Subject: History of Banana Republic

Written By: audrebecca on 11/06/03 at 07:55 a.m.

I know that Banana Republic started up in '78 as a very unique travel & safari store, and then sometime in the 80s (around '88, I believe) changed their modus operandi and became more mainsteam, an upscale Gap/Old Navy/etc.  I've been buying some of their older stuff off e-bay, and lately came across a tag I didn't recognize, white w/globe of the world on it.  Is anyone familiar w/the tag, and when it dates to.  As far as I had known, they had gone from the maroon oval with stars to plain white tag w/just the words Banana Republic.  Thanks!

I loved Banana Republic back in the 80's....they were such a unique, cool store, and their catalogs were great.

Then, I believe, they got bought out by Gap, and now are just a very expensive, upscale Gap-type mall store.  Bummer.
