Subject: Remake Nightmare--talk talk It's my Life

Written By: annieox03 on 11/30/03 at 10:02 p.m.

:o Has anyone heard the new remake of It's my Life by Talk Talk, its Mandy Moore and my husband turned up the radio so I could hear it. It was soooooooo bad that I can't get that sad and twisted version out of my head.

Some people can pull off a remake and make it work, but rarely.

I have to keep playing the original so I can keep my sanity.

Just my opinion.

It's actually No Doubt that sings it, not Mandy Moore.  I don't think it's too bad as far as remakes go.  I would rather hear Talk Talk do it any day, but I don't think the new version is so bad.

Speaking of remakes, I think I will start a new topic...

Actually, as remakes go, this one is pretty good.  I love No Doubt (Gwen Stefani totally rocks), and they did a decent job.  Of course, there's nothing like the original.  Talk Talk just had a certain sound to their songs that nobody can duplicate.

Mandy Moore!  No way would she do something this cool!

Talk Talk was a great and underrated band.  They're lumped in with all the '80s synth pop bands (most of which I like, mind you), but the albums they really wanted to make came out later, "The Colour of Spring," "The Spirit of Eden," and "Laughing Stock."  Prog rock fans go nuts for these records.  I still prefer the early synth-poppy ones, though "The Colour of Spring" has some of my favorites.

Lee Harris and Paul Webb went on to 'O' Rang, a progressive jam band.  "Herd of Instinct" (Hit It Records 1994) was a cool record, and they have a couple of others.  Mark Hollis put out a solo record circa 1997, but it was BORRRRING!

"It's My Life" is a SUBLIME song, and I don't begrudge No Doubt for covering it.  I mean, I don't like their version, but that's a different kettle of fish.

I just heard that remake yesterday.  And, boy does it stink!  :P

I think most of these artists were too young to remember the Coca-Cola debacle of the mid-80's: Don't mess with the original!  :)

8)What's wrong with the remaking of a song you like. I enjoyed it very much, of course i'm a big No Doubt   fan so maybe i'm biased.

Unfortunately, Mandy Moore actually put a album that's filled with wretched covers from great artisrs like Blondie, XTC, and Elton John.  :P

The No Doubt cover of "It's My Life" is OK, but I prefer the original.

Interesting point. I can't speak for anybody else but I think the reason why I have a purist attitude (though I don't mind the cover of 'It's my life') is that I have memories associated with the original songs and when someone makes a cover, I find it insulting.

It's the 'I know where I was/what I was doing when that song was played' thing.

My ears bled to the new version. That's just my opinion though.

This is also my opinion:

Can't blame a band for trying to redo a hit when they have no ideas to come up with their own original, fresh material.

They can call it a tribute. I no longer buy that reasoning. :-/

The original version of this song rocks! 8)

I don't like No Doubt's version at all.  I think I'm kinda like Bobby in that I have memories attached to certain songs, and it just kills it for me when I hear a cover of it. Not that all covers are bad, but this one in particular should have been left alone.

I cannot believe that the completely untalented Mandy Moore would put out a cover album of these great artists songs.  Is nothing sacred?

Can't stand No Doubt's version of this song >:(.
Like some have already mentioned, the original has memories attached to it. Have had to play Talk, Talk's version just to erase the new cover from my head.
Other than that, I can't say I'm a fan of No Doubt (IMHO unoriginal and not very talented), that they made a cover of one of my favorite tunes of the 80's just makes me dislike of them that much more.

I like the remake but I had never heard the original. Once I heard the orginal,I liked it more than the remake.  :)
