Subject: Tears For Fears

Written By: Boba Fett on 08/10/03 at 02:50 a.m.

So I've been wondering, and hopefully someone out there knows, what is being said on a particular Tears for Fears song.
On the album The Hurting, the song Mad World, at the very very end, it sounds like he's saying " Mad World, Mad World, Enlargen your world."
but enlargen isn't a word, it could be "enlarge, in your world" or even "enlarged in your world" but of either I cannot be sure. Does anyone know the correct lyrics?

Hiya Boba.

I've tried to work out where the 'enlargen your world' bit should be and have had no success. I've got the song lyrics here though.

<sigh>... This is my favourite Tears For Fears song and I did extensive research on this. Unfortunately, neither the lyric sheet on my The Hurting LP, nor most lyrics websites even go that far in the song to mention it. The only one I found was one that said, "enlarged in your world."

However... on their "best of" called Tears Roll Down: Greatest Hits 82-92, it does go that far, and they have it as "halogen world" or "halogeon world" or something like that. Could anyone who has a copy of it verify this for me? I, unfortunately, no longer have that CD.

Here's what it sounds like to me: "halogeon," which is what's written in the Tears Roll Down lyric sheet. I have no idea what it means though. I hope I've helped. I know for sure it's nothing like "enlarged in" or "enlargen." It just doesn't sound like it to me.

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

I am pleased to announce I have solved the mystery!!!!!! :D The word is, indeed, halogeon (pronounced either "halogen" or as it looks, like in "Mad World") and it's a type of light bulb.

Go here to see the source of my findings:

Just do an "Alt+F" search for "halogeon" on the website and you will discover all. It's some sort of weird messageboard discussing the song and all things related.

YAY!!!!!!

Thanks AV - I always thought they sang "illogical World" but I never felt comfortable with that...if you slur your words you can sort of make it fit "illogeeeurrlll World" or something like that. But now I know better.

BTW, have you heard the version of this song that's on the soundtrack to the movie "Donnie Darko" - I can't remember who it's by but it's a really good cover version.

No I haven't!! Actually, it's interesting that you mention that film because if you go to that link I posted, several people mention it. I've never heard of it before in my life. :D

Oh man the Donnie Darko version is great (there's several versions on the soundtrack).
Thank you for the insight, but now I have no idea what halogeon world is supposed to mean.
peculiar... I don't know if I'm happy about knowing now or not... damn.

I would assume it just means the same as if he would have sung 'Neon world' car headlights in the U.K are halogen as are street lights and most other external lights. The Hurting was a superb album in my oppinion they went pretty much down hill after then........

I believe it might be some deep, philosophical way of saying "modern world." :)

Is it possible that the lyric is "halcyon world"?

No, it isn't. Listen closely. I remember distinctly from when I had my Tears Roll Down: Greatest Hits 82-92 CD that it said, "halogeon world" on the lyric sheet. It's a type of light bulb. Makes sense to me! :)

People are talking about the same thing at Blog Like Whoa.  If you go here http://www.like-whoa.net/mt-comments.cgi?entry_id=262 and search "halogeon" you'll find a certain Michael asking whether anyone knows what it means.

What an awesome group they were. I love their songs. My mother has a few of their albums.

I saw where Tears for Fears came out with another greatest hits cd last week called Shout: The Very Best of Tears for Fears. I didn't buy it, because I have all their albums, but was wondering if anyone here picked it up, and what they thought of it.

Actually, the album came out the first week of August... I bought it on my birthday (august 6) as a new release, and it was the listening to it that prompted me to post this thread... it's a really good album, but it reminded me that I never knew what the hell they said... so here the thread runs full circle back to its origin.

I'd like to add it would be a good bit of esotericism (if that's a word!) if the lyric were 'Halcyon world'- Halcyon was the name of a popular benzodiazepine drug at that time. It may well have been prescribed to many 'mad' people at the time... would add that I agree that 'The Hurting' is the best TFF album ever. If I knew how to start threads on this thing (I seem to have a problem with this), I'd probably start one on 80's bands whose first album far outshone any others... ;)
