Subject: the first CELL PHONES

Written By: NASCARnut on 11/02/03 at 08:22 a.m.

???Does anyone here remember the first CELLPHONES,and how big and clunky they were? Unless you had a battery pack, you had to plug them into your car's lighter! And the phones themselves were EXPENSIVE,as well as the AIRTIME!! And there were many places that did not have cellphone service until the '90's! Today's cellphones are pretty cool, you can even transmit pictures and play games on some of them! And they definitely are better looking and way SMALLER! ;)

yeah, i remember those phones. i would peruse through radioshack catalogues and think how cool it would be to have one.

did you see that one episode of x-files in where mulder first met the lone gunmen? i think the setting was 1989. he pulled out his characteristic cell phone, the thing was massive!

I remember when cell phones were big ugly things, it wasn't that long ago if I can remember it.  It's scary how technology keeps changing all the time.

No kidding.  Those big and ugly brick sized cell phones from the 80's were still around here and there up till the mid 1990's.

I remember I knew someone that used one of those things, and this had to be around 1994 and '95.  Cell phones had gotten considerably smaller and much much cheaper by then, but some people were still holding onto their old ones.  I'm still sorta stuck in the past though, in many ways I still think of cell phones as being gadgets for the rich.  Even though I've had 3 different ones in the past 5 years, and I'm certainly not rich.

LOL! I had my big analog phone up until a couple years ago. It got to the point where people saw and laughed and asked "Is THAT a cell phone?" LOL! So I finally traded it in for a modern phone.

Also some early Walkmen were ugly and overpriced!I had one made by Soundesign in 1982,and I paid $70 for it because it was a combination AM/FM Radio and cassette player. It was the cheapest DECENT one I could find. They ate up battery power like crazy,so I used it sparingly and relied on a small 'mono'AM/FM/Cassette recorder-player which I used to tape stuff like "METALSHOP"("The only show with teeth!"where I first heard Metallica!) New Jersey Transit buses at the time had a 'no walkmen'rule that was not strictly enforced, but certain passengers felt it was their civic duty to hassle other riders because they were 'breaking the law'and 'annoying others'by playing a WALKMAN!! Now I have a CD Walkman which is surprisingly good with alkaline batteries and the sound is AWESOME!! 8)

The first time I remember seeing a cell phone was in the 90s. The first time I saw a cordless phone was in the late 80s. The first cordless phone I remember seeing I thought it was an amazing invention because the lady was taking on a phone without a cord.

I forgot how clunky the early phones looked until I saw a rerun of "Miami Vice" a few months ago.  :D  Boy-o-boy has technology marched on.  But, now I think they're too small.

I still remember back in the 80's, those fake cellphones that made ringing noises when you pushed the buttons.  I remember because I can't forget how this 16 yr old punk driving daddy's Mustang 5.0  :P  pulled into my gas station one day and tried to impress the cute 15 yr old blondes in the back seat (..or maybe it was me he was trying to impress me :o) by whipping out his toy phone.  When I went to get his change for his $5 in gas, I brought out the same toy phone we kept in the store and mentioned his phone looked just like mine.  ;D Boy was he embarrassed.  He left without saying a thing. Hahaha...

My kid was being a very good girl today and decided to do some cleaning and she uncovered an old analog cell phone.  It is so huge and ugly....I think I will hang on to it.  Hey, it could be worth something in the future.  I like the size of my phone right now and won't go any smaller, even though they are getting ridiculously smaller each year.

Actually the phone does still work.  It isn't the cellphone's from the 80's but rather the early 90's that my brother passed on to me years ago.  I would be too embarrassed to pull out a cellphone like that.  LOL!!!

The first real cell phone prototype was created in '77.  I saw a picture of it in the newspaper last year because it was its 25th anniversary and it was huge.  Later in the mid 80's I think the phone costed $800-$1000 (that's 80's money too!), plus you still had to pay to use it and it was pretty much only usable in large cities.

I don't know, but during the 80's, I would just have found the nearest pay phone.  Today, this leads to the question, "How much longer will pay phones be around?"

Actually, when my cell battery is dead or it's acting up on me again (I know time for me to get a new phone), I'm guilty of using the pay phone.

I only remember the black flip cells from the mid-90's, prominently displayed in the movie "Clueless". When I saw those big ones, I was like,"Damn, what the hell is the point of a cell phone if it's the the size of a brick?"

Cell phones weren't really huge in my area until about 1998. Most everyone had beepers...it was the coolest thing in elementary school to have a beeper. I didn't get a cell phone until I hit the the 9th grade in 2001...it was this old Cingular model from around 1999, which is pretty clunky by today's standards. I got a new T-Mobile phone this year...it's real cute and small and fits much better in my pockets than my old one did.

I won't get a cell phone and I am in the telcommunication biz.  I don't like the idea of having to sign a contract.  That's like signing a contract with Chevron agreeing to only buy gas from them or signing a contract with Raunchy Ronnie's agreeing to only buy their Big Mac hamburgers.  >:(

No thanks, i'll pass.  And I base it on principal.  Besides, I don't have a real desire to stay in contact with anyone.  I have my ham radios to do that, and they're guaranteed to work during a disaster, where-as cell phones have not.  :P

Yeah, the telecommunication industry is trying to gear for a single phone number assigned to an individual.  No changing your number... it follows you where ever you go in the world.  That's their dream, anyways.

LOL, this topic reminds me of this guy that I used to work with around about 1989 or so.  This guy was a janitor and was mentally challenged; he had started to see people driving around and talking on cell phones mounted to the consoles of their cars, and said that he was going to get one even though they were very expensive at the time.  One day not long after that, he took a group of my co-workers and me out to his station wagon to show off his new toy.  LOL, he had mounted an old rotary dial corded phone to his dashboard!  As much as we tried, we could not contain our laughter.
