Subject: 80s video games... did these rule or what?

Written By: Atari on 11/03/03 at 11:35 a.m.

Current video games are pretty neat in a technological aspect, but early 80s video games simply RULED! Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Asteroids, Defender, Robotron, Tempest (my favorite), Tron, Phoenix, Warlords, Centipede, Kick, Monaco GP, the list goes on... The gameplay of these games was top-notch, and the business wasn't as big then as it is today, making each game special.

Does anyone else have great memories of hanging at the arcades and playing these games, and did they affect you in a profound way as they did me (I worked in the coinop amusements business for a while and owned an arcade, and now own various machines)?

VERY cool! You've got a few rarities there.

I mostly collect Atari b/w games now. The older, the better :)

I wonder if you and I have chatted/done business in the past. I've sold a lot of games/parts on r.g.v.a.c./r.g.p. and eBay. I've also done some MAME coding. and used to maintain the MAME and Retrocade history databases.

I like that Asteroids caberet. Too bad I don't have the fund to buy it :(

Take care!

you can see by my username that i whole heartedly agree with you. i must have spent thousands on coin-ops (thank god parents don't ask for you to pay them back).

favourite coin-ops: defender, galaga/galaxian, tron, tankzone, qix, tempest and dozens more with many names i forgotten

even the consoles were awesome. lamentably, my colecovision has died a few years back (my atari 2600 still goes on strong! those things must have been meant to survive nuclear holocaust. even the cartridges are built to last)

Brian,
That is possible.  I have been collecting arcade machines for about 3 years now, and handhels and consoles for about 6 years.

Your Atari games are very cool.  Sometimes I think it would be a lot of fun to get an old Atari Fire Truck.  My dad used to play that game with my brother back in the day, and they would both get a kick out that.

What part of the country do you live in?

Almost forgot.  I went to a party at a fellow collectors house and had the opportunity to play some four player Warlords onhis cocktail machine.  That is a great game.  I would pick one of those up in a heartbeat.

I live in Michigan. This Saturday, I'm going to a raid in Kalamazoo. From what I'm told, there are a ton of b/w games there, including a Fire Truck :)

I have more machines than are listed on the website. One of these days I'll take pics of them all and get them up there. I've been way too busy to be involved with games lately.

Warlords is awesome in the cocktail format. Expect to pay a pretty penny for one, though :)

My favorite video games were Gyruss, Moon Patrol, City Connection (or Cruisin, as it was called in some cities).

I think making games three-dimensional made them more real; that killed the subrealism (if you can call it that) behind Pac-Man, Frogger, Stargate. Can you imagine those games in 3-d?

:PMy video game addictions in the '80's were Centipede,Galaga,Bosconian,Space Invaders,Food Fight,Root Beer Tapper(there was also a beer version sponsored by Budweiser I think),and Zaxxon.Centipede was cool because I got to bump off a fake centipede(real centipedes are gross!)It was REALLY cool to get 900 points for bumping off the nasty spider without it bumping off your shooter! :oAnd Food Fight was really FUNNY!I heard somewhere that a woman was involved with creating Centipede,is that true?  ::)I now have a Game Boy Advance with Madden Football 2003 and WWE Road To Wrestlemania! :-*

I just sold a couple, so I am down to 17 video games and one pinball machine.  I should be purchasing a couple more games in the very near future.  Hopefully one of them will be a Food Fight.

Yes, a woman was involved in creating Centipede.

I love the old games!  Sure, I'm biased, but I think I'm pretty objective cuz I'm an "oldie" freak anyway.  There are things from "b4 me" I like better than 80s stuff!

I still have my Atari but something isn't working - it won't do anything but fuzz.  I have to fix it.

Generally, I liked the arcade stuff better, too.

Today's stuff may be "good to look at", but like the movies these days, it's alot of style over substance, if you will.  Much ado about nothing; sound and fury, signifying nothing.  The games are all basically the same goals (a whole lot of just beat or shoot up some1 senseless in style!).  Also tends to waste alot of time doing realistic timing - to no purpose except to look good.  Hence a nephew's aggravated cry at the Madden Football yakking and stats sidelines "just get to the freakin' game!"

The "simple" games (if only in graphics) offered more variety, generally, and got to the point w/o wasting time on stupid, superfluous claptrap.

Nothing beats playing an old Atari game with a joystick.I think I just might play one later on my computer. :D

Yeah those were the good ol' days.I just wanted to mention PaperBoy,Scramble,Popeye,Dragons Lair,Space Ace,Road Blasters,Cobra Command and 720.The games back then had different plots unlike the games of today which is either a fighting, driving, or a shoot em up zombie game.

Stargate!  Now there's a favourite I had forgotten about.  I also liked Missile Command, Frogger, and Battlezone.  I had to play these in the arcade because my parents thought video games were evil -- anyone remember the big debates back then?

Once in a while I drag out my old "Pong" machine.  I used to get some interesting reactions from customers who saw me playing it during the night shift at work.  Lots of misty eyes... from the guys over 30 years old reminicing of their youth, and from the under 25's from laughing so hard!   :D
