Subject: Looking for more music of a certain "feel"...

Written By: oingo_fan on 11/23/03 at 09:09 p.m.

This is a vague request, I'm admitting this up front.  I'm trying to find new (to me) 1980's-era music with a certain "feel".  What I mean specifically is slow tempo, melancholic, atmospheric music.  Kind of the "lights down low, music on, zone out" type.  Songs that I would group into this are:

Yello-Desire
Moev-Open Mind
The Church-Under the Milkyway
Petshop Boys-Love Comes Quickly
Roxy Music-Avalon
Xymox-Obsession
The Cure-Prayers for Rain
Shreikback-This Big Hush
Peter Gabriel-Mercy Street

What would you add to the list?

I think I'm kind of "feeling" where you are coming from - not sure.  Here are few suggestions that I would add.  Try these out.  They could be way off, but it's worth a shot...

Slave To Love - Bryan Ferry
Round, Round - Belouis Some
Positively Lost Me - Rave-Ups
Forever Young - Alphaville
Why Me? - Planet P
Welcome To The Boomtown - David & David

"A Forest" and "Pictures Of You" by The Cure, maybe? And what about some Bauhaus?

(And I'm going to throw in "A Question Of Lust" by Depeche Mode for good measure.) :P

Hmm! I'll give it a shot as well Oingo fan (not sure if it's gonna help though).

'Joe Le Taxi' - Vanessa Paradis
'Nightshift' - Commodores
'I'll find my way home' - Vangelis
'Shout' - Tears for fears

I don't know about any of the other music everyone else has listed here but I do recognize "Boomtown".  As a suggested song that I think is of the same genre try: Don Henley "Sunset Grill".

Other ideas I've thought of, though I don't know if they'd qualify:

How about some songs by Jon & Vangelis, John Foxx, or Kraftwerk? Good stuff indeed. :D

There's more to life than The Smiths you know, but not much more...

Just picked up the Bladerunner soundtrack by Vangelis, VERY cool stuff.  This proves I'm slow-I should have figured that a dark and dreary '80's movie would have, you guessed it, dark and dreary '80's music!!!   BTW I'm looking into all of the other suggestions that you great people have mentioned.  Gotta love those listening stations at the book store with samples of every CD known on them.  Thanks again! ;D

If you're lucky to find it, pick up Jon & Vangelis' album The Friends Of Mr. Cairo or at the very least, have a listen to the title track (all 10+ minutes of it)! You'll love it!!! :D

Oh! And while I've thought of it, how about The Normal? Check out "Warm Leatherette" and "TVOD." :)
