Subject: Anyone tilt there chair back in class

Written By: BlooBerryMuffin76 on 11/10/03 at 05:13 p.m.

This seemed to be an 80s trend (at least where I grew up)---at the school I went to, the kids would lean back so much in their chairs that the front legs would lift up off the floor and basically the chairs would only rest on the back two legs, or vice versa with the latter being less common. The teachers would always warn us that we were going to get hurt, and a few kids actually did. When I was in the sixth grade, I heard that a girl from the other class leaned forward so much that she lost her balance and ended up spliting her head while in art class(sorry if I'm grossing any of you out). I put this post in the 80s section because when I was in highschool in the 90s, I didn't see too much chair tilting.

Yep...

And that's why to this day I really love working in an Aeron chair :)

Once in 7th grade ('95-'96) I was leaning back on a lab stool and tipped over.  Luckily, there was a wall behind me so I didn't totally fall over and hurt myself.  But it was pretty embarrassing.

Everyone at my school used to do this, until a girl in my English class fell backwards & pierced the base of her skull on a radiator mechanism. Nowadays, I have an adjustable office chair which allows the same degree of tilt, with less chance of injury...

I wouldn't say this was a totally 80's thing.  I can remember doing it at primary school which I left in '81.  Maybe the reason you didn't see much in the 90's was because everyone at your school was that bit older and had just grown out of doing it?

In the early 90's I had a Cub in my Pack who broke his arm falling off a chair after tilting it too far backwards.  He came on camp with his arm in a cast and twice in the weekend fell off his chair doing the exact same thing  ::)  Least he didn't break his other arm I suppose

i remember doing this. we had compititions on who could balance the longest. i upped the ante by just throwing myself back and cracking my head off the floor. we do this for awhile until reasoning finally kicked in. leaning back in chairs meant falling, therefore it equals pain. man, we we dumb...

Who didn't tilt their chair back in class.

I did but I made sure that I was not going to fall back.

I admit it, I fell one time and bruised my butt.

I have to laugh at this topic, cos this is something I did all the time.  In primary school, about year 3, our class was split up into groups and given points for good behaviour and we lost points for bad behaviour.  Our team never got very far, cos I was always losing points for them by rocking on my chair! :(

Then came good old high school.  I was still guilty of this, and can remember many grade 9 geography lessons being taught with the teacher standing beside me - so she could have her foot on my chair to stop me!!  I have to say though, I only ever fell off my chair once.  Not bad for 12 yrs of schooling.

The sad state of our education system was such that we students would risk bodily integrity to break the boredom.

I already stated my piece about this topic on the Ex-Lax post.

Another thing we used to do is yank the chair out from under a classmate just as he was was sitting down.  You had to do it at the precise moment he let gravity take over the maneuvre.  When it worked it was a hoot! The poor sucker went crashing down with a look of dismay.
;D
If caught, you the teacher would give you the same lecture you got for tilting your chair, the one about how "everyone laughed, but when the kid couldn't stand up, it wasn't funny anymore, and now that kid is a paraplegic."

Yea, I used to do that, but it got very annoying when someone sitting in front tilts his/hers chair against your table. I had that problem when one of my classmates just kept doing it while I was writing something, I got sick of that and pulled my table a little further away just as he was about to do it again :D. Loads of laughs for the entire class ;D and a very satisfying moment for myselt, I have to say!

I didn't, but knew someone that did a lot.  One day he finally fell off, hehe.

Yeah I used to rock my chair back and forth and one time I did fall in the 4th grade. I was guess it was 89-90. The teacher was teaching lessons about safety and he's like well(to the class) you can add chair safety to your list. I learned never to rock my chair back and forth again because I didn't want to fall off my chair ever again.

Your group must have been mad at you for making them lose points. Funny about the geography class btw!  :D
