Subject: Atari 2600 makes a come-back!

Written By: pell on 12/03/03 at 12:42 a.m.

Well, sort of...

Has anyone else seen this?

I was looking in the toy department yesterday and I came across a replica of an Atari 2600 joystick that you plug directly into your TV and play 10 original Atari games like Pong, Missile Command, Breakout, Centipede and some others. There's no cartridges, you just plug in the joystick.

Unfortunately, I think it's just one-player. The package didn't say anything about hooking two of the joysticks together. Still, I'm thinking about picking one up. For $20 at Wal-Mart, it might be worth a chance to play some of those games again on the old joystick.

(I hope this isn't old news here. I've been away a while and I haven't looked through the old posts.)

I saw something similar to that. Very cool. Not as cool as the real thing but close enough for a happy flashback. That would make a great present for Christmas especially for my bro bro's who played it when it first came out. I still remember playing
Defender and actually flipping the score. That took some time. I beat the game Defender and live to tell the tale! ;D
My older brother actually bought me the old hand held foot ball game made by, well I forgot the company who makes it but it made that beep sound every time you moved the red dot which represented the football player. How cheese! I know but I always wanted one and finally got one. Now that was a happy flashback.

Are you kidding?  Those joysticks were so stiff that after a few months of playing games, your hand and arm on one side was all muscular from the workout!   ;D

I'm glad you posted. I was thinking just the other day how it would be cool to play some of those games again.

Yeah, that's the one! It came as a "two-fer", the baseball and the football came in the same box. Awesome deal! However, the football game is still my favorite one to play. I think he spent maybe $10 for both or was it $20? Anyway, it wasn't much. He got it at Wal-Mart last year. Happy Hunting!

You're welcome.

Yes, it would be cool, so the next day I went back to get the Atari joystick thing and they were sold out. :(

I guess I'll just keep an eye on the toy section now. They DID have a Rubik's Cube and that electronic football game ... hmmm.

That's so cool! I think I might buy one if I ever see them in Wal-Mart--$20 is a pretty good deal!

Anyway, it seems like all the toys that were played with in the 80s are coming back: Atari, Cabbage Patch Kids, Care Bears, Etch a Sketch, Light Bright (wish I still had mine  :(), My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, and even Popples.

My brother had that or at least a knock-off version (my parents did that to us) of it.

I remember gripping the Atari joystick so tightly it was sticky with sweat, and feeling really pissed off that my little brother could beat me at Pac Man.  The home video game system did so much to bring families together.

I also had the hand-held versions of Galaxian, Space Invaders, and Pac Man.  The funny thing was the maze on the hand-held Pac Man was actually more complex than the arcade version.  The Space Invaders I had came out in 1980, and was REALLY primitive!

I picked up one of those Atari games back in August for my birthday.
Oh I had forgotten how bad the graphics were back then. but they have Pong, so I guess it's okay. I could never beat anyone at it as a kid, but now I can beat the computer every time.
Don't forget to buy 4 "AA" batteries when you pick one up. all you need is the two RF ports in the back of the TV (one sound channel, one video) and the batteries and you can again play for hours... or until you beat every game again.
The games are as follows:
-Pong (there's a glitch where if you find the right spot and never move the controller, every fourth bounce you'll knock it past the computer's paddle, you can beat it and never play... it takes 15 minutes and 46 seconds like this)
-Yar's Revenge (can only beat four levels)
-Adventure ( can't make it past level 2)
-Asteroids (i can play for days on this... it never ends)
-Real Sports Volleyball (the most unreal sports game ever.... still I can't win a single match for the sheer fact that I can't tell where I am in proportional to the dot of a ball)
-Gravitar (can't beat a single round)
-Centipede (hours of repitition, redundancy and repitition)
-Breakout
-Circus Atari (probably the most bizarre game ever created)
-Missile Command

I really suck at Atari.... always have.

I think the most depressing part of it all is that on the box it says: "A blast from Mom & Dad's past!"

Mom & Dad's? I feel aged by that statement

oh and no, you can't hook joysticks up, it's only one player

                 The Odyssey System
We had a late '70s Atari-type system called "Odyssey."  It was just ahead of Pong on the evolutionary chain.  Very limited capacity and crude graphics.  You had your Cowboy game (bang bang bang), and the ski game where you tried not to hit any trees, the race car game where you tried not to get hit by other cars, and the space fighter game where you tried to blow up all the enemy ships before they blew you up....oh, and a hangman game where one player entered a word and the other player had a certain number of guesses.  However, there was no "hangman" graphic.  You just guessed.

My brother and I got pretty bored with "Odyssey" and took to doing stuff like yanking out the skier cartridge mid-game, inserting the cowboy cartridge, and trying to get the cowboys to shoot the skiers.  :D  We waited for xmas for the 'rents to spring for Atari, which they did!

Just so you know, Radio Shack has both the "Atari 10-in-1" TV game, AND the Mattel Football game.  I saw them there last night.

The Atari was $25, and the Football was $15.  Talk about old memories!!!!!

I just remembered the Atari radio jingle from 1983:

"Well you know deep down that it's gonna be a hummer,
'coz nobody's hotter than Atari this summer!"  :-*

I don't know about you, but I think the My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake toys look nothing like the ones in the 1980s. They gave them a 2000's make-over. I swear I can hear my cousins cursing the toy companies. :-X

If these companies are going to cash-in on this whole "retro" thing, they should reproduce the original creations in their original glory.

I'm sure those toys were plenty cute the way they were. If the toy companies only understood the nostalgic value of these toys to the previous generation, they could generate so much more money from adult expenditure and still keep the interest of the little ones. As it all is now, they've alienated all nostalgia buffs. Fools. ::)

P.S. For whatever it's worth, I think the older version of Strawberry Shortcake is cuter. 8)

Atari was and always will be awesome, no matter what advances are continuously made in the gaming industry.

I still have mine and many of the game cartridges as well.

I also still have my Odyssey! :)

Speaking of toys not looking the same, have you seen the new He-Man/Masters of the Universe figures?
He-Man is such a total wuss now, and for whatever reason they made BattleCat cybernetic or some such... poor BattleCat.

I wish I still had my Atari 2600 or 7800, but I finally picked up the 10-in-1 Atari thing. I forgot how much fun it was to play those games. I have an N64 that I never hook up, but I will keep the Atari thing handy for a quick game of Missile Command.

What's nice about Atari games is that you can just pick it up and start playing without spending a week to figure out which combinations of presses on your 30-button paddle are needed to play the game. :)

My only complaints about this device is that it is only one player, and if you forget to turn it off, it's back to the store for more batteries.

There's a new game set out on PC, it's only about $20, but it has 80 atari games... whole lot of hard to find ones on there, but no one ever has Pick-Axe Pete... too bad it's only a PC setup and doesn't come with an Atari-like controller.

I also hear tell of another controller-game-combo like the Atari except it's like 30 old school NES games.
