All help appreciated.  :)

Thanks for these, Stingr22. I love 'Somebody's watching me' by Rockwell, 'Give it up' by KC and the Sunshine band and 'Let the music play' by Shannon. It's similar to the kind of thing I had in mind - I'll check your other songs out too.

Another group that comes to mind is Debarge - especially hits like 'Rhythm of the night' and 'Who's Johnny?' That kind of electric drum beat and stuff. Cyndi Lauper has the same kind of synthesized sound.

Thanks for everybody's help. I hope I've jogged more memories.  :)

Tainted love is a great song, mrgazpacho and Whip it by Devo has an early 80s style that is quite good - but a bit repetitive.

Anybody know any US songs that Britain has no idea about? One example I can give is Eddie Money's 'Take me home tonight'. I found it by accident and I think it's a cracking song!

Bobby, glad to help!  Thanks for the suggestion.  I'm going to have to make me a CD of that kind of stuff.  Brings back alot of memories!

As far as some songs that may have been big in the U.S., but not in the U.K., here are a few that I would guess probably never caught on the other side of the pond.  These would be the same sound and feel of "Take Me Home Tonight."

When You Close Your Eyes - Night Ranger
Goodbye - Night Ranger
Ain't Even Done With The Night - John Mellencamp
Cherry Bomb - John Mellencamp
I'm Alright - Kenny Loggins
Footloose - Kenny Loggins
After The Fall - Journey
Stone In Love - Journey
She's Tight - Cheap Trick
Can't Stop Fallin' Into Love - Cheap Trick
Two Sides Of Love - Sammy Hagar
Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy - Sammy Hagar
One In A Million - The Romantics
Talking In Your Sleep - The Romantics
The Boys Of Summer - Don Henley
Dirty Laundry - Don Henley
The Big Crash - Eddie Money
I Wanna Go Back - Eddie Money

Actually most songs by these guys would probably fit the bill!

The only "Tenderness" I know of from the '80s was by General Public, but that's ska derivative.

Whatever became of Eddie Money anyway?  Forgot he was something of a star in the late '70s--early '80s.  Couldn't have helped he didn't have much of a face for MTV.

I think Shannon, "Let the Music Play" was one of the best dance tracks of the '80s.

In the '80s it seems like most dance, soul, and R&B tracks were using similar kinds of synth tracks.  It was an instant hit-maker.  How else could a song as dumb as Rick James' "Party
All the Time" (sung by Eddie Murphy) hit number one?

"We Built This City" by Starship!  ;D
"Neutron Dance" by the Pointer Sisters
"Spanish Eddie" by Laura Branigan

Thought of a couple more...

Don't Want To Fall In Love - Jane Child
What Have You Done For Me Lately? - Janet Jackson
Nasty Boys - Janet Jackson
Oh Sheila - Ready For The World
Crush On You - The Jets
My Pergoative - Bobby Brown
Lovergirl - Teena Marie
Jungle Love - The Time
Don't Hang Up - Vanity 6
The Glamorous Life - Sheila E.
When Doves Cry - Prince

Don't know if these were suggested or not, but Sugar Walls by Sheena Easton and Girlfriend by Pebbles.

You know I think we all could keep going and going.  ;)

I hope so because this is wonderful, You all have given me lots of songs that virtually pin-point what I'm looking for and would never have heard of otherwise (Spanish Eddie is brilliant).

The Jets 'Crush on you' is the kind of thing I'm looking at as well - Thank you all  :D.

All the others are ok, but oooh, why would you suggest that ANYONE listen to Menudo?  ;)

Well Menudo sort of had a synth/Jets type feel to the music. But Hold Me is the only one I can remember being really huge in the US.  :)
