actually getting killed. The Stan Bush song "The Touch" still inspires me today.Too bad the show went down the toilet when Rodimus Prime took over.Even when Optimus came back the show lost "The Touch" that we fell in love with when it first came on.I own the video. When I saw the movie at the theater Spike said  "Oh s**t" when the ship he was in was being drawn in to Unicrons atmosphere but it wasnt said on the video anyone else rember that?

i do remember that one random swear word that spike uttered... i guess it was to give the movie "an edge"
i remember seeing the movie in the theater, there was a lot of cheering and crying amongst the kids as i recall.  when blaster let loose his own tapes to fight soundwave's, the whole theater erupted.   and of course optimus rolling down toward a decimated autobot city with "the touch" thundering in the background... one of the most inspirational 2 min of animation i've ever witnessed...

Yeah I remember the theater I was in also went wild back in 1986 when Blaster finally opened his tape compartment and ejected his own little guys out to fight Soundwave's dudes.  It was great to see Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage and Lazerbeak finally meet their Autobot matches.

The swear word is on the Canadian VHS version, and ofcourse it's on the DVD.  The DVD even labels the scene, "Swear Word".....they definately knew who their audience was.  Spike does indeed say "Oh Sh*t!", and every kid laughed and looked at each other at the same time.  Everyone was like, did we just hear that!!?  a cartoon character using bad language!?.  It was amazing because no one had ever seen something like that before.  And then when Optimus Prime and Megatron fought to the death, it was like being in a childhood nirvana.  It just wasn't going to get any better.

This thread has inspired me to watch the movie again, I haven't seen it in a couple of years.  But I'm setting aside a couple of hours later today to watch this 80s animation classic.
