Subject: Christmas No 1's (UK version)

Written By: Criz on 12/10/03 at 10:37 a.m.

As I said on the previous US thread, having the Christmas number 1 in the UK is such a major thing. I'm going to start with 1979, seen as it was pretty much the 80s anyway :) ( plus you can't leave out a classic song!)

1979 - Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall
1980 - St Winifreds School Choir - There's No-One Quite Like Grandma
1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me
1982 - Renee and Renata - Save Your Love
1983 - Flying Pickets - Only You
1984 - Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas
1985 - Shakin' Stevens - Merry Xmas Everyone
1986 - Jackie Wilson - Reet Petit (re-issue) OR Housemartins - Caravan of Love
1987 - Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind
1988 - Cliff Richard - Mistletoe & Wine
1989 - Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas

...tell you what - here's the next ones too..

1990 - Cliff Richard - Saviours Day
1991 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (re-issue)
1992 - Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
1993 - Mr Blobby - Mr Blobby
1994 - East 17 - Stay Another Day
1995 - Michael Jackson - Earth Song
1996 - Spice Girls - 2 Become 1
1997 - Spice Girls - Too Much
1998 - Spice Girls - Goodbye
1999 - Westlife - I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun (double a-side)
2000 - Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It?
2001 - Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman - Somethin' Stupid
2002 - Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground
2003 -?? The Darkness? Pop Idols? Avid Merrion?

Hi Criz!!! :D You mean, "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid, right? Aside from a few dodgy ones, this list is much better than the American one. The 80's one anyway. It gets progressively worse after that. :D

Absolutely Vile

Some right ol' chestnuts here, and no mistake...

1979 - Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall
Repression in the education system, always a favourite topic at Christmas! Fine song, even better album...4

1980 - St Winifred's School Choir - There's No-One Quite Like Grandma
From the sublime to the ridiculous! The angelic voices doing the old bat proud with a song which goes off-the-scale twee...to be avoided, if you've not heard it...1

1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me
Better! Defining 80's moment by the 'League', which kept Bucks Fizz's twee 'Land Of Make Believe' out of the frame...4

1982 - Renee & Renato - Save Your Love
God! Why?! Awful, sickly dog of a song done by fat bloke in a cod-opera style, and woman who sounded half-bored...obligatory one hit wonders (sort-of), which is probably not a bad thing...avoid this one too, folks...1

1983 - Flying Pickets - Only You
The previous year's Yazoo number done in a capella (no instruments!) style...bizarrely caught the nation's mood for no apparent reason - the novelty soon wore off after 5 minutes...2

1984 - Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas
Red-hot favourite was 'Last Christmas' (Wham) before this came up right at the last minute...the best of British pop which now sounds dated in a way...Ethiopia's still famine-ravaged, so where did the cash go...?4

1985 - Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone
'Last Christmas' and Band Aid were still selling heavily on re-issue, but in the end it went to the ageing Welsh rocker with a song so horribly sugary, it could quite easily put you off Christmas for life! Thankfully, he disappeared soon after...1

1986 - Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite
Had it gone to plan, The Housemartins' 'Caravan Of Love' (another a capella reading) would've done it...but for no apparent reason (again!) this re-issue of a storming RnB number from 1957 took the honours...not Wilson's best, but better than what could've been...4

1987 - Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind
Almost a three-way pile up this year...Rick Astley's gentle cover of 'When I Fall In Love' peaked too early, and the excellent 'Fairytale Of New York' (Pogues) left it too late...so the synth duo came out on top with this turgid re-tread of an already turgid song...2

1988 - Cliff Richard - Mistletoe & Wine
Sugary-sweet offering from Sir Cliffie, which was (if I remember) plugged to death on a TV show he did just before Christmas of this year...okay, if you like this sort of thing...2

1989 - Band Aid II - Do They Know Its Christmas
In the grand tradition of most sequels, this was somewhat pointless...the worst of British pop convened this time around (Bros, anyone?) and everyone was left scratching their heads...it was either this or sodding Jive Bunny (saints preserve us...!)

That's about as far as I dare go...thanks Criz...
