Hi guys!  It's time for a new list.  All of the songs listed below were #1 on this day for the years given.  Paul will be coming by later to post the list for the UK charts.  :D

1980 - Magic - Olivia Newton-John

1983 - Every Breath You Take - The Police
:P :P :P

Irritating

And here we go a-strollin' through the 80's...

1980 - Magic - Olivia Newton-John
Wonderfully mellow piece of work from that much-maligned film "Xanadu" (which I've actually seen!) - never hear it played much now...shame...

1981 - Endless Love - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
More films...Diana & Lionel's ballad is okay, but does tend to grind on a bit...quite a difficult song to sing - I've heard many laughable attempts on Karaoke nights...

1982 - Eye Of The Tiger - Survivor
And more films! Good, chunky stuff with that dangerous gee-tar riff...

1983 - Every Breath You Take - Police
Quite awesome stuff - all the more awesome when you discover that Sting claims to have woken up in the middle of the night and "wrote this in ten minutes" - not a bad ten minutes' work, I'd say...

1984 - Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jnr
Must-see film of the year...and also the subject of a lawsuit with Huey Lewis (although we didn't realise that at the time!) Still enjoyable in some strange way...

1985 - Shout - Tears For Fears
Everything-but-the-kitchen-sink production on this...works better when listened with the rest of the "Big Chair" album...goes on a bit...

1986 - Papa Don't Preach - Madonna
A bit of a weak-ish effort from Madge...not her best...

1987 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
The year U2 went global and huge (with songs to match) - I didn't (and still don't) really go much on this...

1988 - Roll With It - Steve Winwood
Although his most successful solo outing, it's not a patch on his earlier stuff...okay, though...

1989 - Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx
And finally...after 'waiting' long enough - Richard finally had his own huge UK success with this lovely ballad...although his first big UK breakthrough was as co-writer of "The Best Of Me" - another ballad which Sir Cliff Richard almost took to our top in June that year...

Quoting:
1981 - Endless Love - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
More films...Diana & Lionel's ballad is okay, but does tend to grind on a bit...quite a difficult song to sing - I've heard many laughable attempts on Karaoke nights...
End Quote

Then it might surprise you to hear that I sang this once in a karaoke club (many years ago) with a stranger and got lots of applause from the audience!  It's true!  :D

BTW, Paul, I'm waiting to see the lists of UK hits!  ;)

1980 - Magic - Olivia Newton-John
Fun song...loved the movie! :D

1981 - Endless Love - Lionel Richie & Diana Ross
I like this one...still!  Good song for karaoke clubs. ;D

1982 - Eye Of The Tiger - Survivor
This one is revved!  Loved it when it came out and still enjoy listening to it!

1983 - Every Breath You Take - The Police
Does anybody ever get tired of this song? ;)

1984 - Ghostbusters - Ray Parker, Jr.
This one was fun when it came out, but I quickly got burnt out on it.

1985 - Shout - Tears For Fears
Ah yes, Roland and Curt.  I loved these guys when they first burst onto the scene.  Listening to them now, though, I tend to think they were a very average band.

1986 - Papa Don't Preach - Madonna
I never liked this one very much.

1987 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
U2's pre-Joshua Tree work is the best, IMHO, but this song is pretty good.

1988 - Roll With It - Steve Winwood
Not bad.  I think I liked Steve best with the Spencer Davis Group.

1989 - Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx
As much as I love Richard Marx, this was not one of his best.
