According to Billboard, these were the Top 5 songs of the 1980's.....

1. Physical - Olivia Newton-John
2. Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes
3. Endless Love - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
4. Every Breath You Take - The Police
5. I Love Rock 'N Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts

It's interesting to note that 3.5 out of 5 of the songs were performed by women.  ;D

By the sole criteria of sentimental attachment, my personal favorite for the enire decade would have to be A Flock of Seagulls "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You).   :-*

IMO, there were too many sub periods in the 80s decade to come up with a single ballad for the whole era, so here are my thoughts:

early 80s - Amnesia - the Tubes Group
early to mid 80s - Blockhead - Devo
Mid - Johnny - Fine Young Cannibals
Mid - Talk about the Passion - REM
Late - Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Late - Here I go again - Whitesnake

you have to choose..... Rubixgirl and Manhatten. Imagine you are stuck on an island with a Walkman (Not a Discman or iPod!!!) . And you only have one song to play.

From my local alternative radio station's Top 91 countdowns:
A great list of #1 songs of eatch year voted by the listeners of that time.

1983: UB40 "Red, Red, Wine"
1984: General Public "Tenderness"
1985: Simple Minds "Don't You (Forget About Me)"
1986: Oingo Boingo "Dead Man's Party"
1987: The Cure "Just Like Heavan"
1988: Souixsie & The Banshees "Peek A Boo"
1989: B 52's "Love Shack"
Of the entire 1980's: The Smiths "How Soon Is Now"

Personally, it's very difficult to choose...

Well, out of this mix (as if I made a mix tape), I would add:
1980: Devo "Whip It"
1981: Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime"
1982: The Go Go's "Vacation"
1983: Modern English "I Melt With You"
1984:  Billy Idol "Rebel Yell"
1985: Power Station "Some Like It Hot"
1986: Bangles "Manic Monday"
1987: Depeche Mode "Never Let Me Down Again"
1988: INXS "Devil Inside"
1989: The Cult "Fire Woman"
Power Ballad: Motley Crue "Home Sweet Home"
Hair band track: Bon Jovi "Livin' On A Prayer"
'80's Hip Hop track: Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock "It Takes Two"
Guilty Pleasure track: Toni Basil "Mickey"

I would say "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go" - Soft Cell

If anyone remembers, this is the original single version of the song.  Sounds just as fresh today as it did all those years ago!   :)

No one should have to.....

I'll give it a try though.....
:-/ :-/ :-/

I can't pick one so here it goes...

-Rio- Duran Duran (of course)
-The Chauffer-DD
-Come up and See me(Make me Smile)-DD this is really a great cover of a song if anyone hasn't heard it.
-I want you now- Depeche Mode
-Question of lust-Depeche Mode
-Obsession-animotion
-Don't you want me- Human League

okay, now I can put my Ant songs on here, I paid homage to some of my other favorites....

-just about every Adam & the Ants song he recorded + his solo work
-Antmusic
-Prince Charming
-STAND AND DELIVER!!!!!!!
-and pretty much all of Adam's early stuff like Plastic Surgery and Cartrouble, ok, I know thats late 70s but he did play a couple of those songs in his concerts so I think it counts.

Whew...I told you just one song couldn't be done, and that was just the tip of the iceberg for me!!!Not even, it was like a shaving of ice!! Well, until I can list some more music like Madonna and even Prince, ciao!

Rio

Erm, it's not, the original version of "Tainted love" was done early 6ts by Gloria Jones (Marc Bolan's ex girlfriend & the driver of the car when Bolan went to meet his maker)...The record is an old Northern Soul classic!!

"Tainted Love" was written by Ed Cobb of the '50s/60s vocal group The Four Preps.  Though it was a minor hit for Gloria Jones, the Soft Cell version is the definitive one.  It was Soft Cell's only hit here in the states, number 8 on the Billboard charts. It stayed on the US charts for 18 months, and is one of the most enduring songs of 1981/82.  Subsequent covers such as by Coil and Marylin Manson were informed by Soft Cell's take on "Tainted Love."

As corny (and probably extremely biased) as this sounds, my nomination for #1 song of the 80's would be...

People Are People - Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode themselves have much better songs, but it's one of those songs that you recognise as soon as it starts.

I could say the same about The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now." Instantly recognisable, even though they have better songs.

Both of these songs are 80's standards, and there are loads of non-standard songs that should be nominated as well. But I suppose to be "#1 of the 80's" a song should be recognisable and popular enough to the masses. My runners up:

Too Shy - KajaGooGoo and I Ran - A Flock Of Seagulls

Absolutely Vile

Everyone Wants to Rule The World by Tears for Fears

The perfect 80s song for me. Of course, followed by,

Dont You Forget About Me by The Simple Minds

So many great songs to choose from..... :-/

You can tell there are no Germans here, because David Hasselhof is sorely under-represented...the "Looking for Freedom" album and single were tops of their charts for three months in 1989 (even longer than Tainted Love spent on the US charts).  The fact that it's utterly awful though seems to be ignored by the German people.

as much as I love Duran Duran, I think based on US Hot 100 chart performance, Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" wins hands down. It spent the most time in the upper echelons of the charts compared to any other single of the 80s, and everyone knows it when they hear those opening notes. I've never heard a better cover tune, and all the subsequent versions pale in comparision. There may be songs in the 80s that sold more copies of singles in the long run, but this one is still the best.

I was referring to the Soft Cell cover, not the original original, which Maxwell Smart is indeed right, it was written by Ed Cobb for The Four Preps. ;)

What I was referring to is whenever that song is played today, it's only "Tainted Love."  Most people don't remember that when Soft Cell released it, "Where Did Our Love Go" was part of their original 45.

This is a tough, tough question. I know so many album tracks that I prefer over singles, but if I *really* must choose.... it'll be 'This Charming Man' by The Smiths.

That's right! 1983! :D :D

1983's Labour of Love, an album of reggae cover songs, gave the group its first chart album in America and first number one U.K. hit with Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine." Several albums of original material sold well in the U.K., but only respectably in the U.S., where the group's biggest hit was a Top 30 cover of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" featuring the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde.

In 1988, the group performed "Red Red Wine" at a Nelson Mandela tribute concert, and a Phoenix radio station trotted the single out for a second go-round. Listener response was far more enthusiastic, and "Red Red Wine" re-entered the charts and went all the way to the top. Finally having hit on a way to conquer the lucrative American market, UB40 responded with another covers album, Labour of Love II, which produced Top Ten singles with versions of the Temptations' "The Way You Do the Things You Do" and Al Green's "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)." The group scored a huge hit in America with Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love," which was initially featured in the Sharon Stone film Sliver and spent seven weeks at number one.
