Subject: A Quote from The Young Ones

Written By: n-Somnia on 01/10/04 at 08:20 a.m.

I was just watching an episode of The Young Ones (it was the Bambi episode), and came across a nickname for someone the characters knew - "Old Yellow Pages".  And I was wondering (because it was never clearly explained in the show), what does the term mean?  All that was ever said about why they called this character (which we never get to see) was, "Well, when she gets drunk at parties..."  And that was it.  ???

Can anybody shed any light on this?

I suggest that the term "Old Yellow Pages" would refer to the Yellow Pages phone book, common at least in Britain and Australia, for being the book where you would look up if you wanted to find a shop or supplier....

To me, using the description for Bambi meant that she was so well-known for her 'looseness' (hence the reference to her getting drunk at parties.....), she may as well have had her number listed in the yellow pages as a supplier of her, umm, "services"  ;)

I'll just clarify this further - because I actually asked Ben Elton (the writer of the show) what the term meant many years ago.

It wasnt to do with being listed in the Yellow Pages - it was because with the Yellow Pages you "Let your fingers do the walking".

So her being rather "loose" when drunk - basically meant her fingers did all the work.

Ive met Ben maybe 9 or 10 times over the years since the first time in 86.
He lives 6 months of the year in my city and my brother use to work for his sister in law.

First time was after his live gig with Rik Mayall - my friend and I ended up sitting in a bar with them all night and it was the biggest laugh of my life.  The two together are riotous.

Then I met him in the UK when the shop I worked at was hosting an autograph signing for his release of Stark in 88.  I had to help him set up and he remembered me from the Perth pub.

Since then I have gone back to his dressing room after his stand up gigs for a quick hello quite a few times.  The most recent meeting was in August when I met him at the premier after party for his hot musical We Will Rock You.

He is a fab guy.  But I have seen him be pretty sharp to people he is not interested in talking to or who are annoying him.  He has always been so sweet to me.  He has the knack of always remembering names too.  I introduced him to a friend once and then she wasnt with me at the next few meetings - but then she came with me again like 4 years later and he remembered her name straight away.
