Subject: What is heavy metal?

Written By: woops on 01/06/04 at 05:17 p.m.

Some people don't consider Motley Crue, Poison and Bon Jovi as "metal".
And some, like my teachers (from 1995) say Bon Jovi is metal.
Plus, there's Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest, etc. that's more intense and better than the bands mentioned...
Even worse...the headbanger kids made fun of me for liking Poison and Bon Jovi and my local religious group told me that I shouldn't listen to that stuff. (Remember, this was Pre Marilyn Manson/Eminem)
The same with rap. (What's the difference between rap & hip hop?)

To this day I'm still  confused.  :P

Thankfully, most of my friends have a diverse taste of music.

I get confused with categorising music, Woops and we had a big discussion about it on a thread previously (check the archives).

What I get from the R&B/Hip Hop thing is that R&B is Hip Hop gone luvvy-duvvy. This is coming from the guy that thinks Grandmaster Flash was the true man of hip-hop though.

Rock and Metal has varying degrees - Soft, Hard, Heavy and Death. I would class Bon Jovi as soft Rock. Skid Row I would class as Hard. Iron Maiden I would class as heavy and Cradle of Filth as Death . . . Probably.

well, taking an 80s perpective, and not todays classifications, i'd say metal encompassed a wide variety of styles but had the one component that held them together. it was loud. at least that was what i came to know it. i made fun of poison and bon jovi towards their fans, thinking them to be pale imitators to hard core groups like AC/DC or iron maiden. but i was also put down for my tastes by guys who liked venom, slayer and megadeath.

despite the wide varieties, they all were loud, crass, boorish and hated by all older people. be it glam/hair metal, classic metal like sabbath or zeppelin, 80s metal like judas priest or iron maiden, or that scary-a*s death metal like venom, that i never liked.

now i read that guns and roses was never metal! now i hang my head in shame, thinking i was a headbanger, reflecting now on how cool i thought i was blasting "appetite" out of my dad's dodge diplomat.

Great topic Woops!  It reminded me of an article I read in Rolling Stone in 1987 (I remember because I was laying on the beach reading it - I don't live near the ocean, I was on vacation, that's how I remember it - see cover below).  This was probably the heyday of metal and all that was related to it.  What the article did was basically describe and categorize the metal bands of the day.  I remember it saying that there were a lot of variations to "heavy metal."

There were the "hair" metal bands, such as White Lion, Firehouse, Winger, Poison, Warrant, etc.

Then there was "light" metal (seems like they called it aluminum foil), like Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Def Leppard, Dokken, Motley Crue, etc.

Finally there was the harder stuff, I can't remember what they called it.  That was more like Slaughter, Metallica, AC DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio, etc.

So I don't think you can pinpoint "heavy metal" very narrowly.  It is pretty much guitar driven rock that is harder and faster than the mainstream stuff.  Some is just a little harder than others...

Subject: Metal Rules!

Heavy Metal = Armored Saint, Metallica (1984-1989), Loudness, Accept, Dio, Ozzy, Megadeth, Judas Priest (this stuff kicks a*s)

Progressive Metal = Iron Maiden, Fates Warning, King Diamond, Queensryche (the most musically advanced of all metal. Many of these musicians are very educated in music)

Mainstream Metal = Scorpions, Dokken, Great White, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, (some good songs, but this kind of metal was best for scoring with chicks)

Glam Metal = Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison, Cinderella (this is the crap that gave metal a stupid image. Not really metal at all, more like rock n' roll with hairspray)

Death Metal = Venom, Celtic Frost, Moterhead (loud, incoherant crap)

Thrash Metal = Slayer, Exodus, Death Angel (some good songs and some loud, incoherant crap)

Gimmick/Joke Metal = Twisted Sister, Grim Reaper, WASP (looks and image more important than the music)

I agree with this assessment! ;D I love a lot of this stuff too, with the exception of "Death" and "Thrash" Metal.

P.S. Queensryche Rules! 8)

Motorhead is not a death metal band.

Thanks.

Guess that I'm a fan of mainstream, glam, and "joke" or cheese metal.

Apologies if this is so well known as to be redundant but
the term "heavy metal" was taken from the 1969 hit "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.

...I like smoke and lightning, heavy metal thunder

a good rock song but hardly one that fits any category of "metal" today.

Nope! ;D

I originally thought that as well. Then I was informed by my know-it-all (and much more "hip") younger brother that the term actually came from a William S. Burroughs book, and it was the name of a drug.  It was in the book "Naked Lunch", and the people who used it turned chrome.

I think that is where Steely Dan got its name from too.  The Steely Dan was a steam powered sex toy.

The "heavy metal" in that song referred to Harley Davidsons. 'Heavy metal' was first used as a descriptive term for a musical style by New York music critic (and later Blue Oyster Cult manager) Sandy Pearlman when he wrote that the music of Jimi Hendrix was like "heavy metal falling from the sky".
