Duran Duran - Simon was (and still is) hot!
Tears for Fears - also one of the best 80's bands overall
Split Enz - they should have had more hits in the States besides "I Got You"
Devo - they put out some of the most fun tunes

I was such an Adam Ant junky.
That stuff was some of the corniest rubbish ever written but I thought all so fabulous.
I still listen to it once in a while for kicks and not with a little embarrassment at how devoted I was to dear Adam!
If you've listen to the "Dirk Wears White Socks" album, you know what I mean! :P

Yeah, Adam Ant had some great tunes too, both with and without the Ants (One of my favorites is "Ant Music"); it's a shame to hear about what's happened to him in the past couple of years. I hope he can pull out of it and start making music again.

Hey, I used to LOVE it but even I can admit it was cheesey bad...but how about the "Strip" album?  The song "Baby Let Me Scream at You".
Here, allow me to quote some lyrics from it:
"Baby let me scream at you/ You can decline, of course/ I'm talking to you Girlfriend/ Give me some chili sauce"
I, to this day, hope that Adam meant that to be funny.

Devo?! They were techno/early industrial? What about my personal favourite, Depeche Mode? And there were loads of other tech/industrial groups mentioned in another thread about such groups! Devo may have been mentioned, but I don't see how they could be considered either techno or industrial.

As for your other categories...HUH?? New Wave is New Wave as far as I'm concerned. I never liked categories in the first place, but splitting them into sub-categories just makes things even more confusing. Music snobs use them all the time (and no, I'm not saying you are one!) but I just don't bother. Music is music...People are people...etc...

also good new wave techno pop - Modern English

New wave?  Good question, think "new wave" was more a commercialized trend, maybe an attempt to profit off the punk movement.  Vile is right, music is music, some 80s groups, coined as new wave, did have a certain style and look, maybe thier music could be called new wave with the synth, electronic sound popularized in the early 80s.   However, many groups of the period just looked regular, no spikes, fashion, synth, etc.  The music of the time was simply state of the art, modern rock of the 80s.

Lloyd Cole (Perfect Skin), Psychadelic (sp) Furs, and XTC, more of my faves.

The Cars are a great group too and they put out an awesome video in the 80's for "You Might Think"; I hear them played a lot on the "Classic Rock" station where I live, though they did have sort of a synth-pop sound going there.

XTC had a sound unique to themselves. I liked 'Senses working overtime' and 'Making plans for Nigel'.

Talking of which, has anybody seen the pop video to 'Making plans for Nigel'? It is about as New Wave as I imagine New Wave to be. Be careful while watching though. I reckon the garish computer graphics can trigger epilepsy - I know it gave me a headache watching it.  :-/

I knew THAT would get the attention of Mr. AFOS 1983.  Thanks for the "Space Age Love Song" graphic, Mr. AFOS 1983! AFOS 1981-1983 was definitively great New Wave!!

I wouldn't call Depeche Mode "light techno," and I they definitely belong under the rubric of "New Wave."  Furthermore, they were the first successful all-electronic pop band.  It wasn't until the 101 tour that you saw any guitars.

I listen to A LOT of electronic music, ranging from Milton Babbitt to Laurie Anderson.  I've heard all the old masters and most of the up and coming young composers of today. I can say with all certainty that Depeche Mode made some great electronic music.  People liked to write them off because they made pop songs and were adored by hysterical teenage girls.  You know who else that's true of? The Beatles.  If you forget about the bubblegum aspect of DM and listen to the sonic colors, textures, layering, rhythms, and diversity they produced, you will find some serious music.

It's hard for me to say which "New Wave" bands are my favorites because New Wave covers so many sounds and styles.  I like just about all the artists called "New Wave" in this thread, except Billy Idol.  I hate him.

I'd say the first artists heard the epithet "New Wave" applied to were Devo, Gary Numan, The B-52's, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, M, and Blondie.  Even there the definition is broad.

Don't forget Talk Talk.  Two artists similar to one of my favorites, Ultravox, were Visage and Peter Godwin.  Neither were nearly as good, but both had heavy synths and a flare for New Romantic drama.  Midge Ure produced a few of Godwin's songs, and I know Warren Cann, Ultravox's drummer, appeared on at least one.

They are a Portuguese band from the early 80's, that made an huge success not only in Portugal. Their look are very "new romantic", and the sound was great, in 1983 "the face" magazine call them one of the greatest bands of the moment in Europe!

There is nothing embarassing about Adam and the Ants in my opinion. I listen to the Ants a lot and I just recently got my roomate hooked on him now too. If you ask me, given the choice between Adam & the Ants and what artists do today, I think I'll decide to go and play my Prince Charming record again.
I am also a serious Duranie as my name suggests, they are definetly one of the best new wave bands and I am beyond thrilled that the five of them have reunited. I was hoping I would get to see that, being so young and all with only my old pinups to get me by.

Of course, in reality, picking the best new wave band is like asking some one to pick a favorite star out of the sky, some things just can't be done.I love it all but I am mostly all about Adam and the Ants and Duran Duran. ;D

Blancmange is one of my favorites.  I have most of their stuff.  They used a lot of synths, but also Indian instruments, woodwinds, and strings.  On their last album, "Believe You Me," (1985) from whence comes "Lose Your Love," they have over 20 guest musicians.  The album followed two very successful predecessors, "Happy Families," and "Mange Tout."  That's why the record company was happy to front them the money to make a big production.  Unfortunately, "Believe You Me" tanked, and that was the end of Blancmange.

It takes some searching to find their music on CD, but you can certainly find it online if you dig around.  The compilation CDs, "Second Helpings" and "Third Course" are more accessible, but I think the actual albums are worth the effort.

Stephen Luscombe did a CD with group West India Company for the Canadian dance troupe La La La Dance Steps.  The CD, "New Demons" (1989, EG) is excellent Indian-style pop music.  West India Company also appears on the b-side of the "Lose Your Love" 12" doing "Ave Maria."  Neil Arthur, the blonde one, had a couple of solo CDs, but they're really hard to come by.  I haven't heard either of them.  Neil works as a composer for the BBC, I forgot what Stephen does now.  They're still friends but don't work together, though we die-hard fans wish they would.  :'(

BTW, that "Lose Your Love" video appears in an '80s time travel movie, but I can't think of the title at the moment. ???

I think BJ was just referring to .38 Special as a band popular at the time, not necessarily New Wave.  .38 Special was definitely a quintessential good ole boys' band.
That does remind me of an animated feature by Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Lord of The Rings, New Mighty Mouse, Cool World), called "American Pop" (1980), in which he portrayed Bob Seger as "Punk."  Guffaw, get a clue, Ralph!

Here's a definition of New Wave from the All Music Guide site:

During the late '70s and early '80s, New Wave was a catch-all term for the music that directly followed punk rock; often, the term encompassed punk itself, as well. In retrospect, it's became clear that the music that followed punk could be divided, more or less, into two categories — post-punk and new wave. Where post-punk was arty, difficult, and challenging, new wave was pop music, pure and simple. It retained the fresh vigor and irreverence of punk music, as well as a fascination with electronics, style, and art. Therefore, there was a lot of stylistic diversity to new wave. It meant the nervy power pop of bands like XTC and Nick Lowe, but it also meant synth rockers like Gary Numan or rock revivalists like Graham Parker and Rockpile. There were edgy new wave songwriters like Elvis Costello, pop bands like Squeeze, tough rock & rollers like the Pretenders, pop-reggae like the Police, mainstream rockers like the Cars, and ska revivalists like the Specials and Madness. As important as these major artists were, there were also countless one-hit wonders that emerged during early new wave. These one-hit groups were as diverse as the major artists, but they all shared a love of pop hooks, modernist, synthesized production, and a fascination for being slightly left of center. By the early '80s, new wave described nearly every new pop/rock artist, especially those that used synthesizers like the Human League and Duran Duran. New wave received a boost in the early '80s by MTV, who broadcast endless hours of new wave videos in order to keep themselves on the air. Therefore, new wave got a second life in 1982, when it probably would have died out. Instead, 1982 and 1983 were boom years for polished, MTV-radio new wave outfits like Culture Club, Adam Ant, Spandau Ballet, Haircut 100, and A Flock of Seagulls. New wave finally died out in 1984, when established artists began to make professional videos and a new crop of guitar-oriented bands like the Smiths and R.E.M. emerged to capture the attention of college-radio and underground rock fans. Nevertheless, new wave proved more influential than many of its critics would have suspected, as the mid-'90s were dominated by bands — from Blur to Weezer — that were raised on the music.

I just listened to "Shuttered Rooms" all the way through for the first time in years.  WOW! WHAT A GREAT RECORD!!  I think it's their best in all respects.  The Fixx was my first "angst" band (concurrent with early Psychedelic Furs), but I have a much better ear for music than I did when I was fifteen.  "Shuttered Room" isn't just good New Wave, it's good rock, too.  I discovered the total righteousness of songs "Cameras In Paris," and "The Fool," two I used to skip over when I was a kid.

Nice to read all your lists.  Kind of fun to talk to all these people who liked the same music I did.  At the time it was my own private Idaho, if you will, in a suburban redneck wasteland.

My latest projects for vinyl-to-cd transfer, Thompson Twins, Men Without Hats, and The Fixx (though I don't need "Reach The Beach," I found that CD in a $2.00 bin a while back!) 8)

Hehehehe...I'm a HUGE Smiths fan myself! (Don't let the avatar fool you. I also like Depeche Mode.) But The Smiths aren't New Wave!! I never thought they were, anyway. Great band -- not New Wave. Depeche Mode were though. :D

By the way, I'm thrilled to see another Smiths fan in Canada!!! YAY! ;D

Absolutely Vile

...And I doused another venture with a gesture that was...Absolutely Vile...

THE SMITHS did their best to distinguish themselves from New Wave.  The made it clear to the press that there were no gimmicks, no synths, no videos, just great, heartfelt music.  Of course, the business told The Smiths they wouldn't be able to break into the US market WITHOUT a video, so they paid some art students eight grand to make the "How Soon Is Now" clip.  Soon they broke down and made a whole bunch of full budget videos!
Fortunately, THE SMITHS were so great nobody thought about what they weren't, but loved them for who they were.
It's hard to say who my favorite band of the '80s was, but in the '80s, The Smiths were the most important one to me.
