Subject: Favourite 80's Japanimation!

Written By: Stinger on 07/30/03 at 12:05 a.m.

We all know there was a little thing called JAPANIMATION, or ANIME back in the 80's.  If you can recall any, post it here.

I do remember watching Voltron back then (LION AND VEHICLE!)

....Wow, a normal font!  :P

I remember seeing Akira when I was three. My older brothers were watching it. And I was astounded by the animation. It was so much better than He-Man drawings.

I'm sure we did a thread like this many moons ago...

...but darned if I'm gonna stop the fun :D

I suppose the 80s were responsible for the bubble economy in Japan, and therefore the huge increase in animation product being turned out.

Most notable was the rise of Studio Ghibli, creators of Princess Mononoke, the recently-released-on-DVD-in-the-USA Castle In The Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service and of course the Oscar-winning Spirited Away.

Perhpas even more significant was the visibility of anime outside the purely children's domain, with the bloody flick Ninja Scroll, the afore-mentioned post-apocalyptic AKIRA, and the even more influential Ghost in the Shell, which of course was a major inspiration for the recent Matrix franchise. This led to certain more recent experiments such as the computer-animated movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

And of course Disney's "The Lion King" shamelessly ripped off the old "Kimba the White Lion" anime, which was created by Osamu Tezuka, who also created Astro Boy.

Aficionados may note that in the original Astro Boy storyline, he was "born" on April 7, 2003. Besides the old TV series back in the 50s and 60s, there was another series made in the 80s.

I love anime!  It (usually) has more depth and detail than the animated movies that get made in here, even the ones they aim at kids.

My understanding of japanese animation is that they view it no differently than we do live movies and they use it the same way.  They have historical movies, romances, mysteries,(lets not mention the porn  :P)as well as the scifi that usually comes to our attention.

Growing up my favorites were anything with Captain Harlock, Voltron, Starblazers and Robotech, the first series, after that it kind of lost me and got boring.
